Yeah, a beta client update released a couple of days ago added the ability to choose a pre-load location. No more fiddling with symbolic links/junction points.

It's too bad my 120GB SSD is filled thanks to BF3/BF4 and Titanfall

dem origin games

honestly it's the ones where the loading goes faster by far, joining and server and loading a map takes seconds so im much more inclined to just randomly play for a bit

Speaking of top 10 best games...

Wrapped Half-Life 2 for the first time (+ Lost Coast for good measure).

Well... I didn't actively hate the experience, like with Black Mesa. The game isn't spiteful to the player, Ravenholm excluded. It's just that... it felt more like playing a Call of Duty, than playing an actual game. Loads of scripted events, loads of cutscenes (the fact that you can run around in the room doesn't change the fact that they are cutscenes), vehicle rides all around.

Not really something I'd expect from a 'gameplay uber alles' company like Valve.

Game still looks lovely maxed out, aside from low-res textures it definitely doesn't show its age (is it really 10 years old? gosh), runs like butter (*PROTIP* with extremely short load times and improved performance all around when installed to SSD), the shooting feels nice, what is there of it.

Can't say I feel I've wasted my time, although some trimming would be appreciated, 14 hours is a long time to spend playing a story driven FPS. Pity Valve didn't backport dev commentary, what was there in the Lost Coast was lovely.

I guess so, in the sense that Tetris is Tetris and all

im not even saying it in the sense that it's my favorite game, altho it could be, im just saying that game is god damn perfectly crafted. It's a perfect game.

I also really, really think it's gonna pass the test of time just fine. I played the original version for hundreds of hours for like 2/3 years before this one came out.

also, this just happened, and it's everything that's wrong with the world when you play confident

Yeah I think for people who love Spelunky (and the likes of Dwarf Fortress) today will still love them in years to come, if not forever.

Though you never know if something is going to come along and improve upon that experience. If you think about it you yourself have moved on from the original and now on to the super-sexed-up graphical version. What Tetris has going for in its favour is that it's a simple concept but executed to perfection. No matter your age, ability or understanding of gaming, everyone can at least play Tetris, if only to complete a level.

Though that does pose an interesting question. If you could only chose 1 game to either spread to a new culture (like you're a gaming missionary or something) or send to outer space for extra terrestrials to find what one would you pick? I'm sure some silly buggers would say The Last Of Us uurrgggghhhh!

How do I sign up for Steam Betas like that? I avoided them before.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Episode Two has a commentary node that mentions a fight in the game was intended for Episode Three but was later retrofitted into Two because everything was ready to go and Valve didn't want it go to waste. Makes you wonder what happened with the rest of Three. :p

Steam -> Settings -> Account -> Beta participation

Those are the only games where I feel the need to have them on my SSD. In other games it's usually the difference between 5 seconds or 2 seconds of loading and I could not care less. I remember having 60+ seconds with BF4 on my HDD, now it's more like 10 seconds.

Don't forget that DmC works 100% with GeDoSaTo, been playing at 4k/60fps and it's been amazing. Color removal mods and turbo mod will make it even better.

Has anybody played Astebreed? Looks really awesome.

It's like Zone of the Enders, there are a few Playfire rewards for it. Forgot to install and play it earlier but at the time I was focusing on Wolfenstein. Will put in a few hours into it today.

also one that is as similar to half life 2 as a dildo to an apple

Yea, obviously waiting for Alyx/Barney/Dog to breach the door is vastly different than waiting for Price/Bowman/whoever to breach the door.
Also driving a dunebuggy with a gun attached is vastly different to driving a jeep with a gun attached.

I dont know what to tell ya, gameplay is nothing alike

you're comparing "stuff that happens", saying "you drive a vehicle" is pretty damn generic

what do you do in that donebuggy? what do you do on the boat? you drive it through a big area, you get off from it on different areas (not marked by any sort of in-game arrow or anything), fight through enemies in whichever ways you like, using physics and your environment, you get back on the boat, go to another place, do other things, explore, open up other areas. It's at your own pace, and you got room.

how is that similar to a set-piece where you "drive" a jeep while on a turrent shooting at shit for like 15 minutes on a narrow road

I wouldn't call it a stretch, they're both critically acclaimed first person shooters who tackle single player similarly: extremely linearly and targeting bombast and spectacle over all else. Between paper thin Combine that largely stand still and bigger encounters that always conveniently place a crate with an infinite supply of rockets, the combat is not really the star of the show so much as a means of progress.

It's a game of its time, but man what a game it was at the time. 5 minute loading screens didn't even matter.

One to cross off the list. Personally, I'm still waiting for local chat logs.
Indeed.

The achievements are all super easy, though there is one that might be difficult to do. It took me a few tries as it requires clearing a mission without taking damage.

I really dont get people saying Half Life 2 is as linear as a Call of Duty game

is like everyone forgot how Ravenhold or City 17 works, or the area I was talking about just now

I mean sure it's set-piecey and "exciting" in a similar fashion, cheesy techno music kicking in and all, but jesus it's not even close to being the same thing

Is Spelunky a good game to play if I'm heartbroken?

I don't need to play anything with a story or the like right now, cause I can't focus.

But it is as linear. You're going from setpiece A to setpiece B in both games, HL2 is just better at masking this.
You literally cannot skip anything important in HL2, only choice you have is turning your head during cutscenes and not searching for secrets (which are usually not worth of your time - you're rarely pressed for ammo/health, Ravenholm excluded).

no? they're both linear. Neither is "open world", but that doesnt make them similar at all, and certainly not as "linear", if we're talking about linear being "walk from here to there"

in call of duty you barely have room to do something, there's no real open areas where you can tackle things in different order, for example

half life 2, being a different and also older game, has remnants of that type of FPS design that is quite a bit more open

plus, there's nothing rushing you, there's no marker on the screen. while there's still setpieces, the game doesnt go for that breakneck speed or "omg SHIT HAPPENING" that COD games go to. Half Life 2 even feels like a horror game at some points dude

I really, really dont' see the comparison beyond saying "it's a linear first person shooter"

Oh, so it's a first person shooter and its structure is linear in the sense that levels have a beginning and ending. What about every way in which the actual gameplay doesn't play out linearly? The part where the physics alone make any section in which you have the gravity gun play out a million times more emergent than just interacting with enemies by shooting them with bullets.

HL2 is almost 10 years old. I agree that it didn't age as well as some other games but it was pretty mindblowing at that time. Perspective is everything.

Also simply saying that a game is linear isn't a valid criticism at all.

You're for the most part shooting them with a different type of bullet in that sense, there is essentially a binary reaction from enemies when using the gravity gun; they either die on impact, or don't flinch. The only real exceptions I can think of are propane tanks setting them on fire, or saw blades chopping certain zombies in half both of which are predominantly done in Ravenholm.

Well, it requires a bit of focus to progress far...some may say it leaves you heartbroken.

But it can still be a fun casual game if you aren't worried about beating it right away.

Honestly, Sony have been amazing with sales lately. Dark Souls 2 on PSN sale before Steam. Ugh.

Sony plattforms will still be the ultimate Souls-plattform.

LMAO at people recommending Spelunky to someone who says they're having trouble focusing. It's all about the focus. Might as well recommend Trials Fusion. The Impossible levels are lots of fun when you can't focus too.

Apparently GameFly has slightly changed its discount coupon system. For the opening week the discount is 15% off with 20% off kicking in after that:

Sorry, coupon code JUN20OFF cannot be redeemed until 6/7/2014.
Coupon code JUN15OFF applied.

I noticed Enhanced Steam said JUN15OFF rather than the usual JUN20OFF, so I decided to run a quick test. My first thought was that the reduction to -15% was permanent, but fortunately that's not the case, it seems.

Why?
Not saying that I need my game to be a sandboxy type of thing, but there are loads of people who don't like linear gameplay. Why wouldn't calling a game on its linearity be considered a criticism?

Dark Souls 2 was out 6 weeks earlier on console.

You mean that sale that's more expensive than the GMG pre-order price?

And that.

Thanks JaseC. I just played a bit, and LoD is pretty cool. I'd need to try this in co-op.

Im talking abotu PSN vs. Steam. GMG ahs nothing to do with it. People can probably get Dark Souls for 10$ on GMG for that matter using credits. But it's not about GMG anyway.

I can expect a Steam sale in 6 weeks or less then?

It's up to Namco, but it's likely.

It's only $10 cheaper than the Steam version, which I picked up for only $12 thanks to CSGO crates. It has also been out longer on PS3. It also runs like shit on PS3.
