I knew it the first second I saw him the first time.
Aah, I can see that!Never had any of the issues mentioned in the thread, however I did have one from FF6 as well.
For whatever reason, my brain registered Emperor Gestahl as a dog-man for the longest time. I saw a snout and big floppy doggy ears. It wasn't a huge stretch to me, since previous FF games had furry peeps before. It wasn't until I saw artwork of him much later that I was able to un-see my initial take.
This is amazing, I need to keep a tab on this for my next avatar.Seeing this thread reminded me of this of all things.
Behold...Captain Vidya.
And yes...this was a thing.
on the left is a guy with a mohawk, big ears and his mouth is agape. maybe a booger.
on the right is an obvious Julius Caesar in cartoon fashion....
but I'm told it's really a zora and a dragon??

why not?
I fucking hate Naruto
I don't blame you. Them 16-bit graphics confused a lot of people back in the day.

Reminds me of Q-bee from Darkstalkers. Her human looking eyes are non-functional as her real eyes are the giant insect eyes on her head.
Dark Souls basilisk. Those two huge orange things aren't its eyes. Look below, right above the mouth.
I thought his face with covered in a mask with him looking out of the things that look like goggles.
I find out his eyes are below that and mouth/chin are below that hidden by the mask. I somehow couldn't tell when playing it on the SNES.

I doubt this is what you actually meant by your post, but this is how I envisioned it:
It makes the image ridiculous, because now I can picture myself mowing down scared zombies.
And that looks like a completely different character!
Something went wrong somewhere.
Always thought that was his hair.
Beanie. Yeah, I know.It's not?
Ryu doing a dragon punch in the lighting.
Beanie. Yeah, I know.
Nope it a hat.It's not?
The lines and dots in Lucca's face are not her eyes and a mouth, but her eyeglasses seen from profile.
Both. Yeah I know.Nope it a hat.
Haha Holy crap! That needs to become a thing.
Now I'm curious on where do you see the Julius Caesar.
Is this supposed to prove its a hat? Looks like it gives even more evidence that its a head band...
Pretty sure it was discussed here, but Q Bee is pretty creepy with her "hair" eyes.
It pointing to his brown hair.
Maybe its my phone, but that looks like just darker shade of his hair/hat color.

I used to think Grahf had a really long face with a stupid talking smiling thingy.
He kinda still looks like a frog man, or at least a creature man. Remember, this is also a world where a wolf-headed thief named Lone Wolf exists, as well as Umaro. It's quite plausible that other strange humanoid "creatures" live in FFVI's world.
I think to this day, I never understood what I was looking at. Some sort of weird mask, but it's so... bizarre and counter intuitive.I used to think Grahf had a really long face with a stupid talking smiling thingy.

Though Gestahl, I knew he was an old man.
