Nexus 5 |OT|

Hey, guys. So I'm very tempted to pick up a Nexus 5 as I've been using the 5s for close to a year now and have the itch to jump back on Android with L approaching. Any rumblings of a Nexus 6 at all?

I think they usually appear in Q4, so maybe in a couple of months.

Can someone suggest a new camera app please? My stock one is having the worst time focusing

Wait it out. This would be the worst time to buy a phone (unless you wanted the S5 or G3). If there is going to be another Nexus, my bet would be on November for a reveal.

So, I downgraded my kitkat to 4.4.2 and it solved all my battery drain issues. Hurray. Shame I lost all of my data but worth it, lol.

I've just upgraded to a Nexus 5 from a nexus 4 and I'm a bit shocked at a the loss in cell reception. I went from 75dbm to 105 dbm inside my house. This is from the exact same stop, I just switched the sim between both phones.

Is that normal?

I've noticed poor reception as well since owning the nexus 5... I see my mobile data trigger on/off constantly.

I actually found out why. My previous phone, a Nexus 4 doesn't support LTE. Since it's enabled by default on a Nexus 5, it's what was used when I first booted it. My provider LTE coverage is not very good and switching the network preference to 3G gave me the same signal as my Nexus 4.

Hmm... You must be on Sprint like me.

Anything besides the hit or miss battery that you guys don't like about the Nexus 5? I'm thinking about recommending it to a friend on Sprint as she is eligible for upgrade.

There is absolutely no reason to recommend a Nexus 5 to someone until November. It would be a waste of their money if something is right over the horizon.

Not if the rumors are true and it's a new more expensive line of Nexus devices. At some point, the difference in performance/design might not be worth 50-75$ more.

(I might be trying to rationalize my current Nexus 5 since I broke my Nexus 4 screen) :|

They want a good deal and don't really care about the latest and greatest...

If a new Nexus device comes out, the resale value of the N5 would plummet. Just like it did with N4s and they were going for $150-200-ish tops after the N5 launched.

I just got a Foxtel Play trial (cable TV in Australia) and they have a decent app for mobile streaming of any channels you have in your package.

I've used it before, but never on my Nexus 5. Downloaded it last night and it just sits on the opening screen with a spinning circle, forever.

Did some Googling and it turns out the app doesn't support the ART runtime =\

Which is fine with me, I don't mind staying a year behind with my phone. I got my Nexus 4 when it went on sale and I'm still happy with it, although I'm working on trying to get a Nexus 5 (and it going on sale like the 4 did would be fine with me).

Is the N5 worth rooting? I've always rooted my pasts Android phones from the moment they came out of the box but haven't with my N5 yet. The battery life has been pretty mediocre so I was planning to root & install greenify, but wasn't sure if there were any real advantages past a few specific apps.

Kind of a bump of topic...

But anyone have any good resources on how I can go about rooting my Nexus 5? The main reason I want to is so I can put some screen capture software on there. I appreciate any help...Google gives me results, but I don't want to go to some bogus ass website and fuck up my phone.

There's a really good guide on XDA:
[GUIDE] Nexus 5 - How to Unlock Bootloader, Install Custom Recovery and Root

If there's something you don't understand you can probably find more info here.

A random question that now has come to mind... would rooting my Nexus 5 let me be able to use the USB connection in my car stereo instead of auxiliary? Know it's basic of the file format (I think..?), would rooting change that in some instances?

Don't think so.

Is there a way to get rid of the annoying "turning up your volume too loud may hurt your ears" message?

Checked the settings and there doesn't appear to be anything there. It sucks because even when the screen is off I can't turn up my volume past a point without clicking "OK" through the message.

On a Nexus 5? I've never seen that message.

I'm getting one of these next week as I switch to T-Mobile with the Unlimited everything plan. Having disposable income is awesooooooome.

It might just be the stereo itself.

I've got a Sony stereo in my truck and it'll only recognize apple devices, no matter what I do.

Yeah, I've figured that's just as likely a reason as well. Just miss the better quality I had always gotten out of my iPod with usb, instead of Aux with my phone now.

Even when your headphones are plugged in?

I get it with PowerAmp on my Nexus 5. Rather annoying as it's at about halfway, which is still rather quiet sometimes.

I think I used to get that message when I first got the phone, but not anymore...

Always using Google Music.

Nope. It happens once for every reboot of your phone. If you never reboot your phone you won't see it.

So... how likely is it that google will drop the price of the nexus 5 once the nexus 6 drops?
I don't think they dropped the price of the Nexus 4 when the Nexus 5 came out so I would say not very likely. But prices on Ebay and Swappa will go down of course.

They did before the 5 came out. I think.
