Launching in holiday 2015, exclusively on Xbox, featuring epic, high-octane action moments, “Rise of the Tomb Raider” will take gamers(...)

Can we also just take a moment to marvel at the sheer comma-ness of that sentence?

SE: 'The money was good y'all.'

Sad practices, but then again, this is undoubtedly a timed exclusive and frankly, not one I was really excited for.

As far as Microsoft buying up exclusives, it could have been far, far worse.

Nothing like waking up to disappointing news. Tomb Raider 2013 was my GOTY and the sequel will be missed.

I still won't buy an XB1, MS.

This is crap...

I have both systems, just so I can play exclusives, but there is no way I am buying this.

You have exclusives that are made in house.

You have exclusives, like the recent Sunset Overdrive, where the developer gets to keep control of their product, so staying on one system makes sense.

You have exclusives, like Bayonetta 2, where one of the big companies helps fund the game which would have never been made otherwise.

With all of these I have no problem buying the game and is the reason I own all the major systems.

Then you have crap like this where one company pays to keep the game off other systems. This is complete anti-consumer shit. This is not helping the gamer. This is not creating exciting content for your fans. This is not making me want to support your company by hiring the most talented artist in the industry and giving them a chance to wow me. This is 100% complete mafia bullshit of taking out all competition and leaving me one single choice.

fuck you I am not supporting this...

Pretty much how I feel. I have an Xbox One but this news is still disappointing and upsetting to me.

I can't believe people raging over a distant sequel for a mediocre game being X1 exclusive.
I agree, it was one of the most disappointing games in recent memory. That being said, shooters are really popular on GAF and I believe TR ranked really high in GOTY voting last year.

It will help feel Xbone owners to temporarily feel good for owning the console.

I own both systems so these things don't effect me, but I don't understand how this makes business sense for MS or SE. Tomb Raider is not a system seller, is it? Nor is it a direct competitor to Uncharted which is Sony's flagship title (ala Halo for Xbox). Strange move.

SQUARE JUST SHOT THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT

obv Uncharted vs Tomb Raider holiday sales battle

My pick is Uncharted, bigger install base. Probably will be a better game as well.

This is what I was saying in a previous thread. Sony gets exclusive advertisement of a game, with some extra content here and there and people equate that to what Microsoft does. We know it's coming eventually to the other consoles, yet Microsoft payed for them to not release it on the competing platforms.

If this is Microsoft's strategy, I don't think it will work. They need to strengthen their first party studios if they're serious about the video game industry.

I also don't think this will have a bigger impact than what Titanfall did earlier.

I guess that's true, but it's still a TR game.
Only in name.

I never played the first spin-off but it just seemed like a top down shooter. Not exactly what the classics were.
Then I suggest you play Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light. It actually has a large amount of puzzles and an actual exploration aspect to it, whereas Tomb Raider 2013 is the linear, braindead "cinematic experience" with nothing but shooting. One of the best co-op games around to this day too.

Basically, Microsoft is aggressively trying to “force me” to buy their console if I want to play a game that was once announced as being multiplatform and that they bought. It’s tactics, but cheap tactics.
I had a PS3 and a 360. I could not care less about brands. I could have bought an X1 for Sunset Overdrive, but, I won’t because I don’t like the strategy Microsoft is using. What was done by them with FFXIII going multi was clever and it didn’t lock down things, it opened the “game”.
This, is the other way around, it is a coercive measure.
So in a nutshell, if TR was announced from the start as an exclusive, I wouldn’t object, but seeing as it was first a multiplatform game, it bothers me. In the end I don't even think it helps them.
BUT, ultimately, I think that this is a timed exclusive :)

I have this image of Phil Spenser holding a gun to your head. It's videogames ...they can't force you to do anything. They're merely enticing you with something you want.

The only way to not play the salty exclusives game is to just own every console. It's easy, both consoles within one year of launch are only $800 USD. That's a steal compared to this time last generation.

But seriously, when was it definitively announced as multiplat?

The internet is full of hates. I am pretty sure if Rise of Tomb Raider is exclusive to PS4, the internet will be full of joys, happiness and trolls to Microsoft.

I wonder if they'll do some really neat TR XBO bundle. Lara Croft printed on the side or something- maybe I'll wait for that bundle.

It's a sad day for PC and PS4 fans though, really. That tumblr post was hilarious- "hey, y'all don't worry. You can have Temple of Osiris!"

Can someone explain to me why has this thread exploded to nearly 60 pages in a few hours?

What is so important/controversial about it? We've seen many developers reach some kind of exclusivity agreement with console manufacturers in the past - why is this one so controversial?

They know, but they do not want to say. Saying up front "this is a timed exclusive" would be like throwing money out the window for MS.
However due to the pressure they might actually admit it, which would be funny.

MS is a really stupid, clueless company if they did not realize what would moneyhatting this game cause (not an increase in Xbone sales!). Kinda like they were stupid to realize that Xbox One would get shorthanded as Xbone.

very true. did they actually believe we would all go crazy for this and start buying XB1s for a game that was, if you asked anyone, headed to all platforms?

All this salt lol gaf is the best

It's not just GAF. The majority of the fan base outside of GAF are going to be upset. Someone already posted the figures, but majority of TR sales came from Sony Platforms. I would say it's pretty reasonable for people to be upset when the majority of a fan base is being cut out from a series they already started.

Plus, I think a lot folks in this thread have been reasonable explaining why they think this is a bad practice (even X1 owners). So I don't get the whole "salt" comments. Comes off as petty/dismissive.

bullshit.

Destiny 1 year exclusive DLC spawned so much hate.

this kind of stuff is pretty much hated by everyone.

Man, fans were just sent down a river and impaled on debris.

It really is a shame because I was interested in where they were taking the series. Microsoft really want their own Uncharted it seems. I just can't even imagine how much money exchanged hands for this to be that appealing. I thought Tomb Raider 2013 and the Definitive Edition sold well on PlayStation platforms?

All that grinding for salvage in multiplayer...for NOTHING! :p

Erm... I guess you've been missing for all the Destiny exclusive DLC salt...

Key word DLC...not even a full game.

Wait, Forza Horizon, a spin off to the Forza series that came out in 2012 was created to be a direct competitor to DriveClub, a game that has yet to release?

That's some serious future planning right there, and I'd say it's working out for Xbox.

Well, based on the wording they are using, absolutely yes. 'Clubs', 'social integration', 'social racing game'. Oh And I meant Forza 2 of course!

"Money hat" means whatever people want it to mean to feel better about the company they go to war for. If a company gives a publisher money for exclusivity, I'm not sure why it make a difference if that money goes into development , or marketing, or publishing, or to help build the CEO a new vacation home in aspen, but people will argue back and forth over it as if one is more or less "noble" than the other to make Sony/ms/Nintendo/company of their choice look better.

You know Horizon 1 was Driveclub but MS stole it just like Tomb Raider so that set them back a few years im afraid

Tomb Raider was multiplatform franchise until now.

when is the last time you played the first game in a series on a platform. Then the sequel was not available to you?

a well known multiplatform series just went exclusive?

I'll see if I give it more attention there.

But those it have exploration too?

My dad was the Tomb Raider fan in the family but I'll show him to see if he likes it then.

The maps are pretty big with tons of secrets to find. I had an absolute blast with it. I'd never played a Tomb Raider game before, but it almost reminded me of 2D Zelda.

I don't think it's a complexity issue. Be assured that the language in whatever contract was signed is not as ambivalent. This is clearly semantical gymnastics on the part of Microsoft. It benefits them when people think this game is coming to no other platform. That's why they paid for timed exclusivity in the first place. But they can't be outright and honest about being able to play the game on other platforms in the future. Consider the phrasing of "first on console," "first on a console named Xbox," "Xbox exclusive for people who only own an Xbox." How many qualifiers are needed before it defeats the purpose? If you want to play a game today on the platform of your choice you likely will be able to unless the IP is owned by the platform holder, developed internally by the platform holder, and paid for and published by the platform holder.
