Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

I haven't trudged through this thread but has anyone considered this being Link's teenaged daughter? And you can also play as old Link with a cool beard?

2) Zelda is the main character, and you play with her for 90% of the game, with Link coming in somewhere in the middle to go search for some some dew drops of light or some chaos emeralds or something.
You and the rest of the Zelda traditionalists call it the worst Zelda game ever because it teased your one true hero, much like how the Metal Gear fanbase collectively lost their religion when you only played as Snake for half an hour in MGS2. This will be very annoying

This is pretty much I want but in reverse. The beginning has you playing as Link, but he loses, and you spend the rest of the game years later playing as a new Zelda, who is pretty much the batman of hyrule. Want it so bad. The Legend of Zelda shouldn't be the most objectifying game title in all of existence anymore.

This female Link and Princess Zelda conversation has me thinking of Kill la Kill

Neither of these were what I was suggesting at all. I was talking a character select screen or something with both characters having unique abilities, where both Link and Zelda are on the adventure together and you can switch out at any time. The story would involve both equally. My evidence being that Aonuma already teased multiplayer.

So Resident Evil 5?

That would have been my third possible scenario, but it would basically be a canonical, in-game version of the things happening on the internet right now. People would die.

Link being turned into a girl isn't a social injustice or "disrespectful." If it happens it happens and you will eat it up. There will be no petitions, no outrage. Just your little, sore nerd butt.

Yeahhhh, good luck with that. Fans have gone nuts over far, smaller offenses. Zelda isn't Watch_Dogs, it's controlled largely by a core fanbase. The only way your post would be true is if Nintendo could properly market TLOZ to the mainstream.

And I don't even care whether Link is a girl or not. This just needed to be corrected.

Someone probably brought this up, but what if it's create a character? Hence: open world RPG, not really Link because it's a custom-created lookalike, different clothing because it's equipped gear, no sword because it's a different class (archer) and so on.

Open-world RPG = OK.

Custom-character = Meh. I'd be angrier but then Link never talked anyway.

The problem with that is zelda isn't a rpg and that it wouldn't be zelda

Good luck with that. Just the way that trailer went gave me a feeling that with this game they're trying to challenge traditions.

I don't look forward to having this discussion for a year.

Aonuma is killing us here. :(

I honestly can't think of many titles I want this year anymore... I think about 5 I was tracking have been pushed to 2015 anyways.... Soo...retro/replay 2014.

I humbly submit a new theory:

Why isn't this horse Epona? If Link is now female, she could still ride Epona. If this is a new character who was still a reincarnation of the hero, he or she could still ride Epona. But this horse is clearly not Epona. Which says to me that Epona exists in this world and this is a different horse. Epona is Link's horse, so therefore Link exists in this world and this is not Link. Maybe it's Zelda (has she ridden a horse before?). But I'm betting on this being Link and Zelda's daughter (or son).

Look, this horse looks a lot like Epona just like this character looks a lot like a mix between Link and Zelda. It could be the foal of Epona.

But yeah, who knows. I'm just pretty sure this ain't Link.

That's my theory too, just because Aonuma's hint doesn't have anything to do with gender, but with the name of the character. There have been multiple Links, and you can name yourself Link regardless, so it seems to me that if it is not "Link," the most logical interpretation is that there's another character in the story who is explicitly named Link. But I don't think it's Zelda either, as there are too many similarities to a typical Link. If it's Zink, the child of Link and Zelda, it could explain a lot. Or not, maybe Aonuma is just screwing with us.

The only honest answer is that none of us really know who "Zink" is or his/her role in the story. No point in getting overly invested in speculative fan-fiction.

The only possible way I can see Zelda being the main char is if there was no Link character at all. Nintendo already tried switching main chars with MGS2 and it wasn't pretty.

Looking at those pics of Link that RMS posted some more, look at the eyes. Link's eyes are generally kind of hard. This new "Link" has much more rounded eyes and they're rounded at specific points that implies female.

I haven't trudged through this thread but has anyone considered this being Link's teenaged daughter? And you can also play as old Link with a cool beard?

A few have. I very much like the idea of that being a possibility, bearded Link though... hehe

In most games that is a legit statement.

Alright, but not all real women have boobs, especially the way they're portrayed in popular media. If Zelda is the first series to acknowledge this, I gotta say I'll be a happy camper

It's hard to say given the lighting but, going by the TP Link, it does seem like this new Link, or whoever it is, has a bit of a thinner nose. The bridge I can't say for sure but, nostril to nostril, it isn't quite as wide.

If this angle on the new character's nose helps any, here it is:

Old? Seems this was a joke and the comment was taken out of context. It was Link.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma told MMGN the comment leading to rumours the character we saw might not be Link was taken out of context, and was intended as a joke.

"It's a rumour," Aonuma said with a chuckle when I asked him about the speculation buzzing around online.

"Actually that comment I made jokingly," he said. "It's not that I said that it wasn't Link. It's that I never said that it was Link. It's not really the same thing, but I can understand how it could be taken that way.

"It seems like it has kind of taken off where people are saying 'oh it's a female character' and it just kind of grew. But my intent in saying that was humour. You know, you have to show Link when you create a trailer for a Zelda announcement."

More like Mario 3D World. You can play the whole game in single player or multiplayer, and you can play as either Link or Zelda, the only difference being that you can change mid-gameplay (while in single player) to either character.

What would be the point, though, if they more or less have the same abilities (like Mario 3D World, save for a few tweaks here and there)?

A Zelda game where you switch the characters like that probably have the two characters have distinct abilities that you need to switch between in order to get through obstacles.

People would be irked that the game is more of a hollow challenge-room fest like Four Swords instead of a mainline Zelda. The story implications of that would be really convoluted, too.

And it's all in service to still keep Link as a playable character? I mean, I don't understand what you have against one game doing something different when you still have (and will likely continue to have) plenty of games starring regular Link.

Might be not a bad thing though. Who knows? Kinda exciting, huh?

It's funny, some people complain about the staleness of the franchise and others don't want anything to change. I guess this is just another situation like that, and that's just how it's always been.

Well they are changing what I've been saying has been stale, so I'm glad about that. There's just some stuff that seems odd to change for the sake of it, and Link's character is one of them. If there was a really interesting way to do it, then maybe, but just for the sake of it? No.

Why not playing with Zelda?
Why changing Link?

Man, it's difficult to have Zelda as your favorite franchise. Fanbase is pretty crazy.

That is exactly how I took his statement anyway, people really blew it out of proportion. Also:

However, he doesn't want players to focus too much on Link's appearance in the trailer.
"I don't want people to get hung up on the way Link looks because ultimately Link represents the player in the game," he said.
"I don't want to define him so much that it becomes limiting to the players. I want players to focus on other parts of the trailer and not specifically on the character because the character Link represents, again, the player."

This character looks like a combination between Skyward Sword Link and Zelda to me.

Again relying on a friend here, but at the end of Skyward Sword,
Demise curses those who have the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero, and vows the reincarnation of, essentially, Ganondorf, Zelda, and Link. A child between Zelda and Link would indeed have the blood of the goddess (Zelda possessed the Triforce of Wisdom) and the courage of the hero (Link possessed the Triforce of Courage), which pretty much makes this character potentially fill both Zelda and Link's roles.

What if they gave Link a red mohawk? Who cares?
Is this a gender thing? If so, what about being female makes Link "not Link" anymore?

All of the personality traits given to Link so far in this thread could just as easily be attributed to a girl. To claim otherwise is kinda actually sexist. So let's not go there

I really care! XD
I was pissed when I knew that SS Link would be right-handed. I can't even imagine he being a girl, an old man, having a red mohawk, no hair...
Zelda is serious business.

That is definitely not gonna happen. Although it could be a New Game+ thing like the pyjamas in Wind Waker.

Who knows, they're trying to push shiny new things in this one, maybe they'll go with a new out--yeah, he'll be rocking the green hat. ._.

Please have an alternate of the blue outfit.

The better thing to point out is how many people now have to admit they were attracted to male Link because they thought he was a girl. XD

tbf I've always been attracted to Link. OuO

But anyways, I didn't mean to offend anyone if I did, and I'm sorry if anything got taken that way, as I know these areas are very sensitive.

I really just don't want a customizable Link future.

Now you know that's not true. Link wins every single "best character ever" poll on Gamefaqs every year. People are extremely attached to this "faceless avatar."

No one would have sent angry petitions at Nintendo over Space World 2001, if we didn't care about Link's character. o____o

You're talking about my favorite character ever here.

I really like you!
