Epic Flail - Free alpha (Browser)

Body Slicing 2D Gladiator Brawler

Depends for me - I'm part of the problem though. If a game doesn't grab me by the short hairs with the way it looks (based on screenshots on Greenlight) I won't upvote it. It's a tough call - but I don't have unlimited time to give each and every game a fair shake, I suck.

Nah, I understand. I mean obviously it looks terrible that's an instant indicator that you probably won't want to play it, but at the same time I would miss out on games like Minimetro if I only cared about graphics.

Main thing is though, if I don't see any gameplay, it won't get an upvote from me. Doesn't matter how good the trailer is otherwise.

PandaPedinte's suggestions for doujin games on Steam are pretty good, but I would also throw in:

Bunny Must Die (a metroidvania that was made before it was cool to make them -- the game is plenty nuts)
Fairy Bloom Freesia (2D brawler with a very freeform combo system)
Fortune Summoners (action RPG with some hard-ass combat)

Played some more Echo of the Wilds, and god damn is it hard. I finally managed to create some stone tools, and shortly dived afterwards because I relied too much on my tools and didnt have resources backed up to make new tools once my old ones broke, which left me with no food or firewood. Not to mention all of those areas that I cant access because I didnt have ropes/equipment/clothing yet or the countless other statues and mysteries that still remained unsolved.

Goddamnit.

I've been meaning to look into that at some point; I recall some of my online buds being into the original doujin release. All I know is that this is a game where you have to unlock the ability to walk right, which just about says it all, really.

Pretty sure Woofle (Freedom Planet's musician) worked on the Steam rerelease, too, although I haven't checked out her work on it.

I'm all for having a bundle in the honor of Alan Turing, but
Indie Royale said:
Thanks to Alan Turing, who was a bit of an enigma, we have computers and able to play these games
... what? At least have a link to Wikipedia or something.

It's sad to see many members on GAF have no idea about the doujin scene, I don't blame them because mostly of the games are present only in the Comikets and it's hard to find info about these games in English but diminish entirely the scene saying they only produce erogé VN or mobile games (and it's not a bad thing because the mobile market is huge in Japan) is lame, I know there is bad and questionable stuff but put everything in the same bag doesn't do any favor to the good games.

/end rant

yup, it's really hard to find any real info about doujin games in english language.

last year i wrote (in italian) a long article in three parts about the indie scene in japan

Thanks I'll read it later when I'm on my laptop.

If you have some time left until saturday, I highly recommend checking out the free Echoes of the Wild demo.

*sounds like a broken record*

Could you point me to the demo's link? I tried to find it yesterday but no success.

We were talking about doujin games yesterday and Nyu Media put more games on Greenlight.

Ah, right. I forgot to mention that for some reason he didnt include it on the website. I had to google for it. Echo of the Wilds demo:

Thanks Toma.

Still talking about demos, I also had to search for the Level 22, Gary's Misadventures because it isn't listed on Desura and neither on Steam.

Updated list!

1. Endless Legend - Sheer quality; beautiful music, great art and an interesting twist on the Civ style gameplay. A little expensive as it stands though - but Amplitude have a great track record.
2. CrossCode - This has so much potential - twin stick action with an ARPG twist with an art style and soundtrack with JRPG influences? Why not
3. Beneath The City - This is a neat little game. Cool art but super interesting mechanics that I'd love to see expanded on.
4. The Last Night - The strongest atmosphere of anything I've played this month. Not much game.
5. The Sun and Moon - Frustratingly hard at times and not as good as Javel-ein. Plus it hurt my wrist.
6. The Fourth Wall - Pretty cool idea with nice art and a nice, cyclical "story " to it.
7. 0rbitalis - I couldn't get on with this at all. The devs were kind enough to send me a copy so maybe the full version clicks with me a bit more. I'll be trying it tomorrow.
8. Ronin - A poor knock off of Gunpoint. Very disappointing.

Among the Sleep - Free Demo/$19.99 (PC, Mac Linux)
ss_0ce54e9b6b31c88d64c7126e7fb03575c65a6d9b.1920x1080.jpg

LINK
Among the Sleep is a first person horror adventure, in which you play a two year old child. After waking up in the middle of the night to mysterious sounds, you start exploring the dark looking for comfort.

The game explores horror through atmosphere and exploration, not with scores and combat systems. In Among the Sleep you’re vulnerable, scared, and trying to make sense of the world.

Where is My Heart - $7.99 (PC, Mac)

In Where is my Heart? you play the story of a family of forest spirits. The family lives comfortably in a tree in the woods until one day they lose their home and thus embark on a great adventure. Their journey will take them through the mushroom caves and even deeper down to the lifeless crystal pools and back up into the mountains

Adjusted my voting list, with Echo of the Wilds at #3. Absolutely love the art style and beautiful, unsettling, sometimes surreal atmosphere. It's an interesting blend of story, survival, and exploration, more narrative focused than other similar games I've played. Like Toma mentioned, the survival elements are deeper and more challenging than they initially seem.

Putting together the June retrospective. What perfect timing for some games: Among The Sleep is released, Malebolgia was Greenlit, Trash TV is like 95% complete, etc. Always cool to go back and see that.

Oh, and soon it'll be halfway through 2014 and the Indie Threads are still going strong!

Just wanted to throw a recommendation out here for Dusk Golem's Let's Make an RPG Maker Game! thread since we have had some aspiring devs in here. Make an RPG maker game before July 31st, submit for funsies and review all sorts of GAF-er made mini RPGs. Pick up RPG Maker VX Ace while it is on sale in the Humble Weekly for a buck and get crackin!

I was considering that, but I know how much time I used for my first RPG Maker project back in the days, so not sure I can do something I'd want to put out in 9 weeks :p

No clue how people can do something so quickly that is somewhat fun.

Yeah, especially in RPG Maker. I love the engine, but boy does it take time to get a fun game out of it. Contrast that with like Gamemaker or something where you can throw together a shooter or platformer in a day. RPGMaker constricts you to, well, RPGs. Which are tough to find fun in. And you have to worry about an exceptional amount of art and mapping which eats up a lot of time.

Finished playing through A Story About My Uncle just now, and agree on almost all points, positive and negative.

Overall, the freedom of the jump, grapple, and rocket mechanics allow for a lot of fun, even in difficult times. I played with a Dualshock 4 (I don't play a lot of PC stuff so its far more familiar to me than keyboard and mouse) and had a rough time in the final sections too. I must have tried one section 100 times - granted it was 3 in the morning.

Yeah I was using a 360 pad and it was so rough - I was getting so frustrated it actually undermined a little of what went before :(

I am not often complaining about "graphics", but it is fascinating to me how utterly unappealing the current IGS deal looks to me:

The UI, textures, design...

Freaking Meatbags - $9.99 (PC)
Freaking_meatbags_Construction.jpg

http://www.wildfactor.net/go/freaking-meatbags

Land on a planet, pick up some rocks, leave before the solar system explodes. Oh, and don't die in the nightly robot attacks! Freaking Meatbags is a humorous real-time strategy game that's all about building a base, mixing meatbag DNA, then convincing those dolts to help you gather resources.

No More Probes - ????
Stuff_Preview_16.gif

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=40023.0

The Earth is attacked by Evil Robot Invaders From Space and it seems that the main protagonist who is a homeless drunk, engineer genius and a little crazy is the last hope for mankind.
With the help of a small alien artefact and his engineer knowledge he (the player ) gather and build defence gadgets from junk to repel the invaders.
The game is separated into day and night cycles. When night comes your vision becomes limited and the robots become more aggressive which makes the gathering of resources more dangerous.

Social Justice Warriors - $1 (PC, Mac, LInux)
637x358.resizedimage

http://nonadecimal.com/site/

Social Justice Warriors is a satirical role-playing game that transforms you into a crusader for online morality, a champion of internet justice, and the lone defender standing valiantly against the encroaching morass of willful human ignorance.
Created in response to the list of “social justice warrior” videogame journalists to avoid, Social Justice Warriors translates the standard medieval fantasy heroes of role-playing games into social media crusaders facing an endless horde of ignorant, bigoted internet trolls.

Telos - PC, Mac, Linux

Spidermechs, zero gravity, grapplehooks, and more -- bringing in the renaissance for competitive FPS on PC/Mac/Linux.

The Book of Dwarf - ????
9295984_orig.png

http://www.bookofdwarf.com/

The Book of Dwarf is a management sim with a more personal feel. Interact closely with your dwarves and watch them as they go about their daily lives. With complex AI systems leading to emergent and unpredictably fun behaviour no two games of The Book of Dwarves will be the same! Think the base building elements of Dungeon Keeper, the voyeuristic intimacy of The Sims and a little of the complexity of Dwarf Fortress

Crisential - PC, Mac, Linux

Crisential is a single player / co-op RPG, with sand-box capabilities and Real-Time Strategy influence in a desolate post-apocalyptic world.

Floor is Jelly any good? Just noticed that Disasterpeace did the music which is a good way of getting my attention.

Yep, good game, but gets maybe a tad too challenging later on for a platformer I was expecting to be rather mellow and relaxing. If its on sale, I'd definitely recommend grabbing it for the style/traversal/puzzles.
