Bungie: "We have to earn the right to make a Destiny sequel"

Speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently, Bungie’s Community Manager David Dague told us that the company does not want to scare gamers off by committing to a decade of Destiny titles.

Instead the developer will wait to earn the right to release a follow-on to the first-person shooter.

Asked if there are plans to make a Destiny sequel and whether the Destiny universe will be the next decade of Bungie, Dague stated: “If we earn that right, we would love to explore those possibilities.”

He added: "We have to earn the right to put a number on the box. Right now it is just Destiny.”
As well as addictive, ground breaking gameplay, Dague has suggested that the impact of the Destiny narrative will have a large say as to whether or not gamers demand a sequel.

“We have to do our jobs to build a big, beautiful world that people do truly want to explore further,
” he told us. “We have to capture their imaginations with a story that has them asking more questions as they get to the end of this first game.”
“We could make this a daunting investment for gamers – and I’m not talking about a $60 investment, I’m talking about an emotional investment,” he said.

“This is kind of our first date – take a step into this world and play this game. If we told someone ‘we’re going to be together for 10 years’, then we are the overly attached developer.”

Just reboot it and do another origin story. It'll be fine. Numbers are shit and subtitles even more so.

Serious response: They've signed a 10 year deal and Kotick splurges a lot of money on this. Of course they will make a sequel, who are they even kidding?

I appreciate this mentality. Shows that they have passion for their work and aren't going to churn out identical sequels and dilute the franchise.

It is great so far. Definitely Day 1 buy.

Earn the right ? They signed a publishing deal of 3 games over 10 years minimum. They are a year late already. Gotta work on sequel fast... I wish Destiny was to evolve like a proper MMO with extension instead of direct sequels. But hey, this is Acti. So it will be DLC. DLC. DLC. Sequel...

Cool story Bungie, totally believe you

I'd say, going by the large amount of time I spent with the Alpha and the little on the beta (so far, I'll spending half a dozen hours on the beta), they're already on the right track in earning that right.

Because damn it if the full release isn't going to be as good as this.

I'd forgotten about this. Still doesn't make my point invalid, though.

Right earned.

Well we haven't played the full game yet. So lets not just jump to conclusions. A dozen or so hours in it could suck. Who knows?

It will probably be awesome though. Alpha/beta impressions seem very positive and we all know that Bungie tends to make great games. That doesn't change the fact that we don't know for sure yet.

But lets also be honest and say that it's getting a sequel whether or not it "earned it's right" simply because Activision is pumping a lot of money into it.

The cynic in me says that this is just lip service, but even if that is the case, this is the message I would want Bungie to put forth. I have started getting used to devs and publishers to being up front about their crappy business decisions even before a game is released. Here's hoping for the best.

Let's see... Marathon 1, 2, 3
Myth 1 & 2
Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, Reach

Riiiiiiight. "Earn" the right to make sequels, when that has been the majority of your output.

Good job with the hyperbole.

Well, that seems to gave changed already as they've already announced 2 expansions for Destiny. That contract has changed a lot since the Zampella/West vs Activision thing when it was made public.

Of course they will get a second go around...That said, Im glad they had enough PR sense (and hopefully culturally) to think about it this way.

Well in the old contract, Activision said they could bail out of the deal if Destiny fails to sells 5 million. I wonder if that clause is still there and what the figure had been revised to now that PS4 and PS3 are involved.

I think this is being misinterpreted. Yeah they are planning on making a Destiny 2 but the focus is about making Destiny as good as it possibly can be. To that end, they aren't concerning themselves with the specifics of Destiny 2 but rather making sure that Destiny itself is a property worthy of expanding on.

Couldn't a "major" retail release easily just be Destiny + expansions like what World of Warcraft does (I think)?

I don't see them putting out Destiny 2 in 2 or even 4 years.

Considering that the Alpha was better than many full games, I can safely say that I will have zero issue picking up DLC and Destiny 2.

The real test for a lot of MMO type games is the end game and longevity, so I wouldn't be too quick to judge it as completely awesome just yet.

the expansions are most likely the "comet", it was just what they were calling the expansion packs. Unless they do have a big expansion pack next year.

I think Destiny has earned the right to be the first Ps4 game to use early access.

$25 gets you into early access, price goes toward final game in the end.

Do it Bungie / Sony. Do it. But drop that f'in 8 level cap!

I don't think you understand what early access is for.
