All this time and I didn't realize where Shadow's eyes were (FF6)

As a kid goomba's in SMB always looked like bird heads to me;

After almost 20 years, and having beaten every Pokemon game, I can say that my mind is well and truly shattered by this.

I always saw an angry face with the nose, to the extent that I had to really force myself just there to see anything else. Amazing.

I thought his face with covered in a mask with him looking out of the things that look like goggles.

I find out his eyes are below that and mouth/chin are below that hidden by the mask. I somehow couldn't tell when playing it on the SNES.

were you playing on RF?

You mean the red bit isn't his mouth?

I call bullshit. Why would you have a flesh tone and a red patch if it isn't a face?

I am always amused by this as I never had a problem with the sprites in question (shadow or agahim) hahaha but I can see why some people think that way

oh 1 more example of misleading faces. The dark shine knight from Seiken Densetsu 3

Darkshine_Knight.jpg

you can see a menacing blue eyed knight or a happy old knight with a blue mustache

lol fuck
i dont know if i would have seen that old man face unless it was pointed out to me, but now i can't unsee it

Shadow only confused me when he was facing front (ie. the downwards sprite). In the sideways sprite his eyes are pretty clear.

Unrelated but I was more shocked when Shadow sent Interceptor out the first time on my like 5th playthrough of FFVI and I discovered that Limit Breaks were in FFVI.

Yeah FFVI is so easy that the limit breaks hardly ever get a chance to happen.

Shadow was easy for me, the one my dumb child brain took forever to process was Owzer.

Yup, ditto. I couldn't really figure out what this was supposed to be. Pixel graphics + blurry TV's of the era made from some creative perception.

I still remember the first time I looked really close to the TV screen and realized the FF6 sprites had their eyes fully open. I always though they were more like Gary Larson's cow drawings.

If you hide the "nose" it becomes obvious.

Between Shadow and Agahnim, did some of you NEVER look at artwork or manuals or anything? Heck wouldn't the menu portrait of Shadow give it away?

Regardless of whether or not you saw/see Aghanim correctly, the sprite is kind of a fucking mess. They tried to cram way too much detail into that front-facing sprite.

You weren't kidding. Seems like more people think Metapod is a fiercely angry yet strangely ineffectual crescent moon with a pharaoh beard than a cocoon.

So... he looks like a little frog man sitting on a beanbag and wearing a tiny beret or perhaps a fez. Is this wrong?

Looks like an old man with closed eyes wearing some sort of headband?

I'm most entertained that some people sound genuinely insulted that their favorite shitty sprite character looks goofy.
Loving that friendly old knight with moustachio

Let's be honest, the sprite work on Shadow was bad. The guy looks like a scuba diver. It was remarkably stupid to design his bandana to look like goggles and then give him nearly impossible-to-see eyes below.

FFVI is one of, if not my all time favorite game. And I always thought of Shadow as a weird guy with a cool dog dressed as a scuba diver.

I only actually saw the eyeball and jawline in this within the past couple of years and it ruined it forever.

I doubt this is what you actually meant by your post, but this is how I envisioned it:

It makes the image ridiculous, because now I can picture myself mowing down scared zombies.

I thought the same thing with Shadow, that he had goggles on or something.

As far as Agahnim, turns out I saw the sprite "properly" except I saw the black spot under the eyes as his mouth.. But I remember when I was a kid saying "man this guy doesn't look anything like the one in the instruction book!"

Also @ FF6 Owzer

Check his artwork. He basically is a messy blob of a person, so that sprite is spot on.

I thought those were his goggles. Yes, his face didn't have goggles on the menu picture, but I just never connected that as a kid. I played SNES over RF then, so the part where his actual face is was basically impossible to notice.

You guys weren't RGB modding your SNES and buying professional CRTs in your offtime from elementary school?

Losers.

I never got a single one of these wrong. Get your eyes checked or something guys.

Lol this guy gets it. You're all a bunch of failures.
