The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - E3 Gameplays, Interviews, Articles: Compilation

Oh damn, I have a hard time with the age of them, the girl running was on her 30s no?

The girl on your avy is on her 30s too? Geralt on his 50s?

lol, Im sure I will discover all of this on the game.

Geralt is a witcher, they live pretty long and much longer than normal humans. Yennefer is a sorceress and AFAIR she is a lot older than Geralt.

EDIT: Ciri should be in her (early) 20s now.

That's what I imagined after I posted, they don't age normally.

:)

Yennefer is a sorceress. They all manipulate their looks to appear younger and more desirable.

Ashen-haired girl is Ciri who should be around 22-23 at the time of Witcher 3.
Yennefer is over 90 something, but looks young and beautiful due to sorcery.
Geralt is I think in his fifties, but due to being mutated he ages much slower than regular humans.

Yeah. Geralt believes Yennifer use to have a hunchback.

Many of the sorceresses when brought to the school had all sorts of magical alterations done to their bodies. Even things like magically resetting poorly set broken bones, to reforming facial features. I think Yennefer was one of the more drastic changes though (and is still not considered a beauty by sorceress standards). She is mocked behind her back by other sorceress.

The books are quite enjoyable if you like fantasy novels already, and well worth a read.

If you didn't have me at the trailer, you definitely had me at '100 hours is a speedrun'. To think of a game as painstaking and detailed as the Witcher 2 being made so expansive - that's crazy ambitious. I mean, there's a reason Skyrim looks like a dog's breakfast.

It's funny because I was watching the guy from CD Projekt Red on the Giant Bomb e3 day 1 wrap up (video here, the segment I will be referring to is right at the end at the 2h27m mark) and he asked the guys what game they thought was the best at the show, and how they gauge a game's popularity. Gerstmann explained no one really knows and that it's more of a gut feeling.

Later he was like "there should be an E3 for PC games" and implied that Witcher 3 is better than anything at the show but was being overshadowed by lesser console games that are "flashier" due to their menus.

When asked whether CD Projekt Red considers themselves PC developers first and foremost he said yes of course, and implied that consoles are only in the mix due to the pressures of the business.

It really came across like PC master race mentality imo. As good as Witcher 3 looks, the characters don't look as good as the Naughty Dog Uncharted tease (or even Last of Us remastered). And the idea that console games can't be as complex as PC games suggests the guy has not played enough console games (going back in time, games like Ogre Battle or Tactics Ogre were easily as complex as any PC game during that time) and Witcher doesn't seem necessarily that much more complex than something like the Souls games.

That said, I am very interested in the Witcher series now, and I would have bought Witcher 2 on PS3 had they ported it to the PS3 for us console peasants. I am still planning on picking up Witcher 3 (on PS4 or PC). I normally never buy PC games even though I have a capable rig, as I prefer couch gaming and controllers but this may be the first time I go with the PC version.

I wouldn't necessarily say Witcher 3 was my game of show, because there were a lot of "games of show" for me this year and it is one of them. But it is definitely on my radar. The series really grabbed my attention, and Spring 2015 is looking like it will be insane.

I don't know if it's a fair comparison with regards to the character models. In an RPG you have several hundreds of individually animated characters, a lot more than in a tight action adventure. It's why racing games and fighting games also have extremely high fidelity. You just have fewer things on screen, and more time to work on fewer set pieces. I still don't think anything can touch what we've seen with Crysis 3, character model wise. It's outrageous how good those models look!

That was just a monster hunter quest. It's not like they're a stranger to this series, and they were always optional too

That quest with the Griffin isn't optional.. and i like it that way
Yes, the monster hunting is going to be mostly side-quests stuff but Geralt is a witcher, and what do they do? well, get paid for killing monsters.. when you want something from a witcher, you don't give him a task of finding your lost cat, but to kill something that is bothering you or someone else..

Who is the most powerful sorceress Yennefer ,Philippa, Triss or Sile ?
From what I gathered reading around, I'm fairly sure Yennefer tops Triss by FAR.
But I have no idea of how she ranks compared to other powerful ones, like Philippa or Francesca Findabair.

I absolutely can't wait to meet the rest of them.

I await Philippa's comeback and not necessarily as a villain.I actually wish they let us have a more nuanced relationship with her.She was an interesting character with ambitious goals that didn't need to be painted as a villain per se.

Brilliant thread!

Such a great compilation of so much info on the game- I want to dive in, but I'm hesitant because I don't want to spoil anymore than I have to!

Game of foreva!

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
"collectible card minigame with a quest around it"
Plus horse racing and even boat racing, but with a small story around it. So it should not be generic stuff like in Ubisoft games.

Be still my beating heart!

I'm listening to the GameTrailers video preview and I'm like WTF.

That's part of what I like about this game. Instead of falling on standard fantasy and RPG tropes it sounds like it's pulling material direct from fairy tales and folklore. I understand that's by nature of being based on books from the 80's and 90's, but it probably makes a good case for more RPGs and other games to be based on fantasy novels.

Did we see any boat gameplay side the original trailer? I'm curious to see how that works. Boat + horse + caves + forests + mountains + cities + plains, so much diversity.

I hope they improved the combat, my biggest gripe in the game. Combat boiled down to attack attack attack oh shit getting ganged up on roll the fuck away. Playing on the PC with a controller there was distinct amount of input lag, or animation delay from inputting the command to action. Either that was from not having enough animation frames to transition from running to attacking blocking. Also lag of pulling up the spell selection screen. I wonder if I tried playing with mouse and keyboard the spell screen comes up instantly.

I just beat Witcher 2 earlier today and then started an Arena playthrough with the Combat Rebalance mod installed. It is much much more responsive and the skill tree is better balanced. Plus, you now block automatically (and can do it while running which makes archers much less annoying) and activate quen with what used to be the block button. There are a whole lot more improvements so I'd implore you to try it out, I thought the combat was pretty unenjoyable without the mod installed.

Also in the trailer alone we can see like 4 different locations, mountains, seas, caves, cities, etc.

One thing is for sure we ain't getting bored of the backgrounds vistas.

Just listened to the sample soudtrack.
I love full celtic/medioeval songs, it just capture the feeling of an epic journey so well.

That interviewer has amazing ability to switch from german into perfect english.
Also, Peter is awesome. I can't wait to explore some of those dungeons.
And exploring most of the houses ? Whoa. I just hope NPCs will have some kind of reaction to that this time.
CDPR said months ago they will, but I'm not sure if plans changed, meanwhile.
On a side note, glad to hear there will be big dungeons in the game. I wasn't expecting this since they were virtually non-existent in the previous games.

It's really like that Gamespot guy said in his video commentary: in a world where we are used to categorize different RPGs for what they do well and what they do poorly, this is sounding more and more like an RPG which is trying to do EVERYTHING right.

I just noticed that the game is supposed to have a Japanese version with full dubbing.
I have to say that, while isn't exactly my main concern, I'm quite curious to see if the game will catch any attention in Japan.

He says "You can hold a shield up and deflect arrows" while doing a holding a shield pose, why dont you think he is talking about actual shields?

Because Geralt doesn't use normal shields, he has Quen sign, so why would he use normal shields, when he has a better option? and it would be even bigger diversion from the books than the crossbow.. and they never talked about it and if that would be an actual thing, then they would show it in some of the gameplay demos

Yeah, it's mindblowing, especially considering they don't have over 500 people working on this like certain other games.

Yeah I was supprised by it as well, since its been so different in the other games, thats why I put it on the list.
I thought maybe it was part of the combat redesign, since he is talking about it taking some skill to do the deflection and quen being a passive skill and all

Edit: Yeah you are right misho I just watched the xbox one demo again and they actually pull of the deflecting arrow move there without a shield

I'm going to get started with the books. The first one is The Last Wish right?

Edit: Last Wish is a collection of short stories so the actual start of the saga is Blood of Elves.

Still read The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny, they both have stories that set up the later books.

Bit of a random aside but CD Projekt should definitely release a huge artbook including work from all 3 games. I have the digital artbooks from GOG but I would love a monster tome for my bookshelf.

Yeah. Dark Souls is combat focused. Mass Effect is story focused. Skyrim is exploration focused.
Witcher 3 will fuse all three into one wonderful package.
There is a new preview by RPGFan which sums this very nicely:

Most open world games these days are boring me with their checklists, high scores and random/repeated side quests. Witcher 3 appears to be an open world game based around story, characters and the actual world. I was really happy to hear that each and every side quest has been handcrafted to feel unique. Maybe more developers should take note...

http://rpgfan.com/previews/The_Witcher_3_Wild_Hunt/

Then there is absolutely delightful interview which made me laugh out loud at certain moments:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVXMYlHdzGY

I love how John Mamais spoils the game in it :D

And a tiny bit sceptical Polygon preview, but quite fair:
http://www.polygon.com/a/e3-2014/the-witcher-3-the-wild-hunt

i hope this game has a lot of nudity.

This is kinda weird thing to hope for, but it is pretty certain it will have quite plenty of it. It is a Witcher game after all.

Is Sword of Destiny available in english? I know The Last Wish is.
Amazon.uk should be my best bet right?

AFAIK SoD is only available in fan translation, which is supposedly pretty good. I definitely recommend reading both LW and SoD, they set up the novels very well.

That polygon article is bullshit. I wouldn't call that a fair criticsm at all.

The guy decided mounted combat is the most anticipated feature in the game, then goes on to say he doesn't believe that its in there because CDPR has a history of releasing games below expectations....

Fair would be being critical of what was in the actual demo.

...And he goes far enough to describe them as "broken" as well.

I'm with you, it didn't strike me as fair at all, more like unnecessarily harsh.

Yeh this is a pretty terrible preview.

There were graphical bugs throughout the demo, including texture popping, clipping issues and strange hair physics. All to be expected in a work in progress, but nevertheless reason for concern.

Like what? To be expected but it concerns him, that makes a truckload of sense

I just finished reading the Sword of Destiny fan translation a couple of days ago. More spelling and syntax errors than you'd get in a professional job, but it's still a great translation in the same style as the official ones. And, yeah, despite being a short story compilation it definitely seems pretty vital to the overall saga (it's the one that introduces Ciri, after all).

But by far the most anticipated feature in the game is mounted combat

CDProjekt has a history of releasing games that don't live up to expectations. They've released broken and buggy products before

Polylol.

Any word on the book being published in english? I'd like to have all the books sitting on my shelf eventually.

OK, I'm ordering The Last Wish and Blood of Elves through amazon.
Both books for less than 10 euros but shipping takes it to 20... God damn. I hate it when I end up paying more for shipping than for the item.
Still, about 10 euros for each book is ok.

Has there been any confirmation of old characters returning and the status of old allegiances/enmities being carried over?

Still a lot of mistery there, since the game was announced this has always been my biggest concern, I've brought it up in pretty much every TW3 thread lol.
Most of the Witchers from the previous games seem to be present. Other than that, not sure except for obvious characters like Triss and Dandelion.
