Empire Magazine's Greatest 100 games of all time [Reader Voted]

thelatestmodel

Junior, please.
There's like 20 games there that I would just toss out straight away for having no business in the Top 100.

Also, too many series have multiple entrants, and it's very predictable.

Not the best list I've seen.

Specific rankings aside, overall the list seems solid enough in representing old and new, different platforms, gaming history in general, etc.

I never played super Mario bros 3 until I was 18 or so and I loved it, games like that should be on the list, games like the walking dead is more of a interactive story and as much as I love it it doesn't deserve a place in best 100 let alone above silent hill 2.

What I mean is when a game is on a 100 list at least it should be playable today and not be put there due to nostalgia, as above SMB3 deserve to be on any top list because it is good if you played it in 1990 or 2014.

It's a list voted by Empire readers, of course it's going to be shit.

And yes, the list is shit.

The one bright spot on the list is not seeing Ocarina of Time in the first spot.

Anyone that is capable of being honest with themselves would admit the controls of games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are absolute balls these days.

Me and my friend tried playing multiplayer recently. It's nearly impossible to shoot the other person when it's 1v1 and you're even nearby. The controls are hot garbage, but every other aspect is still pretty incredible

Ocarina of time is about seventy places too high. I have love for that game, but it has never deserved such high placement on so many 'best games ever' lists.

On the plus side, I think a good case could be made for World of Warcraft being in the top ten.

I don't think TLOU at number one is all that much better IMO.

2. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time

I never understand this. Yes, LoZ:OOT It's an amazing game, one of the best of all time, but Majora's Mask is better in any way possible (IMHO).

Have you watched egoraptora video on OOT, looking back I think he nails it, plus I lean towards Majora's anyway.

looking back I'm not even sure how I played them. imagine a console fps nowadays with one analog stick.

I think you'll find not a single soul that will claim GE and PD controls have aged gracefully. And if so, then may God have mercy on their souls. But atmosphere, OST and level design are still great though.

I always find lists like these annoying. Whats the criteria? How do you even objectify if a game is better than one or another? All seems so silly if we're not talking specifically about 1 genre or a style of game, etc.

The criteria is a reader vote.

That's why a game like Super Metroid is at 94; not many people voting for this list would have played it. It doesn't matter that the game has impeccable atmosphere, controls, and level design, it's a SNES game released two decades ago that didn't sell much.

Goldeneye isn't a good game at all.

I genuinely believe that Goldeneye is only remembered so fondly because it was the first game to offer a decent multiplayer FPS experience with no network requirement. That, at the time, was huge. To be able to get friends round and have a 4-player LAN without the LAN.

It's not as good as everyone remembers. I mean, come on, Quake came out on PC a year before Goldeneye came out on N64, and it was a better game. It ran better, had better multiplayer, and better controls. Quake 2 PC came out only a few months after Goldeneye, and that was even better. I remember playing Quake 2 over LAN and with bots, and it was amazing. Way better than Goldeneye.

Cool list judging only what is there, rather than what is missing. Definitely would try playing all of them. Not entirely sure about the order. I think they have a better list thananu I've read.

That depends on what you think makes a great game (or in this case a great Zelda). Majora's Mask is without a doubt the most unique Zelda to date, if not one of the most unique games ever. But when I play Zelda, I largely play it for the dungeons, the puzzles and the great boss fights that come with it.

I'd say MM only has the NPC's/side quests and the living overworld that are better than OOT's counterparts (due to MM's excellent three-day cycle). But main story/dungeons wise I thought MM was seriously lacking. OST was good, but I preferred OOT's (though Song of Healing and Oath to Order were beautiful)

I'm actually ok with this list because they put Shenmue up there in the Top 10.
I don't think I've ever seen Shenmue on a best game ever list. Kudos to the Empire magazine readers.

I've been told it's been chosen by readers of the site, which actually would make sense. But if these are the actual opinions of the professional reviewers, then they've got quite some games wrong with the placing and some games aren't their at all.

TLOU will fade away . Just look at UC2 back in 2009/10 it was top 10 games of all time, game of the generation..blah blah. Now in this list its sitting at #22 on this list.

TLOU is a great game , but its not gonna be a consistent top 10 games of all time material anytime in the near future. Once we get some great titles this gen , you are gonna see these titles fall back a little.

Agreed, but they were some of the best controls when the games were first released.

I don't necessarily agree with the rankings 100% but the list is pretty solid/comprehensive. I may be in the minority, but the number 1 slot surprised me a bit. Before reading the list I expected Mario or something retro to top the list.

I actually prefer them to a lot of modern FPS because of the quality of their single player.

The controls and framerate are terrible, but the campaigns are still better than many current ones in shooters.
