I think Mario Kart 8 proved it's entirely viable to base the series just on the Mario universe alone and still end up amazing. I'm not against the idea of Smash Kart but at the same time playing as Link is just a neat feature at best since it's only a cosmetic thing. But news of new tracks, whether they are F-Zero styled or not is very exciting, the course designs in 8 are delicious and in DLC form they can go over the top with the designs, much like how the map packs in NSMB 2 feature interesting level designs that you don't see in a mainline Mario game.

THIS TOOK ME A WHILE TO MAKE BUT I THINK IT ACCURATELY EXPRESSES MY EXCITEMENT

I guess after so many pages someone else would have said it too, but I wish Link were toon link with the Mario Kart character's shader. It would have fit so much more. I guess it would look somewhat like the Nendoroids:

But oh well..

People have been digging through the game files and there's only 16 slots for new tracks.

It's still unknown how many slots Nintendo has for characters, car parts, or a possible battle mode but in terms of race tracks 16 dlc seems to be it. There's also costume slots but I would guess that's tied to amiibo.

It wouldn't be too difficult to add more slots...

The way they discovered it was the fact that all of the tracks in the game currently available are listed as 17-48. The first 16 track listings were 'saved' and marked as for DLC, but that doesn't mean that future DLC couldn't be listed at 49 or beyond.

Not sure on the JPY pricing but I certainly would pay more than what it converts to from £!

It hasn't been said much here but the thing I am most looking forward to is more amazing music....that was seriously one of the best things about Mario Kart 8.

That would have been better.

I'm not that big a fan of Skyward Link's design.

Good. One more step closer to smash kart. I remember the last time a topic about such a subject was made in GAF and there were a bunch of people saying the art style of other Nintendo games wouldn't fit or that Nintendo shouldn't do it because somehow it'll devalue the other brands. Interested to see how those people are reacting to this.

I'm totally cool with extra DLC stuff like this that's a few months away, but I wouldn't want EAD to focus on making Mario Kart, Smash Kart in the next installment or in any other installment.
I personally prefer the focus and celebration of Mario's universe in these games. Plus Nintendo turning everything into Smash isn't necessary or a "smart move".

Edit: It's just cool for fans who'll buy any amount of cool fan service-y content they'll put out.
:p

Wow. This is the last push I needed to get MK8
If they're actually going to release new stuff for it so it wont get old them I'm in.

Totally looking forward to this. I how they release a standalone disk based version of it, like Super Luigi. I likely won't wait that long, though, lol.

Right. But there's a difference (I can reluctantly agree with) between being spoiled about unlockable characters in a game you bought/are going to buy, and being spoiled about additional DLC content. What would the alternative be? Charge people money for additional, undisclosed content? "Buy the mystery pack for $20!"

Yeah, that's pretty much me. I'd like to be surprised when I unlock secret things in a game, but DLC is a completely separate thing. The only way I could see someone being upset about a DLC leak (and this is a bit of a stretch) is if he or she was looking forward to a Nintendo Direct or some other event and didn't want that spoiled.

Because Nintendo announces big things in Directs or at least directly on their websites or in interviews... They don't 'announce' things via a single entry in their UK online store.

Maybe Nintendo doesn't think Mario Kart DLC is that big of a deal. We found out about the Mercedes stuff from the Mercedes site and commercial.

I think this is the perfect way, main game is based on Mario and Nintendo based tracks as DLC.

This I agree with heavily. Just prioritize the Mario franchise, but keep adding new guest appearances with each installment through paid DLC as fanservice. That'd be cool.

a throwaway cosmetic DLC vs a big substantial expansion like this?

Then again they announced Bayonetta 2 in a back alley in LA somewhere with a few curious onlookers with cameras in attendance.

People are underestimating how much work this is, never mind the characters, 8 tracks and 8 new music tracks isn't nothing. That's a pretty good job for 6 months actually.

Exactly. We are basically getting half a new Mario Kart in one year and at a fairly low price of admission. That is impressive all things considered.

I really like the fact that 8 tracks are included in each DLC (16 total !)
Also, this could means good news and hope for robust Smash 4 DLC.

I hope the next installment of Mario Kart includes characters, courses, and items from other Nintendo series right from the start. It's time for Nintendo to explore how to grow the Mario Kart universe.

If they are naming them Zelda x Mario Kart and Animal Crossing x Mario Kart...I wonder what the next crossover will be if any. Earthbound maybe. Characters fit the universe pretty well.

They'll probably relegate it to DLC like with MK8 (Kirby, Captain Falcon, Fox, Ness, Pikachu, Samus, Marth, MG&W, etc.). Hell, seeing as Nintendo's buddies with Sega, Namco, & Capcom, they could easily incorporate Sonic, Pac-Man, & Mega Man if they wanted to as DLC for future Mario Kart games.

How is this not the biggest news of the year? Nintendo answers the question of kart racers OUTSIDE of mario kart by saying yes and here is LINK! AND THEY ADD FZERO COURSE. omg. seriously. major news.
