Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

Perhaps it's a co-op partner? A friend of Link's who accompanies him on his quest, who is AI controlled if you don't have a second player.

Oh shit, yeah. Maybe it's Link's daughter/son and we'll see a father/daughter companionship between them akin to The Last of Us. Would be pretty sweet imo.

If that's not Link it opens up the possibility of voice over for the main character. I'd prefer no voice though.

Didn't even think about this. Oh boy.

I could get down for a fully voiced Zelda game but you know the internet would go crazy.

Man I am stoked at the possibility of playing as someone else. Wonder if they will go the multiple protagonist route? Like you play as this new character (Zelda?) and Link at different points during the adventure. Regardless, Aonuma has my attention. I've not been this excited for a new Zelda since that 2004 TP trailer reveal. After playing this series for 25 years, I'm all for them trying and doing new stuff. Glad they are taking risks instead of playing it safe. Couldn't be any happier.

At this point I just don't want them to make the timeline too messed up. Having Zelda save Prince Link would impact everything about the lore they've created. The game in isolation would hold together, but when people speak of the legends, they only speak of one story.

And the story they speak of most, is the Legend of Zelda. Which presumably would be one where she were the hero.

Whatever it is, I don't want it to be a simple role reversal. Zelda having to save Prince Link sounds so lame. I'd like something new like Link fails his quest, so his daughter has to continue it.

Oh, yeeeaaaaah! I'd love to see them break away from as many traditions as possible while still preserving the absolute core. I'm so, so ready for this after having played EVERY Zelda game since I was 5 years old :D
Excited as hell.

Could backfire though when people find out it's just regular ole male Link, only prettier.

I don't think the uproar will be that big. If at all. We're used to good ol' regular Link. If it is him (which is think it is) then it's business as usual. I personally don't want another character.

I'm fine with it being Link, but I'd love to see a playable Zelda, either as a temporary playable character, a permanent one who plays alongside Link, or an optional one you can choose instead of Link.

Wasn't there a chart from Aonuma about things he wanted to change in Zelda and one of the things listed was "single player"? I'm with a lot of people here thinking this may be a co-op partner, and that would be awesome.

Some of you are jumping through hoops to convince yourself that it's most definitely a female. There's no most definitely anything. An absolute with little evidence is unlikely.

Speculation time: it's SS Zelda's and Link's son. The art style is so similar as is the somewhat futuristic enemy design that's very reminiscent of the old lost technology stuff in the desert area in SS.

Hopefully that co-op partner is computer controlled when playing single player. Or even better, you can swap out characters as needed (assuming they have different attacks/abilities).

If you had to use Zelda's magic to get thru some areas/puzzles, that would be interesting.

A new character alongside would be awesome. Even co-op. I agree with that. A main character change is what I don't want though.

A shame if that isn't Link. I was really excited for either an extremely bishie Link or better, a FEMALE Link. I don't think Nintendo has the balls to do that, though.

Great looking game, anyway. Looking forward for it.

This is an interesting and alarming trend, and I'm hoping Polygon will be able to use this data to make a projection about how many female Links we'll have in the future.

I was thinking about it and maybe the Skyrim like ambition made them consider a character creation scheme for this game.

Shocking twist; Link is the horse.

Seriously though, that is Link. And it isn't a girl either (however great that would be). We already went through this with people jumping through hoops to try say Link was a girl in Hyrule Warriors.

In the Zelda games with male protagonist we've encountered about 38 sages.

In the Zelda games with female protagonist we've encountered 0 sages.

Thus, I believe that Zelda Wii U won't feature sages as non-playable characters relevant to the plot of the game.

Actually those graph data are incorrect.

In the (unfinishihed) broadcast of BS Zelda (the one based on ALttP) there was a female Link:

Even if technically she was never named Link. That was more like a Mii in cosplay, like in Nintendo Land.

If Nintendo announces that Link is a guy, which trend dictates he is, this thread is going to be filled with great quotes such as "I can't believe it's still being debated. THAT's A GIRL"

And if the other way?
Can't wait for the screen caps of hundreds of posts, with big text underneath in bold impact, ''fucking told''.

It can go either way. But which do you think is the most likely? That Nintendo and Japan, which have a big cultural thing on tradition, would change Link's sex? Or that people are over analyzing and making themselves believe what they want to believe. Wait for the confirmation before it becomes truthfact.

To be fair, even if it's totally true and that character is a female, people are still over analyzing and making themselves believe what they want to believe.

They are NOT going to change Link's sex (unless there are character customization options).

“No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

A playable Zelda, or Link's sister/daughter/teenaged son are all possibilities. But it's also possible this is Link and we're just being trolled.

I'd say 50/50%, just because of all the talk about Nintendo wanting to change things up etc.
But yeah, let's wait and see,
and continue overanalyzing everything, haha.
