Thanks for the info, Toma!

You're welcome, just remember to do the release post once it has been released so its included next month. :)

Ha, so the September OP might be kind of crazy since I got to catch up on two weeks worth of Screenshot Saturday posts as well as this weekend. I'll try to only post about the most interesting games...

Eager to finally play Proxy Blade and Shwip

So Toma, I remember you had some negative expectations about Eidolon after that extended gameplay video. Has the game proved to be better than those expectations?

Much much better than those first impressions, but something still seems a bit...off about the pacing. Its a lovely game and one of the best we featured this year but I'll need to play more to see what my issue is.

Had a go on Clusterpuck99 since it's sale is dropping off in a few hours and can firmly say it's probably not worth it for most people. It's enjoyable enough in its simplicity but it lacks the character of other local versus games and I doubt anyone will enjoy it for long when games like Samurai Gunn, Towerfall and Sportfriends are out there.

Although on one positive note, the ability to put 20 AIs onto the field is rather amusing for a bit. Having a chaotic 10 on 10 battle on the already relatively small maps is really something.

Have played a bit of Lovely Planet. Usually not into these kind of games, but it's so cute and charming and the gameplay so satisfying it's hard not to like it.

Wary about Eidolon too, but I think I'll give it a shot. Not really big on survival games, and I didn't like Proteus or Dear Esther. And this seems like a mix of all of those. But something about the screenshots and videos I've seen are very enticing.

Hand of Fate - $25 for Alpha (PC, Mac, Linux)
OmqRW3J.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/266510/

In a cabin at the end of the world, the game of life and death is played. Draw your cards, play your hand, and discover your fate. Hand of Fate is a hybrid roguelike/action-RPG/deck builder, in which the player builds a set of cards into a deck, which is then used to deal out the dungeon floors through which they adventure. Upon entering a combat, all of the cards the player has collected fly into their hands as fully modeled 3D assets, and combat begins.

This video made me really interested in it:

Hey Moobabe, our reviews made it to Eidolon's Steam store page and posted to Ice Water Games' official hybrid tumblr/site.

Sweet! I had no idea!

No more Early Access for me (still liked Sunless Sea), but great to hear Darkwood is good.

Time to buy Eidolon, then.

Good man!

After reading the reviews of Eidolon by Moobabe and Cheesecakerecipe I want to play this game.

Is anyone from here going to Gamescom?

Another good man!! I wish I was going to Gamescom this year but I left my press application way too late. I'm absolutely never going on a public day again though. Nightmarish stuff.

Bookmarking!

Now beginning Eidolon.

Yes!

Same, lets go!

YES!

My Eidolon savegame just auto crashed every time I loaded it and the backup savegame doesnt help much either. Restart it is.

... meh.

Toma

I wondered why you were reloading so often - sucks :(

Yeah annoying, buuut since I need to restart anyway... any clue on the whereabouts of that tower with the binoculars?

Toma

Now you know I want to... but you also know how much I really want you to find it yourself <3

I just resetted my savegame 4-5 times and walked in slightly different directions to find a tower "near the start of the game" and still couldnt find it.

oh god and I haven't even finished checking out the bookmarks I made for the July thread!

There are a couple standouts this month, but Shadowcrypt is one I can really get excited about. Glad it got greenlit, that's going on the wishlist ASAP.

July was fantastic, quite a few surprises from last month and august seems to not let off with great games.

Same thing happens again now, I cant play Eidolon for more than 20 seconds until it crashed to desktop. The previous crash even deadlocked my PC, so I needed to hard restart it.

Not quite optimal. I appreciate Eidolon for quite a few of its gameplay approaches, but neverending CTD's are not fun.

Is it being a common occurrence with other players too?

There are some reports, but its hard to tell because most players ask about "WHAT IS THIS GAME LIKE????" in the forums. I gotta admit though that the contact with the dev seems to be ace, I wrote the dev a mail about my issues with the log files and he responded within 10 minutes that they'll look into fixing my specific issue.

I had some slowdown in the original release, which then improved, but I get an occasional lock which goes after a few seconds. I wonder if that's when you CTD.

Try emailing them - real nice guys.

Yeah, already did. I am getting these "locks" too, after which I still often continued, but now it seems to crash the game with the first one of these. Either way, they really still need to do some improvements and fixes. I definitely dont want to start the first hour again though, so either this gets fixed, or I'll need to downvote it eventually (which I dont want to) for not being able to play -__-

OP impressions!

Eidolon
Technical issues aside, this is probably among the best and most unique overall experiences I've played this year. Its certainly not for everyone though, and I'll need to play more to really be able to judge how its ranking among some other games I've played this year because its a really, really slow burner. Eidolon is an exploration game with some survival elements in a surprisingly large environment. There are a lot of things to like about the game, as the fantastic ambient sound, the story and minimalistic graphics, the beautiful and diverse night/day locations and mood it creates with weather conditions, the light survival elements which add to the immersion of "being" in the world, while 95% of the time spending just walking around. This creates the issue of the player potentially being easily lost in this huge world, if you need directions or are in a hurry to play, you will not appreciate this game at all. Surprisingly, this is also among its biggest strengths, as that vast wilderness and lack of direction makes you learn to read the surroundings like no other game lately. You get a rudimentary map and a compass, which helps you navigating across the map once you figure out how to read the map, the approximate distances between certain spots and finding certain landmarks. Very smart design decisions, which all add up to making you to feel being "in" the environment. However, I am a bit wary of the long term perspectives, you really mostly only walk and walking from one end of the map to the other can easily take 20-30 minutes. If the game doesnt change anything this might get old eventually, but even then the game never ceases to put me in awe if I stop a second and look around me. Original and great mood, basically what I wanted Proteus to be <3

Lovely Planet
Another minimalistic game, but the complete opposite of Eidolon. Fast, quirky, colorful and nonstop time attack shooting. Its a bit of a missed opportunity that the gam doesnt have steam friends leaderboard, which would have gotten me to replay the levels, but its definitely still a fun game and easily worth its price tag. I am not quite as enthusiastic about it as some others (though still "highly recommended" category), because I desperately miss a mouse sensitivity option and some other smaller issues. Some hit boxes seem a bit weird, the shooting mechanics while jumping seem a bit unintuitive and the first world overall isnt all that interesting. Tbh, after the first 20 levels, I didnt quite get the huge amount of love this game seems to be getting, so I kept going and I am really glad I did. Instead of something mostly focussed on time attack, these levels start getting harder and harder with devious traps around every corner, which finally warranted that Meat Box comparison Messof made in this thread, giving me that small edge of improvement with every run until I finally overcome these bite sized, but quite hard challenges. This felt actually fun instead of only going through the motion and a bite sized, challenge based and fast paced shooter is indeed quite novel, and a concept I need to applaud.

Avorion
Another space traversal/mine/combat/trade game, those really start looking all the same to me considering they all have the same base features and rarely differentiate themselves by something earthspace shattering. This one has a weird control scheme and bad graphics on top of the basic, but solid, foundations. Considering how may of these games there are out there, this one doesnt seem all that special or recommendable in comparison (still in development, so that might change of course).

baseless
Feels like a very basic alpha demo, but already shows a very intuitive yet unusual mouse only control scheme. Cool animations, but other than that, there isnt anything to it atm, curious about the eventual gameplay/level progression for the full version though.

Edit:
Another thing the Eidolon devs really could work on: Animations. Having death animations for enemies and improved general animations would add a lot to the grace and beauty of the game.

I played this at PAX this year, it was pretty good. Only concern I have was about the difficulty. It's a little too expensive for me to take a risk on for the moment.

Whats the concern with the difficulty? Too easy/hard?

Toma

My main issue was that fires don't seem to light the surrounding area. Would have been a nice touch.

Is there any point to stomping out a fire?

Too easy. Beat their demo level basically without being touched by any enemies.Obviously things could change, but that's what I know for now.

I should mention, that demo took me like 30 mins. maybe? It wasn't short and there was 0 challenge.

A comment on Crypt of the Necrodancer:

What do you mean with light on content? I really want to play it, but I am currently going through the Indie thread games for the current month and considering spending the 15$ on 3-5 other games instead.

I had a bit of an advantage because I watched streams before the game's release, but I beat Zone 1-3 (with 3 random stages + boss each) in ~6 hours, while repeating Zone 1 and 2 about 5-10 times each for practice. In that time I've seen all the enemies, items and environments the game has to offer right now. A Zone 4 is planned but not implemented yet.

Now all that is left is beating Hardcore Mode (Zone 1-3 in one sitting without upgrades) and doing speedruns. While that is a big part of the game and will occupy me for many more hours, there aren't any surprises left in terms of content and randomness. Basically, the meat of the game is in score-/speedruns, which might not be for everyone.

Ah, I see. A bit of a pity really. I might wait for the full release then, seems like I'd get 8-10 hours of content out of it with the last level added without speedrunning. Is there a decent steam friends leaderboard integration?

Definitely. It has separate leaderboards for score-, speedruns, daily challenges and seeded runs. They can be filtered by Steam friends and have built-in replays (which are mostly broken right now, but it's Early Access).

A comment on Crypt of the Necrodancer:
Just wanted to add:

Out of all the Early Access games I've seen, this feels the most like a full game. I don't think there would've been much outrage if the game was sold as a finished product. The dev still calls the current release "alpha", so I assume there will be more content added to the game over time. Even if you think the $15 is a bit much, it's definitley worth watching for sales and future content patches.

Any word on the length of Eidolon? Just wanna know what I'm getting myself into in terms of time commitment.

Long, if you like wandering around and exploring every nook and cranny probably easily more than 30 hours. Maybe 15-20 on average.

That seems awfully long, but as long as the game manages to stay interesting throughout, I guess I can allow it. :p

That is what I am still trying to grasp, but I cant play more of it as my game doesnt start anymore. During the first 4-5 hours it definitely had me captivated, even when I was just wandering for 20 minutes through the woods, because of how stupidly pretty it looks and amazing it feels to walk through a wood and see the change of the fog/night/day cycle. Truly engrossing.

I cant judge whether the game will keep me hooked with just that for 20 hours, but I am willing to try and dive back into it as soon as the game allows me to.

Also, first surprise hit of the month found. With most games I rated high, I sort of expected them to be good, and one just caught me completely off guard: Lexicopolis. More impressions in a monster post later.

OP impressions:

Bewilder House
..is a first person puzzle game which mostly relies on clues you get from the labyrinth layout. Tedious controls and I didnt appreciate the way the gameplay is set up at all. The setting could be interesting though with some more polish and work. Might have been not really in the mood for this when I tested it, if someone has other impressions please share.

Bickadoodle
...is a very endearing adventure game that unfortunately has a bit too many bugs and since there is no "fast" walking, the traversal gets annoying very quickly. Short game, but double clicking an exit area to instantly switch would be better than waiting 60 seconds for a scene change.

Black the Fall

...is a 2,5D sidescrolling action adventure game, mixing some nice blac/white&grey environment design with annoying move and combat mechanics. Not extremely bad, but not particulary interesting either. This game has a lot of potential if they iron out the issues and add more interesting content eventually for the full release, but going by the current ingame content, its probably not worth it atm.

Claire
Very atmospheric 2D Horror game. I really liked they way they are using the horror elements and set up the story in this game. Definitely among the better games in the genre. I felt like they missed a bit of an opportunity by not using more animations for different situations as that sometimes took me out of the experience, but its a very carefully crafted game with a ambient sound work. This game definitely gets you in the mood, if you like these 2D Horror games, you should check this out.

Cubic Roll

Mechanically very simple, but incredibly challenging action/reaction based highscore game. The mechanics of changing the sides with the arrow keys works fine, and if you are into these small highscore games that get deviously fast, you'll like this.

DYNETZZLE
Smart little puzzle game about the all too well known dice nets. In this case, these dice nets even intertwine making you use the properties of a certain dice useful to determining the layout of another dice (a little bit reminiscent of how solving a certain Sudoku line might help you in a certain row). Surprisingly well thought out and fun, its just missing more variety in the kind of challenge the game could present to you. Still, definitely recommended, check out the free prototype if you like puzzley games.

Ender
Rather bland shmup, with boring progression and uninteresting enemy patterns and visually annoying explosion. Not much else to say really.

Error City Tourist

Rather pointless. A cool glitch skybox, an endless city with silent strangers, PCs with scrambled messages and a monorail which you can ride for all eternity. The end.

Freedom Planet
I havent played the full version yet, but based on the demo, this is basically the best Sonic clone game I ever played. I dont mean to use "clone" as a negative here, but it really is the same base mechanics. However, they work quite well too, great sense of speed, interesting level design, boss encounters, decent variety of enemies and challenges. If you like Sonic and you wont vall it a sacrilege for someone to copy the formula, you dont get around this one.

Glitch Dungeon
Cute little puzzle game which will have you learn several glitch powers, which are needed to progress through to the end. I sort of felt they didnt do enough with the theme on a mechanic level and there really could have been a more intriguing setup (full fleshed metroidvania anyone?), but I definitely enjoyed playing through it just now and overcoming the obstacles here.

Jazu
Cool concept, in which you basically only talk to people and figure out what they have to say based on the imagery shown. Unfortunately, there isnt much here either, its basically a micro story instead of a game, cute idea still though.

Metagolf

I am not particularly fond of this one. Instead of only being a classic golf game in 2D, they added a ton of action elements, which probably makes for a frantic golf MP session as everyone is constantly moving, trying to move their ball to the goal or being the one to first score the ball, but I dont think the action elements (spikes, jump&run courses) add anything to the concept of golf for me, this game really frustrates me more than anything else.

Lavapools
These guys are onto something here. Described as Modern hardcore Pacman, it actually fits that bill quite nicely. You move around, try to avoid danger and collect gems, and while doing so, the difficulty increases, enemies change their patterns, new enemies get added and so on. Its not quite as polished yet as it should be for a full release, but with a good amount of content, the full version could be quite interesting. Currently, its not going to light anyones world on fira in the alpha, and I do have some issues with the controls, but I guess the future depends on the devs and how much they'll be able to do with the concept.

Lexicopolis
While there are some better games this month, this is easily the biggest surprise I've played so far. The screenshot looks incredibly boring, and I wouldnt have given it another look if it werent for the fact that we included it here. This game concept is soooo good, it would be a shame if the dev wouldnt follow up on it with a proper release and leaderboards integration. The game is basically testing your inventiveness in coming up with town buildings, which you need to collect letters for by placing said buildings and the placement, rarity of the letters and position of the buildings itself, governs the amount of points each building gives you, accumulating into an overall value score of your city. You basically need to a) come up with buildings in a city (preferably the ones that you have the least of among the three categories of population, jobs and fun), which gives extra points , b) strategize your buildin placement to get access to the correct letters for the stuff you want to build, c) place buildings in a way that will give you the maximum amount of points. And its oh-so satisfying to come up with certain words to add to your city, see that they actually exist in the game, have their own graphic and give you a shit ton of points after placing them over a multiplier (I love my Pyramid and am going to build that in every city I make). The picture above is my first fully built city and my highscore for a small city. I really should make a thread about this and see if it catches on, please try the game yourself and let me know if you'd be interested in some GAF highscores. Inventive, addicting, fun.

Anyway, I've been looking through the OP again and I have to reiterate how good this month is. Crypt of the Necrodancer seems awesome from what I've played of it, I'm really into OlliOlli (couldn't wait till I got a Vita so I grabbed the PC version), Eidolon seems to be a great surprise, I've yet to check out Abyss Odyssey, Freedom Planet is fantastic, I really look forward to playing Lifeless Planet and Lovely Planet (planets!), Momodora III might be cool, Pivvot was fun on iOS, I also want to check out The Room and The Nightmare Cooperative, Wings of Saint Nazaire seems impressive, etc. etc. I'm sure there will be a fair share of surprises, as well, maybe starting with Lexicopolis? There's some other stuff that looks very intriguiging, so yeah..

Yeah, apparently rather rare-ish memory leak that makes the game crash upon loading the savegame, I am in contact with the dev who said he'll update me on the progress on that issue.

I'm sure there will be a fair share of surprises, as well, maybe starting with Lexicopolis?

I really need to bug the dev about making a full version of this.

Residue - $6.49, Free demo (PC)

http://www.theworkingparts.com/residue/

A project to save a devastated world, turned into a disaster of its own. A decade later, four people return to the desert that used to be the Aral Sea, each for his or her own reasons. In the form of a platform adventure game switching between characters with very different abilities, Residue tells the story of the people who tried to change everything, and how it ended up changing them

I'm actually one of the devs behind this game, sound designer to be more precise. So I guess you could call it a NeoGAF-related game to some degree (can't remember if we actually added a NeoGAF reference in the game though)! :)
Anyway, glad to finally being able to release it on Steam, can't believe it actually happened tbh. We've been working on the game on and off pretty much since we formed the studio (The Working Parts) 4+ years ago, at this point we've probably made two remakes of it. It was the first 'real' game I ever worked on, so it's really cool seeing it make it all the way onto Steam after all these years.
But it's also kind of frustrating because there are some things I really wanted to see improved that couldn't be done for various reasons (mostly time/resources related). But then, I have a tendency to be really critical of my own work. At some point, you just have to release it and move on.
Anyway, just wanted to give a bit of inside info about this game, sorry for the rambling. :)
