Media Create Sales: Week 22, 2014 (May 26 - Jun 01)

This makes me wonder if SquareEnix should just consider shifting their big RPGs to handhelds, since so much more people own them over consoles nowadays.

Not like JRPGs became much better on powerful machines.

some do, I'm not a big fan of them but Action JRPGs benefit from the powerful hardware.

Crappy bump for Wii U, and no other great Wii U games on the radar to keep up the momentum. It'll be down to 13-14k next week, then sub 10k again until Nintendo gets its shit together (they won't).

Abysmal numbers all around apart from Mario Kart, well done Nintendo EAD team. Without the (tiny) WiiU bump from MK, we have yet another down week for HW in general.

At least the iOS Top Grossing battle in Japan between P&D, Monster Strike and QuizRPG is exciting, unlike the console sales. It is like being on a continuous suicide watch.

Still happy for MK8, my favourite game of the year thus far.

Nice results for MK, above my expectations. The WiiU is a little below what I expected (25k vs 19k). As other people has said, the game may have a bump in the nearest holidays.

They've already shifted them to handhelds.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I'm guessing it was featured on the app store page and probably within the PSO2 client, downloaded by everyone who wanted it, and had no widespread appeal beyond that.

With mobile you usually need something that has a smaller file size (has to be downloadable over 3G/LTE ideally) and appeal to a notably general audience in order to keep your download rank high given we're talking pretty huge numbers to keep up in that list.

Quiz RPG just added another million in like two weeks and isn't in the top 200 most downloaded.

Wait, are those numbers just for Japan or WW? And just iOS? Quiz RPG, from what I'm seeing, is out elsewhere as well.

Since it was mentioned on the last page, Phantasy Star Online 2 eS (iOS/Android) hit 300k downloads.

IIRC the Vita version of PSO2 hit 350k sooner than that. But eS will eclipse it eventually.

They need to start putting apps on the PS4 already. I've been seeing more and more about Wii U's Joysound app lately, even one of the expats here was asking me about it.

(I told her we could just use my Vita TV)

At least torne is launching next week: http://www.jp.playstation.com/torne/ps4/

Wouldn't be the smartest move from a worldwide perspective. People can argue either way whether Final Fantasy has declined or not (personally I think it has, but a well received game may fix that). But by putting shifting it away from consoles, they'll effectively neuter the series in the West.

It's not always about system capabilities. You have to go where the audience is (or will be). Look at some of these cross gen games or early next gen exclusives. By toning down a few things here and there, there's no reason why the can't run effectively on PS3/360 level hardware, but companies still need to make the transition because the audience for their titles shift over

I don't know about that. I think consumers are trained to expect new sequels to come out eventually. Its been 3 years since MK7, 6 years since MKwii. People will see there's another Mario Kart and want that. Of course the price barrier might stop or delay that will negatively impact sales.

I think there's some confusion here. I'm not doubting that Mario Kart is a strong brand capable of good sales. What I'm questioning is whether -- after 7 previous entries -- does it really need good word of mouth to appeal to the market that it will ultimately sell to? Basically, I'm just stating that I can't see there being a plethroa of people out there going "Eh, I think I'll pass because my time with Mario Kart Wii was ultimately pretty 'meh'. Wait, this one's better you say? Comical Luigi death stare animations!? I'm in!"

Mmmh...this deserves some analysis later, then, with graphs. Thanks!

Disgusting Wii U numbers.

Not sure it'll hit 15 million by the end of it's life at this point. Was expecting a larger bump from fucking Mario kart.

I think he just means that there isnt really that many people who wont buy Mario Kart 8 because they arent convinced that its better than Mario Kart Wii. Generally speaking, people who liked Mario Kart Wii will probably like Mario Kart 8 as well, and that should be enough for most of them to simply be told that there is a new Mario Kart game out now. It probably doesnt hurt if the general feedback/word to mouth on Mario Kart 8 is better than Mario Kart Wii though.

EDIT: He already replied to it =)

Disastrous bump for the WiiU, was expecting at least 30k

disastrous sales for the Ps4 as well, seems like the Vita is keeping Sony afloat in Japan, something I would never have expected
You can't call a system's sales performance disastrous this soon, you have to wait until at least it's second Christmas.
Is what I hard about the WiiU all last year in sales threads, ironically. I don't actually think that, mind, call it however you see it.

lol wut?
19k only for the WiiU?
I thought it will go up to 80k..... -_-

To hell with you, japanese gamers!
You really expected a single game to cause the consoles sales to increase 9 times over?

Your expectations were slightly misplaced.

wii u did about as well as i expected (original prediction was 15k-18k, but i upped it to 20k a few hours ago). game did about 50% better than i expected (220k prediction). legs will be the real story here, and i won't be surprised if/when mk8 gets a bundle at the end of the year to coincide with smash bros.'s release.

there just really aren't a whole lot of people buying hardware in japan anymore though. man. trying to guess final sales for each platfrom: 3ds at 17.5-18m ; wii u at 2.5-3m ; psv 4-4.5m. ps4 is a real wild card because nothing's come out for it yet that would drive adoption. it probably won't track too far ahead of the vita or wii u though. 5m may be its upper limit. i admit that's based on a very small window of time to gauge an estimate.

for the rest of the world, 935,000 mario kart 8s were sold in that first weekend. i wonder what the split is. i'm guessing it will heavily favor the us. maybe somewhere around 480-500k? that would mean sales are us > eu > jp, which reverses the last two for the way the wii u has been going.

lol yeah, might be a bit premature but past trends have abundandly shown a turnaround would be a miracle in today's market. We'll see when FFXV comes out I guess

Mario Kart 8 sales was great.

Wii U sales was ok. I don't if a bundle with Mario Kart 8 now, would boost the consoles sales more than the game did. I mean 19k is not that excellent, but is
a good number, if you compare with the 7k average.

One impressive thing, at least for me, is that New Super Mario Bros U, sold 10.175 , maybe bundles, and the game total sales are 1.173.701 and Wii U total sales are : 1.764.866.
That attach rate.

I hope the console and Mario Kart 8 keeping on selling like this for quite a long time.

i'm guessing sales for the wii u will be down to 10k next week. the platform may have a slightly increased baseline for a little while, but i wouldn't be surprised if it's battling the ps4 again in the near future.

The word of mouth is more prone to come from the awesomeness that is the multiplayer aspect of the game. I never had a friend organize 2 Mario Kart partiesfor MK Wii during the same week (let alone organize a single party for this game). It's happening to me this week because the game is that good. Last sunday we were 5, we are 10 this time because we told more friends what they missed. Few games can have this effect on people, so yeah, that kind of word of mouth.

I'm expecting a 4 week bump (2 weeks down, 2 to go) and then back to 6k Club with the other consoles.

Vita looks primed to break the 10k barrier again too.

Decent sales for 3DS, Wii U and PSVita, the rest sold horribly bad. PS4 is almost dead in Japan already. MK8 did great and it should be able to keep Wii U selling over 10K for a while at least.

Excellent numbers for MK8! Wii U numbers not so great but it could be worse... That Wii U bump should stay for a few weeks and since E3 is next week let's see if it can increase a bit or at least mantains that position while MK8 continues to sell. Hope it can achieve the million mark just like Yokai Watch pretty soon.

joysound karaoke is unquestionably my most-played wii u game. it's pretty great! probably spent 3000 yen or so on it.

nintendo could easily market the wii u as the most authentic home karaoke system ever.

wow, ps4 really needs something to give it traction already. This is pathetic.

Wii U bump was much smaller then I anticipated. Actual game sales for MK8 was pretty good though.

Yes, just Japan. That said, we could assume a 50/50 split between iOS and Android if you like, though I believe iOS has higher download traffic for things like this.

SerkanToto said:
Tokyo-based mobile gaming behemoth Colopl (3668) today announced its flagship app “Quiz RPG: World Of Mystic Wiz” racked up 26 million downloads within Japan.

The new milestone was reached on May 31.

Quiz RPG stood at 17 million users at the beginning of this year.

...

First, Puzzle & Dragons was launched much earlier than Quiz RPG (namely in February 2012, on iOS first). When the Colopl title was released in Japan (in March 2013, on Android first), Puzzle & Dragons already boasted over 10 million users and had been advertised on TV for half a year.

Second, Quiz RPG is growing faster than Puzzle & Dragons as of late. While it took Colopl just 18 days to increase downloads from 25 to 26 million for its title, Puzzle & Dragons needed 37 days to get from 27 to 28 million.

I should have said top 100 though, where the only COLOPL game is a different title at 73: http://www.appannie.com/apps/ios/app/hoshino-daononyanko/

Quiz RPG seems to be 134 in top downloads right now.

But it's just not the same without the cheesy scenery videos!

Hopefully whenever they put out the PS4 app, they'll get rid of the hardware region lock. The Vita version works on US Vitas :(

games that will give the ps4 a substantial boost, or should, anyway, won't hit until next year. maybe even late next year. the system will be a ghost until then. but i suspect that once metal gear solid v and ffxv hit, whatever hardcore console market still exists at that point will start buying up ps4s on a regular basis.

hopefully Nintendo understands that times for a typical home console are gone in Japan, next one's gotta be radically inspired by the smartphone reality in terms of price and attractiveness, something different that will make at least part of that market decide to go out and buy that product

Just gives you the idea of the volumes in the mobile space. Temple Run just passed 1 BILLION downloads.

That's a whole lotta people. That's worldwide of course, but still. And Japan is far ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to popularity of mobile games.

it will either need to be that (i think the tablet idea came from the intro to tablets and not where they are now- which is what makes the gamepad particularly outdated), or it will have to be some sort of crazy machine no one sees coming. and the gamepad wasn't really that, at least not the same way the ds and wii were.

Pretty sad that the Wii U didn't get that much of a bump from Mario Kart. At least Mario Kart did well though.

Youkai watch has been amazing to follow. I wonder how high it can go. Once Youkai Watch 2 comes out, it will likely begin to drop off the charts.

You would think with the 3DS numbers the way they are, Nintendo would release a revision.
