Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

It's fun to speculate, and I'd love to play as Zelda, but it's almost certainly Link.

I hope there isn't a huge backlash when people find out it's not a playable Zelda, or other female character.

Speculation is fine but "It's clearly a girl" is only setting yourself up for a potential disappointment.

Have you seen Aisha Tyler's hands?? I think she's very gorgeous, but she's got some big hands.
A lot of girls don't have tiny tapered Disney princess fingers.
Hands aren't a reliable way to figure out a person's sex.
:p

Neither is looking androgynous.

The ponytail is a dead giveaway that it's a girl. I mean everyone's doing it even Kojima, Snake's a girl too now!

too many open world games with rugged girls lately

Boobs? No boobs.
Hips? Debatable but a previous Link had similar hips as well.
Ponytail? Not a clear indication of gender.
Weapon choice? Not a clear indication of gender.
Horse? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There are no feminine features that clearly puts this character as a girl compared to past iterations of male Link.

Would it be nice to have a change in protagonists? Sure.

But until then I'm just going with this character being male Link.

I'm curious to see where Aonuma's comment leads for this game development.

...hate me...
This is pretty pathetic when you think about it. People discussing the possible gender of a character. This should not even be a god damn issue.

This is BAD on who ever greenlit this character model.
It's called androgyny, and that discussion wouldn't even take place if Aonuma hadn't said that the character might not be Link.

What you mentioned would only be a problem if the character was supposed to be a very manly man or curvy woman. If it is not, I don't see the beef.

Wait.

Was it not explicitly obvious to everyone that was a girl? For real?

he/she looks either way to me to be honest; a male with some feminine traits, as Link's always looked, or a flat chested female. Not sure where all this overconfidence from people calling him/her a female comes from

Some of you should just photoshop and edit the picture and add more boobs to link, hell maybe an earing, and a little bit of make up, hell lipstick if you can. Paint that leather belt pink while your at it.

There is your task, now someone get on it now! I dare someone to photoshop that picture. Pls do not forget to add boobs.

Plus it probably means we can have a fundamentally different story from before (outside of LA and MM anyway.)

You're only setting yourself up for disappointment. It'll end up being the same "Golden godesses seal away great evil, form the triforce, evil breaks free, now you must save the world lest it plunge into darkness" like in every other game in the series. A female main character isn't going to change that.

I don't understand people going: ''OFF COURSE she was OBVIOUSLY a GIRL!''

Some of you aren't used to the Japanese culture I assume? Could just be a young male ''Link''.

Not that I have anything against the MC being a girl, I don't mind. It's just that it's not THAT obvious to me. :/

My theory is that it means that ''Link'' is you, because you can give him any name.

Oh, come on. Look how blunt the fingers are. Girl fingers are more pointy. Not to mention those are definitely man nails. I've never seen a girl with nails like those. ... Man, never thought I'd never talk about a Zelda character's nails.

I guess we'll see to which side of the table the crow is served.

I still say the lack of visible breasts confirms it's a male. Do flat chested women exist in the real world? Of course. But how many do you see in video games? Hell even 8 year old Zelda in OoT had them.

But it cannot possibly be Ravio. We've already seen what he looks like.
You see that he's dark-haired at the end of the game, which would be a pretty drastic change to make here.

While I don't think it's the case, put me in the camp of people who likes to think of it as Aryll or Aryll's descendant. Either way I think it would be cool to step away from Link as the character if only because it might finally let them step away from their pointless insistence on silent protagonists for the series.
They won't, I already know.
The hair and all is the right style to be link, but that ponytail seems like too bizarre of a change to be insignificant. They already toyed with concepts of playing as someone other than your typical Link with the wolf form in TP, perhaps we'll be seeing some sort of multiple-protagonist scenario. Or, probably more accurately, they're just making the character more androgynous so that when you name the character as "you," it can be imagined as either male or female without too much trouble.

If their doing the latter then they have to change links voice to sound....how does a voice even sound androgynous?

It could be another step on the Link andrognvolution, or it could be a flat chested young teen girl.

I'm beginning to like the Aryll suggestions.

And as long as the core game lives up to the Legend of Zelda name I could not give a rats ass about who is in the lead. Guy or girl, Link, Zelda, Aryll, Ganon, Midna, Impa, Groose.

I have a feeling the character will be "Link" no matter the gender though. Stoic, silent, almost completely sexless.

The breast debate reminds of the fact that there are still people who think Sheik is a guy. It's either Zelda, female Link, just plain Link (hopefully), or at the very worse in border-line "you're changing too much Aonuma" territory, Link is customizable.

:( hype is slowly, but surely, deflating.

Hyrule Warriors Link looks more feminine than this Link.

Also, my avatar is a guy but you wouldn't know it. That's that anime art style for you.

It's not the anime art style. One of my friends looks exactly like this, and she'd stab you if you called her a guy. And some of us are actually giving credit to the artist, because you can see the subtle female anatomy. But of course, some here aren't very familiar with that.

All I know is it not Link. Nintendo would never reveal link without his iconic gear.

And yet Shiek didn't have breasts...

We don't know the context for the character yet so for all we know it's a girl in disguise thus hiding her breasts.

What's with people using gender specific pronouns to refer to the character when nothing regarding their identity or gender has been confirmed?
