Precisely. For someone who's known to be such a harsh critic of everything, Amir0x seems to be buying into a lot of that babble. Developers often like to describe their creations in grandiose terms, and even when they're technically correct, more often than not all that ends up amounting to very little in actual code and perceivable end result. That said, Driveclub is evidently a gorgeous game, but I'd really refrain from comparing the two at least until we've seen more of both, and even then this is probably not the right thread. For what it's worth, Horizon 2 has made a far better first impression on me with its gameplay reveal, although recent showings demonstrate that Driveclub has undoubtedly profited from its protracted development.
I'm a known graphics whore, and I don't consider that an insult either. Unlike some people,
I've made it known I don't buy into dream pap about so-called "next-gen gameplay" or any of that nonsense because it's essentially always nonsense - I want refinements to tried-and-true gameplay before I even care about the developer's next lame gimmick or other. It's why I abandoned Kinect long before Microsoft did, because gimmicks don't appeal to me (or did not pick up EyeToy, for that matter). Which is partly why Forza Horizon 2 is exciting to me, because it's a lot of refinement on a formula that worked really well. It's changing up just enough to make me excited for the new it does do, but it's sticking to what worked as well to not ruin good gameplay mechanics.
Everything being dynamic doesn't need to impact anything related to gameplay for it to be incredibly enjoyable for me, because it adds to the visual impact. I find it amusing you think this presents some conflict to my criticism - I don't pretend gameplay is more important than graphics, and have always made it clear that visuals are an equally important element to gameplay and audio design in my view.
From a pure graphics perspective, there's no competition. But Forza Horizon 2 is more exciting to me because it offers a good visual presentation (albeit inferior to the game were were comparing it to) AND by all accounts superlative gameplay that, at the moment, is seemingly much more exciting than most racing games right now (and Forza Horizon 1 was excellent). The combination works to propel it beyond my excitement for other racing games. I am skeptical that they can get THATOTHERRACINGGAME to a place that puts it into the pantheon of top tier racing games. I'm just not remotely skeptical about its visuals, we can see it, we can read their technical breakdown and from this analysis I can see how far beyond anything else in the field it is technically (for consoles - but as I said, it's attempting effects no PC racing game has even tried in a few places). But my analysis stops there; it's a nuanced perspective.
