Holy shit though, $15 controller for SNES. What's a typical msrp on controllers now $60, give me a break
I don't remember what they cost for PS2, etc. back in those days, but it wasn't until the 360 that I remember being practically insulted by the cost of controllers (and accessories in general).

oh man, reading Console Wars makes this shit surreal too

poor Saturn, that model 1 lineup is NiGHTS & slim pickens, reminds me of why i passed on it...such a great library to dive into though!

and god, the feels of remembering how magical that Mario 64 kiosk was the summer/fall of '96 was, holy shit i had to start saving pennies immediately after playing it

Man, it boggles my mind to consider that games considered retro now would go for $60 regardless of quality back in the day. I mean, sure, the technology was cutting edge then...but $60 SNES games is way too much for me...

Amazing how ten or even five years can truly affect a game's price in the aftermarket.

I remember playing a Goldeneye kiosk and convincing myself to get the 64 first before I finally got a PS1. I remember 80 dollar 64 games at Sears. Man that was so expensive. PS1 seemed so cheap in comparison.

Didn't Ocarina of Time launch for $80? lol
I don't think that was the MSRP. Some stores marked prices up for certain games (especially SNES/N64). I remember FuncoLand asking for $90 for Shadows of the Empire.

PS2 controllers were $35 I think. That's what I always paid and I broke about 6 of them in various ways.

Also back in the day Toys R Us and other toy stores were notoriously high on game prices. Remember that the internet was limited and there was no online buying so you'd go to a store and pay the price.

Anybody else remember how shitty the Gamegear charge was. Like an hour and a half.

a lot of rechargeable stuff then sucked both as far as how long it lasted on one charge and how long it took to charge, now we have stuff that last weeks on one charge.

now I know why I was forced to get games from blockbuster for years. I don't think I had more then 3-4 ps1/n64 games that I actually owned

Yup. I had that power rangers movie game for it, and I mustve went through batteries like a maniac. 6 at a time

The mid-90's wasn't that long ago. Someone should post an ad from the late-80's... Now that would bring a tear to my eye.

None of this really affects me too much since I was 16 in 1996 and not like 9

but game slips hit me right in the nostalgia sweet spot. god damn

No one should assume that SNES games were commonly $70 based on those ads. Games at specialty stores like Toys R Us and Babbages/EB were about $10 more expensive than mass market stores like Target or Wal-Mart.

were?

I remember square RPGs like Final Fantasy III and Secret of Mana being upwards of $80-90 at Babbage's and Electronic Boutique. I regret selling my SNES collection when N64 came around :\

People were already getting to this, but $70 in 1996 is more than $105 today. That's absolutely bonkers.

The nostalgia hitting hard! :') All the console ads there announcing lot's and lot's of games while the N64 only announced with Super Mario 64. Talk about quality over quantity. That game was so freaking awesome and revolutionary that easily managed to sell N64s like pancakes that holiday even if it was the only game available for the console back then.

This is bringing me back. Those toys r us catalogs were hype as fuck when we got them.

Annnd I remember what I payed specifically for majora's mask (almost certainly the hypist at I've ever been for a game). $70 day 1 and $30 for the x-PAC needed to play it. My mom took me to get it.

I miss game slips..:(

Yes yes yes! Oh god yes!!!!!

Seeing the slips missing was absolutely heart breaking as a kid. I remember getting the last slip and taking it over to the retrieval window and what ever it was it was sold out. Man those were the days!

If you thought that was bad, go see what the Canadian prices were back then.

$94 Mega Man X comes to mind.

No, there's a lot of games still left only on the Saturn and in many cases the Saturn version is the definitive version.

Yea it was bad here in Canada. I remember paying 99.9$ for Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger... Make it 110$ with taxes...

At first I thought I was looking at a Canadian ad or something, with all that $69.99 nonsense going on. But from this thread's comments, it seems those prices were here in the US! Yikes... according to some online inflation calculator, $69.99 in mid-90s dollars translates to just over $100 in 2013 (latest year the calculator went to). Because that Alpha 2 for SNES, crazy expensive!

As for that Saturn controller... fighting game pad warriors everywhere have probably squeezed every single cent out of that $34.99!

OP, thanks for this awesome blast to the past! :)

I used to gaze longingly at those ads for hours on end. Kids/Teens these days have no idea how good they have it with the wealth of trailers and gameplay videos to watch in anticipation of an upcoming game or the Christmas drop. All we had were these ads and screenshots in magazines.

Man in a way I'm glad I waited to get a SNES.

Except when it comes to trying to buy Megaman 7 and X 3 carts today... Damn it.

Software prices seems crazy but hardware prices are what I think they should be now. The high barrier of entry bullshit is really annoying. Why is a 360 cost me $250 new?

Also handheld prices are stupid high now. Why did everyone have a Game Boy? Cost it cost freaking $50.

It was better. All of the mystery and anticipation is gone. There is simply too much information to be absorbed these days.

PC Software and games were also really expensive too. I remember being amazed to find Sonic 3 and Knuckles on PC on sale at Best Buy for $30, so me and my brother ended up getting it.

Anyone remember when half of Best Buy was PC software? Or when 90% of EB games was PC software?

whats nice about now too is if a game sucks you can see a review and find out most of the time then you had to buy it and find out after lol

those ads. right around the time I stopped playing console games. I had moved on to PC almost completely during that period and didn't come back to consoles until the PS2 was released. During that time:

X-Wing Alliance
Descent: Freespace
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces I & II
StarCraft
Unreal Tournament
Homeworld

...was all I needed.
