Mario Kart 8 Sells More Than 1.2 Million Units Worldwide Over First Weekend

If WiiU outsells PS4 for the next NPD, you're are going to have some butt-hurt people around here. Even If it's only one month. lol

But what other upcoming games are going to post similar results (which are great but amazing when you look at them objectively).

You have Smash in 5/6 months but what about in between? It's too early to call anything tbh.

E3 is just 8 days away for Nintendo.

After that if there's still a big void between now and Smash, then yeah it'll be hard for Nintendo to keep any of this momentum up.

While I agree with this, I find the idea to "project" MK8 sales and show them alongside other MK LTD sales defeats the purpose of the comparison. Probably an opening week comparison chart would've been better

That was a fucking stupid graph indeed.
However, MK8 now needs to sell another 4.5M to not be the lowest selling MK ever. Assuming the 20% AR is correct and stays as is, that's another 20M+ WiiU sales to go. It's gonna be a tough one.

In like one/two days of tracking for the month? I doubt it'd happen. If the game launched at the beginning of the month, then we could have that conversation.

This is by far the best game released in 2014. Hands down better online and offline compared to Titanfall, Infamous SS etc.

Please Nintendo. Keep this game alive. This game deserves some DLC love.

like I'm not even understanding how some of you are saying this is bad. In 3 days it reached 1.2 million. That's amazing without even regarding the fact its on the Wii U

You are right that is not actually a bad number. The problem is the monmetum for the console. as pretty well could be numbers coming from the WiiU/Nintendo enthusiasts

The franchise has strong legs but the question is that if are strong enough to carry the console.

Hyrule Warriors is highly likely for August September. Bayonneta's also pretty much confirmed for sometime soon since It's already been rated in Australia. X is pretty much the missing link.

My store has sold zero. But that's because Bergsala, the ever-so-competent Scandinavian distributor, has not yet even sent out the game. They somehow didn't manage to put my shipment on the car when it should be sent, continued to not send anything all last week, and now they will "try to send it early this week"... Of course, we lost most of the sales from customers' pre-orders. Oh, the fun of selling Nintendo-things in Scandinavia. I've no idea how Bergsala still has the distribution of Nintendo, they've been horrible to deal with for years.

It's also their franchise with the best online play.

True. Been playing it the entire weekend and not a single lag issue so far and only 1 communication error message but that was just a matter of exit and join the lobby again and it was resolved. Sometimes I can't believe I'm playing online because of how smooth everything is. You join, choose the track, 15 seconds so that everyone chooses their track. BAM! You start to play. Finish the race and in 5 seconds you're back on the lobby to choose the next track and so on. Nice and efficient as hell.

Was that Polygon chart implying that MK8 would do 1.26m lifetime?
Not exactly. They were saying that the game would be bought by 20% of Wii U owners. So 1.26M at the current number of Wii U, but they also said that it would reach 1.9M if Nintendo meets its hardware expectations before march 2015.

They'll obviously be over the 20% figure (if Super Mario 3D Land can go over 35% attach rate, I have no doubt that Mario Kart won't suddently stop selling today because we've reach 20% in three days)

More or less.

Mario Kart will have a higher AR, similar to New SMBU (70%~)

I admit I want about 16 more tracks, plus battle arenas. I would pay.

Yeah I was thinking about that. I know it's very, very unlikely but it'd still be hilarious.

Nice results! That's quite a crazy amount of units for a console with such a little userbase.

It seems we shouldn't take MK out of the chalkboard yet. Hope this game can live up to MKWii popularity wise and drive WiiU sales ahead of what most people expect for it. Those bundles has probably done wonders.

Can't wait to see Media Create this Wednesday and the NPD sales thread in a few days.

Hope it has really good legs.

Neat.

I have to think Smash Bros. has the same potential as Mario Kart but the only problem is I don't know if Nintendo has anything else first party that could create the same buzz after these two games. Maybe a console Pokemon RPG, even though that's the one thing Gamefreak doesn't want to make.

They've pretty much blown their must-have multiplayer load after MK and Smash, unless like you say, they knock out a console Pokémon. The purported Pokémon fighter might do well, if it's truly stunning.

I could see them trying to put together some sort of hot MP game with an established brand at some point though, in the hope of recreating what Goldeneye did for them.

I hear people talk about how this means very little because Wii U owners are starving for something to play. However I've seen no survey that details how many consumers own only a Wii U and no other gaming device. I own a PS4 and Wii U and I'm not starving for something to play, yet I purchased MK8. This game is fantastic! Im finding it difficult to even play Watch Dogs at the moment. MK8 keeps calling me. Game is addictive.

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
As I said in previous debates with GAFers, Mario Kart is a whole different beast than all previous games released on the console. Probably the best 4P local multiplayer game on the market right now, with the most solid online effort ever from Nintendo. I believe it will enjoy a far higher attach rate within 2 weeks, and progressively start selling consoles when Mario Kart Wii owners and other demanding gamers get a chance to put their eyes/hands on it.

Don't forget Nintendo can announce new games that'll release this year too.

I'm really expecting(well hoping) that the second half of this year is packed.

Well I own all 3 systems and mario kart 8 firmly holds the console up to the ps4 and xbox 1, right now mario kart 8 is my number one next gen game :)

Who would have thought that little game would leave my xbox one and ps4 gathering dust!

Wow, what a hit. Take a bow, Nintendo, then fix that shitty battle mode with a real one via free DLC, please.

Try to keep the momentum up with some decent games over the Summer.

Not really a surprise. Its selling to a starved audience that basically has bought Wii Us to play Nintendo games.

You know, comments like this come off as really petty to me. Can't we be glad when any game finds success, in spite of how we may or may not feel about the developer and/or the hardware it's on?

Great results! I think this pretty much confirms there will be paid DLC somewhere in the future for this game. If done right (such as battle mode arenas, new characters and new tracks), it could be amazing to extend MK8's life!

Upside, inside out he's livin la vida loca, He'll push and pull you down, livin la vida loca
Considering how the Wii U is doing in general, this is mighty impressive.

Probably right, still though Brawl sold 8 million units. I think Smash 4 will help the Wii U sales, but Mario Kart 8 will be the best selling out of the two franchises. To say Brawl will not help the Wii U I think is silly.
Brawl actually sold 12.14 million units

AGAIN!! Someone needed to point this again...

Some people should think about that: the game release date is at the end of the month.

They damn well should join the modern era. More profit. More for everyone!

Maybe this will be the first WiiU title to hold it's retail value for more than a few months. Seems like most Nintendo titles end up heavily reduced which would be unheard of in the Wii/DS era.
