Hey GAF, let's make an RPG Maker Game Competition!

Hey, that is generous of you. How about some 'Stormy Night' type music - I've found that all the music it comes with is generally quite 'gamey' and light - could do with a decent atmospheric tune for walking around at night in a storm! I imagine that might be quite useful for a few other people too.

Can do, would you want music with thunderstorm noises, or absent of such, and want it to be more ominous, dark, atmospheric, ambient? Maybe just post some examples of the sort of things you're thinking about, but with some broad variety. I could whip something up but it might come out very different than you may anticipate as I've been mainly practicing on a lot of horror music recently.

Awesome idea! Was thinking of doing something for the RPG Maker Web contest that's being run but could do something for this too.

I'd love to make a game in RPG Maker.

Do you guys think I should do a Kickstarter to send me to RPG Camp to learn this? Or are the tutorials linked in the OP good enough?

Sounds fun. I'll give it a shot. My submission will probably be terrible.

Tis' fine, part of this is practice for some, fun for others, and just for the hell of it. Some like motivators to do something. I'll definitely play it and every entry when they're completed.

Pfftt, know you're joking but seriously, RPG Maker Camp is a scam. You can learn more than you'll learn from camp at the links I provided you, and from other people here on this forum.

I may give this a try. Don't know how much time I'll have though. >.>

We'll see how it goes cause I've wanted to use this program since I bought it and doing it with others may be a good start.

The last time i build something with the RPG Maker, was with the 2000-Version and i actually would like a challenge like that. But it would vote for some actual rules, limitations and a theme, so that all the games have a common ground and are more easily to compare. Especially since, i guess, nobody here has time to play a bunch of ten hours RPGs. So rules like 2-3 hours of game length to a theme like "Limitless", would actually help to make some polished, artistic and comparable titles (and also stops people to start too big projects, which will never be ready in time).

Not a bad idea, I don't want to do a theme as I am curious what people on their own may come up with even if it makes for all different tastes and the like, but I should mention something about scope and length.

Might be cool if I can find the time for it.

Been using RPG Maker VX for about 4 years, so it'd be nice to make something silly for it.

You could offer up some possible themes to help people with ideas, but not have them be required.

Maturity, bitches.
Going to buy the bundle when I get back home (just in time). Been discussing the idea of making a game with some other GAFers so this could be used as practise.

Consider me interested. I've had a few ideas percolating for a while now.

I haven't used RPG Maker since the early 2000's though. Back then it was pretty much limited to creating DQ-style JRPG's with random battles. Is that still the case, or can the modern version create different styles of game without much fuss? Like, if I wanted my game to be "more Zelda and less Final Fantasy," could I do that without manually modifying the engine through code? My programming knowledge is... limited, and that's being generous. 😏

Nice idea. RPG Maker 2000 was great to play with back in the day.

One thing that bothers me is that I've checked both XP and VX Ace trailers, and I don't see the side battle system that was implemented with RPG Maker 2003, only the front view system.

Was it removed from this new versions or you can choose which system to use?

I'm talking about this (I know this can be achieved with scripting, but I'd be surprised if they didn't continue with this option in the next editions of the software):

Yeah, 2-3 hours should definitely be the upper limit if we want many people to play these. "About an hour" should probably be the recommended sweet spot.

New versions have a new main battle system (different between VX Ace and XP even), so unfortunately not, at least, without some scripting. There are scripts for it of course, though.

And added two rules, added a heavy suggestion that your game should not be over 2-3 hours long to let people play the variety of games on show here, and added a rule that when submitting a game, you must define what sort of game it is (like RPG, horror, puzzle-based, adventure, exploration, visual novel, etc.).

People work better with limitations, since it gives them a starting point and borders to work in. Having a theme not only helps people to get over the first phase of having a basic idea, it also will surprise you and others even more. Everybody has a different interpretation of a theme and going in with your own, the opinion of other can complete change your understanding of it. It is really crazy, which idea people will have even with a strict theme. Believe me, it will help more and doesn't damage peoples creativity.

That's why most competitions and jams have a theme to work around. I even found this Random Game Jam Theme Generator ;)

This is true and I habe taken part in some game development contests, but really I want people to make what they want to make. However, I will add a few theme suggestions to help those who need inspirational starts.

+1

I've already thought up a few different ideas for a potential submission, I'd hate to have to shoehorn in an externally-mandated theme just cause.

If this thread gets a lot of participation, maybe it could become a more regular thing on NeoGAF? Quarterly, perhaps. Maybe for future contests there could be different theme limitations and such.

I might give this a shot, though I don't have any experience doing any aspect of it, hahah.

I can also help others out with writing/proofreading type stuff if they like, I'm pretty good at that at least. Hit me up.

I'm down to clown. The timing on this was perfect as I had been discussing making a short adventure/horror game with a close friend of mine.

The next day? The humble bundle sale. Hahaha. Subscribed for later. Lovely idea.

Fiddled my first few hours with VX Ace. Without much knowledge of it or previous entries in the series.
Hmm, well it's as expected, or even better. You can do wonders with what is provided but... making your own game ? That would demand some major graphical work. It's not that what is provided isn't nice, but I have trouble imagining a game made only with other people assets, and I'm no graphist.

Banging my head on the NPC dialog system now. The little bugger keep repeating his first dialog and the second dialog is too lengthy (a simple sentence) and glitch.
Keep in mind that I didn't read any tutorial past the really really vague ones.

I'd like to be a part of this but I am not sure if I can have my game done by the deadline. Should I just go ahead and join in and bow out if I can't complete my game in time?

We'd be happy to donate some Steam codes for our games as prizes. Not RPGMaker games, but they are RPGs so probably relevant to most people entering the contest. :)

Of course that'd be appreciated, they're different engines but similar style games definitely. Though on my end I'm just adding several favorite games.

I'd imagine timing will be big for most. Though I won't be accepting any of the prizes, I'll be competing to see how I do with my own horror game, so should be fun to see how the horror games compare.

What sort of game are you thinking about? I can try to hunt for some resources that might help if you don't mind using online resources. They don't penalize you at all, just you have to mention that you used ____ resource by blank when submitting and in the game.

Definitely can, and these games are still all yours, if you don't finish it for the contest but want to finish it on your own time, then you definitely can, or make improvements after the contest. However, no improvements to builds submitted for the contest after the July 31st 11:59 PM PST deadline.

Robert at Zeboyd Games has confirmed that everyone who submits a game for the contest, regardless of placement, will receive a Steam copy of Cthulhu Saves the World+Breath of Death VII.

Very generous of him.

I downloaded the $6 tier, but I don't know how to set the resources in the dlc, I redeemed the codes already but only the main software got installed

do I have to download the dlc from the direct links and then put it in the RPGMaker resources folder?

also great idea, since yesterday I have been reading some Ruby documentation, wanna try some stuff, good luck to everyone making a game

Nice idea. I'll have to try and create a submission. Just gotta avoid delving too deep into the scripting engine; I know some Ruby, but I don't want to make things harder for myself. ;)

Ah what the hell.

This sounds really fun, Dusk Golem.

I have a really good idea for a short 2-3 hour game, so I'll fire up my ol' game-making skills and probably submit something.

My post was more a collection of general thoughts after first using the software. I haven't already chosen the game I want to make, and as the procrastination is strong in me, I prefer to expect nothing out of this.
But I was impressed by the ease to make a general map, then a "city", then the interior of a house, and the cool 'teleporter' function is absurdly easy to use. Then I had to find my way around the NPC creation (why on earth when you generate an NPC you have to export it first is beyond me).
And now comes the dialog part. Here I fear I will have to read some tutorial because we are heading dangerously close to the scripting part of the whole thing.

I'm in.

I can finally make that Wrestling RPG I always wanted...

June's Backlog Blitz will be split between RPG Maker and Watchdogs.

Used to use RPG Maker a lot when I was younger. Would be good to focus o a project, so I'm in. Now if only inspiration would strike...

To set a resource, there are two ways. First is manual. Make the game project folder (which should be in your Documents folder), and then go to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RPGVXAce\dlc folder, and place the DLC manually (copying preferred) into the directories of your project.

However, RPG Maker updated recently, apparently there's a feature to import DLC automatically now within the game, but I haven't quite figured it out yet.

Nice idea. I'll have to try and create a submission. Just gotta avoid delving too deep into the scripting engine; I know some Ruby, but I don't want to make things harder for myself. ;)

Sensible, Ruby does add a lot but of course requires knowledge of the engine. However, there are a lot of pre-made scripts you can use, which you can view under the Resources in the OP (a master list exists for VX Ace of scripts).

Ah what the hell.

I wish it worked on a Mac :(

Unfortunately without using Wine or something of the sort it's not possible normally. D:

I can give some tips on how to change font in the game, if you want. It involves a few simple tricks with hardly any coding.

Yeah, I'm definitely in. Just gotta think of a good idea.

The narrowing process is always the first step.

Sounds exciting!

I will try and come up with some idea, but even if I don't, I will be paying attention to what comes of it.

Hopefully it doesn't get lost during e3pocalypse.
