All this time and I didn't realize where Shadow's eyes were (FF6)

I never saw it the way OP saw it... why would a Ninja wear goggles?

why not?

I'm glad I never had a problem looking at it correctly because the Shadow sprite you guys were seeing looks goofy as Hell. lol

People really are terrible at understanding those sprites, huh? I've always saw Agahnim as intended, and this one with Shadow's eyes is even more absurd to me. Even if you didn't understand the sprite at first, you can see how it's supposed to be in his portrait...

Metapod confusion also doesn't make sense to me.

Secret of Mana, Watts:

Still don't know...

Yeah, doesn't exactly look like the guy in the screenshot. The thing to remember is that Mana started off as a spin-off of Final Fantasy, so the Watts sprite is based on the style of the dwarves in FFs of the same era. These guys:

So a big horned helmet with eyes shining out from the dark, like a black mage, and a big bushy beard below that.

.... What? WOW. I'd never even imagine such a thing, haha.

Shadows eyes are in a similar place as to where the eyes are on the rest of the cast. He'd have a hella-weird shaped face if the bobbles were up where the pupils of his eyes were suppose to be.

Aghanim also has a very classic anime style "Jeweled circlet" look to him, that fits with a lot of the armor designs of the time. Shadowy eyes are also a common design style for animations of the time. Though I can see this one a bit more, if one isn't familiar with anime styles back then (Reminds me of something from Voltron or Mazinger Z, armor wise.)

This is a pretty interesting window into misinterpretation, though. I'd... never see most of these in such a way. But I guess I'm deeply invested in the art styles from that era, and pixel art, so I just find it shocking, haha.

I've seen this one before, but still, pretty funny.

Shit, I only played FF6 first last summer and I totally saw the black guy with shades. I guess the portrait was just willful cognitive dissonance. It's cooler when Shadow's black and you read all his lines like he's Shaft.

Secret of Mana is one of my favorite games, and it took me until this thread to realize Watts was actually one of the dwarfs and not some skeletal creature.

I think Shadow confused me at first until I saw his portrait, which makes it pretty obvious.

I kinda get how some people got the Agahnim one wrong, but I personally never did.

As for me, I'll quote (heheh) my biggest sprite mistake.

806844-cave.jpg

It wasn't until their were pictures floating of Quote in the Wiiware update of Cave Story that I realized that Quote is not facing the side of the screen, but is actually facing the player at a slight angle.

That green pixel line on the right is not his nose, it's his other antennae, and that blue pixel line on the left is not his ear, it's his right eye (left from our view).

And I think I thought the other antennae on the left was a pony tail thing.

TBH, I've always preferred how I used to see him, his original sprite looks REALLY derpy to me now that I'm looking at it correctly.

I do not know what I am supposed to be seeing in them?

resident20evil20220e1.jpg

I mean I saw it as something far more demonic, Evil Dead looking. I saw it as more of a scrawled 2D image with a hollow eye socket and a large chin rather than the more human looking zombie with an eyeball and defined jawline and neck.

Wait, that's supposed to be the PAL cover? My PAL version has the US boxart posted above (German version). Do the covers also vary by country?

Yup, that's the PAL otherwise.

I can only wish to one day have such a keen sense of pixel awareness.

Just by googling Metapod you'll see different fanart of dfiferent interpreters of how metapod should look.

I am always amused by this as I never had a problem with the sprites in question (shadow or agahim) hahaha but I can see why some people think that way

oh 1 more example of misleading faces. The dark shine knight from Seiken Densetsu 3

Darkshine_Knight.jpg

you can see a menacing blue eyed knight or a happy old knight with a blue mustache

Holy shit I can see both! LOL!

You weren't kidding. Seems like more people think Metapod is a fiercely angry yet strangely ineffectual crescent moon with a pharaoh beard than a cocoon.

Shadow was easy for me, the one my dumb child brain took forever to process was Owzer.

So... he looks like a little frog man sitting on a beanbag and wearing a tiny beret or perhaps a fez. Is this wrong?

I feel like this should have cleared up any misconceptions with his sprite immediately. I mean, it's right there.

That picture kind of makes the confusion easier to understand. The "goggles" are still completely incomprehensible as to what it represents, and it also seems to fit perfectly over the uncovered portion. Like he just slid the goggles up off his eyes before having that photo taken.

I think that maybe that beanbag could look like his arms.

I feel the same way about the Agahnim misperception. Everyone apparently thought they were facing the terrifying wizard Andy Capp.

I always saw him the Andy Capp way. That's the thing, even as a kid I knew Ganon had to be the real villain so I never took Agahnim seriously. In that context his goofy appearance fit.

I still see it as goggles too even though I know the menu portrait is more detailed. I did at the time and don't know why I have such trouble with it.

I'm sorry, it's something you're born with.

:p

I'm just saying that it's funny/weird to me, I didn't know that so many people saw things "the wrong way".

Well, let's not forget most of us were 8-10 years old playing on our knees in front of a shitty SD tube TV and never bothered to give it a second glance.

When I first saw him I thought he had brown skin and an eyepatch. I still see that in his overworld sprite, regardless of what his menu sprite looks like.

This thread is just reminding me how different the sprites look compared to Amano's artwork. Some characters are way more different than Shadow even.
