NPD Sales Results for May 2014 [Up1: Wii U Hardware]

I do like everyone here roclaiming Wii U as dead even though the analyst who reported the numbers started out by stating the console being up 90% YTD. Only in GAF hyperbole does a console that sees stronger sales YoY equate to the console being even more dead. :p

Agreed. It's numbers might be disappointing relative to MK8's potential, but they're definitely not bad in the grand scheme of things for Wii U.

Why are people so quick to jump to the "Wii U is dead" conclusion?

June is the moment of truth. 2 days of Mario Kart 8 on the market is hardly enough time to be conclusive.

Because most of them actually hope for this to be a reality, so they will shout if from the rooftops in an attempt to shape the narrative.

Apparently, if it doesn't go from 33K to a million in 2 days, it's all a flop.

I think 6-digits is guaranteed for Wii U next month.

There's nothing really preventing two hundred thousand extra sales from bundles in two days, except that two hundred thousand people still didn't want to buy a Wii U. Mario Kart does have great legs but like all video games there is still a very significant percentage of total sales on launch day. Wii U sales will still be up for June over earlier months and possibly even May but it won't be anywhere near a healthy number, at all.

I was lowballing with my 80k prediction for Wii U. It managed to do even worse than that. I'm still curious to see if MK8 outperformed Watch_Dogs PS4. Need those creamsugar numbers.

Sorry I wrote that unclearly. It's 60K for this May and 32K for last May.

Stop correcting yourself! MY PREDICITONS :'(

Mario Kart has long legs since the series is one entry per gen/system. Pretty sure the game will chart next month too. We'll see though.

Mario Kart Wii is #64 in the Amazon best sellers list and it's a 6 year old game. MK8 will have legs, no problem.

Just because Smash gets delayed, that doesn't mean they can move Hyrule Warriors up. Maybe they thought late May for Mario Kart, July for Smash, and then September for Hyrule Warriors. Miyamoto seems to have a clear philosophy of "make the game right, not on time", and I think that's all we're seeing.

You're seemingly misunderstanding what I am saying.

Hyrule Warriors comes out in early August in Japan.

It comes out in late September in America.

They need to prioritize worldwide releases. This is probably not a situation where localization is holding this game up and, even if it were, that needed to be fixed ages ago. Worldwide releases are how all the major players in the industry do it or at very least they prioritize the US. Nintendo had an opportunity for games to come out as closely as they could to Mario Kart and they have failed on an extremely fundamental level.

Smash Bros. 3DS is also a game that is coming out several weeks first in Japan and then in America. That's not related to the Wii U situation, it's just really dumb.

Yeah I'm sure it will. It will probably raise the baseline sales for Wii U for the rest of the year too. Don't expect it to outsell PS4 any month this year even with a price drop. Speaking of price cuts, why didn't Nintendo announce one at E3?

Time will tell right?

It might be time to drop the tablet from the WiiU bundles and make it optional. It offers as much to games as kinect offeres to the XB1.

A 200$ "pro bundle" with Mario kart and a pro controller would sell pretty well I think.
