Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Timed I'm sure.

Yeah I can't see this staying exclusive forever.

Square: "The Tomb Raider reboot was a market failure."
-2 years Later-
Square: "Hey let's put Tomb Raider exclusively on the console that's only selling half as well as the other."

Then again, Square Enix isn't known for basing its decisions on...anything.

Do you guys really see this game as a console seller? I mean, I guess good for MS, but I dont think this exclusivity is going to do much for the XO.

It's a really odd game to pay for the exclusive. TR was a success but it sold better in PS3 and PC in Europe so MS must have had to write quite a large cheque.

I guess a 2016 release on PS4 won't really be a big deal, but one hopes that Square are getting a massive payday from this. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to keep a popular game off the more popular console in the region the game sells best, Europe.

Artificial Exclusives like this are in such a poor taste... I guess Squeenix isn't interested in my money. That's fine.

If it's anything like the other Xbox exclusives, it'll be on PC later. Not sure if it's been confirmed yet since I haven't read the thread yet.

So Tomb Raider will sell badly on purpose? I don't get it, since it was a multiplatform title for so long now. Is the money worth it to piss off your fanbase?

Microsoft giving them dumptrucks full of cash means it won't matter what it sells.

Expect a GOTY repackage 12 month after launch or something like that.

Luckily for PS4 and PC owners so they don't have to endure the gruelling experience of murdering waves of enemies with shitty contextualization thanks to shitty writing.
Oh shit uncharted 4 exclusive to Xbox as well!

Microsoft isn't holding anything back

Good move from a business perspective from Square. People forget that the original game, though recieved well, was considered a failure at the time by squeenix. If MS are going to guarantee a huge chunk of revenue for exclusivity, then it makes no difference to Square if the game doesn't do all that well.

All the risk is on MS shoulders here. If this doesn't shift consoles better than Titanfall then it's a massive waste of money.

They would have been paid for the estimated unsold PS4(PC?) copies as part of the deal.

This is MS opening the warchest.

Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past - we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we’ll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we’re going all out to try and make something truly special - the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.

Thanks,

Darrell Gallagher

It's a full exclusive, not timed.
That's right guys, it's not like you're missing anything :)
lol

You should've went "with shitty rationalization because Lara is a girl and girls are tough because they are girls and girls are tough now shoot some shit!!!"

It's disappointing to see NeoGAF revert to a level of discourse more suited to GameFAQs when faced with unpopular or unexpected news.

On-topic, The Tomb Raider reboot was a fantastic surprise when I played through it last year. I'm looking forward to what the developers can improve on and bring to the table for the sequel. I don't have an Xbox right now, but if the game turns out as well (or better!) as its predecessor, I'll definitely grab it if I find myself with an Xbox One in the future, or whenever a different version of the games makes its way to a platform I do own. :)

Well, that was surprising. Although it doesn't matter. Most likely, like many have said, is timed exclusive.

EDIT: so no timed exclusive.

It has zero chance of shifting consoles more than Titanfall.

Maybe they're going back to unrealistic teenage wet dream
big breasted
Lara in the hopes of pulling in those teenager console sales.

3rd party exclusives are lame. I'm not buying a console for this, which is a shame because I really enjoyed Tomb Raider PS4. Was looking forward to this one, now I won't get a chance to play it.

Boo to you, SquareEnix.

i really don't understand why square would cripple such a well known brand in a popular genre that they just poured tens of millions in to re-energize and re-position for a modern audience by making it exclusive to one platform

when they say not a timed exclusive, maybe they could have like a rise of the tomb raider definitive all dlc edition on ps4/pc later. i don't want to sound like i'm getting legit mad about the platform choice, i'm just confused by the business choice here.

Well, there you go. This is how Microsoft competes. They pay publishers good money to remove games from other platforms while in development.

That is really short-sighted of Squeenix, with xbone being a non-entity in most of Europe. I guess they don't have much faith in the selling potential of this thing if they'd rather have Microsoft's moneyhats. I wonder how do you have to pay to get a AAA franchise of this sort exclusive, even for a time, on a struggling console.

Money, it's there. This is why I'll never say Sony has this Gen in the bag, Microsoft is way too aggressive with this shit.

This is a fucking game that was announced as multi-platform wasn't it?

Insane.
