Halfway through the year, what's the best game you've played so far?

Dark Souls 2 by far, no contest.

Others I have enjoyed would be MGRR, Stick It To The Man and Battleblock Theater and of course Fallout 2, but I don't know if that counts.

Mario Kart 8. It's the game I've played the most so far and its constantly fun. Given the release schedule for the rest of 2014, only Bayonetta 2 might surpass it.

Chalk another vote up for Wolfenstein, which I enjoyed greatly.

Like others though, the Destiny Alpha got its hooks well and truly into me, and I'd say that in a heartbeat if it were 'allowed'!

Ground Zeroes and Dark Souls II for sure.

If I was forced to pick one?

I'd Fulton recovery my ass right out of that situation.

Arcade Mode: Gundam Vs. Gundam Next PLUS+
Single Player: The Last of Us
Multiplayer: None.

I'm running through my backlog.
Edit: 2014?
Titanfall was fun.

Sorry Wolfenstein, but it is probably Dark Souls 2. I am a big fan of the ex-Starbreeze guys, but something is missing from Wolfenstein that keeps it from being a strong GOTY contender. The technical problems on PC when trying to activate basic functionality like MSAA were a big hassle, but more importantly, the old school teleportation solution to transitioning between levels felt really detrimental to the experience of playing the game.

For example the much hyped train story sequence - it looked really impressive in preview videos, but in the actual game the sequence felt crammed in between two levels. They tried to create an oppressive world, but the constant teleportation between story sequences and geographically distant locations (even using ridiculous stealth helicopters) made it really hard to immerse yourself in the world and feel the oppression.

I mean, imagine how effective that train sequence would have been if it had been preceded by escaping the military checkpoint of the previous level, hiding with a fake identity among other civilians, presenting forged paperwork to get on the train and getting to explore the train as a detailed location. All of this while being paranoid about being detected and with various stealth gameplay elements to make it possible to actually be detected. But instead of doing this, the game just cuts to the story sequence in question, which completely lacks tension as a result ...

Many of the levels that you "teleport" to could have been edited to be physically connected to the resistance headquarters hub, which would have required some effort from the developer, but would have vastly improved the immersion into the game world. Exploring the secret tunnels around the resistance headquarters in some short missions was a really fun experience, and I just wish that the developer had made more of an effort to facilitate that kind of connectedness between the hub and all the missions in the game.

So far I'd say: Transistor, Broken Age, Threes!, Hitman Go, Monument Valley and Destiny.

Dark souls II - Just incredible the sense of achievment it gives you

Infamous was enjoyable

FIFA is the game I've played the most however.

Also picked up Fez and Guacamelee this year.

Usually I'd say The Wolf Among Us, but the latest episode really blew chunks, so I'll go for inFamous: Second Son. Great game, there just needed to be more of it.

Probably Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It has a couple of bullshit Hino moments in there, but it's a fantastic "one of those". If you like either franchise, you'll have a blast. My days were spent alternating between playing and wanting to play.

Runner-up is Half Minute Hero: The Second Coming for me. I don't think it's as good as the original, but I had a lot of fun with it.

Hmmm, I need to think for a bit.

Second Son is pretty average and hasn't really blown my doors off.
Resogun came out last year.
Ground Zeros was pretty amazing, but short and had little story.
Dark Souls II is good, but FROM hates meta-PvP and decided to break it and laugh in our face.
Xenonauts is everything I've ever wanted

So I think the answer is obvious, Metal Gear Solid 4
GOING FOR A HAT-TRICK

All jokes aside, Xenonauts.

So far PvZ Garden Warfare, I'm still playing that game. MK8 comes in a close 2nd. Every other game I've played this year has been kinda blah; really under whelming year so far imo.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The music + level design = a majorly delicious game! And I still need to go back to finish off the K levels (2 more :< )

edit: 2nd would probably be Broken Age. Had a great time with the first half... we needs the second act now T_T.

  1. Infamous: Second Son
  2. Transistor
  3. Child of Light
I wish Transistor was longer, if it had been then it would've definitely been top of the list.

Destiny Alpha, closely followed by Child Of Light.

I though Watch Dogs was such a let down. Finished it last week and will never go back to it.

Surprised MSGV: Ground Zeros is getting a few votes. I've not started it yet but now I'm looking forward to it even more now. An hour and still the best game this year, amazing.

Shadowrun Dragonfall. Then again it's the only game I played this year.

I should try Child of Light, it looks interesting and I heard about it in this thread for the first time

Dark Souls 2. I haven't played that many other games this year though, because of time and money. But even then, it's a great game and I'm having lots of fun with it. I just wish the game was less frustrating when you're playing a SL1 character. Going through the game at SL1 was fun the whole way through in Dark Souls 1 but here it's a pretty masochistic experience at times. I had to take a break a create a new normal character, and I'm having heaps of fun again. I guess the game just isn't geared as much towards low level playthroughs.

I don't know whether it'll stay my favourite game of the year after all is said and done, since I still plan on getting Bayonetta 2 and The Evil Within. I'll also get The Last of Us: Remastered if I go ahead and buy a PS4 after uni is over. I don't think it'll end up my being my favourite games because I put importance on replayability and it doesn't seem to be the kind of game that offers much in the way of that, but I'm still very much looking forward to finally playing it. Ha and I'll get MGSV: Ground Zeroes if I can get it for a reasonable price.
