I don't know, I feel it'll do quite a bit better than that, WW. Having the first game included helps a lot, IMHO.

I was exaggerating a bit, but I suspect it will still do awfully.

Like if you guessed 300-400K worldwide I don't think that'd be ridiculously low.

Bayonetta 1 shipped 1.1 million on two very popular systems that were a good match for its target audience and the sell-through there wasn't exactly phenomenal.

Since then the genre has continued to decline, it's on an off-target system with really low sales, and the developer hasn't been having breakout success either on the platform or in general.

I'd like for it to do better as I really loved Bayonetta, but I'm notably pessimistic on this one.

I don't think there's any way for it to do worse than W101. But I do agree. The original Bayonetta did fairly low numbers for an action game, the sequel's going to do worse.

Over 300k is absolutely not "fairly low numbers for an action game". What are you smoking?

Honestly, I was getting PS3 confused with PS2. And also not counting stuff like God of War and very low budget games, which I guess makes the statement kind of silly.

IIRC, those in hiska-kun's thread are just digital sales, with digital cards not counted.

Why on earth would a 3rd party developer make a game for PS4/WiiU when they sell like that. At this point making a Japan exclusive game is just stupid and outside of few titles support for those consoles will be bare bones . Home consoles are really dead in Japan.
PS4 can still use western sales to attract AAA stuff (as can Xbox One) but I wonder when we'll hit the tipping point there too? The biggest franchises like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest already dumped consoles for mainline entries outside MMOs (and even the MMOs are crossing over to handhelds and smartphones now), when will the next tier of games like FF, RE and MGS join them? I wonder what a transition from PS/Xbox to iOS/Android would look like for say FFXVI or XVII?

Yes, but it seems much less popular. Cards at the 7-11 nearby barely seemed touched compared to Fighters last time I was there, for example.

Oh, cool. Huh. I still hope we get these in NA. I see no reason not to.

What are W101's LTD so far for JP and WW? Do we have any idea?

There's no "tipping point" for everything honestly. FF, RE, and MGS will remain unaffected by Japan's decline for the most part because the series does better outside of Japan than in Japan. If they decline outside of Japan to a point where it's not longer worth making them, the franchises will more likely just fade away. Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest are what they are because they are insanely popular in Japan and not as popular anywhere else, so it makes sense to go all in on Japan, and follow whatever trends would keep them popular in Japan.

Xbox 360 sales are up. Rise of the Phoenix.

Sony needs to bring out the big guns for their September conference and TGS.

Yeah, the PS2 -> PS3 transition has not been kind to action games and racing games in Japan. :(

How did, say, DMC games perform compared to similar games in PS3 era? I honestly have no idea how the pre-05 japanese sales looked like for the most part.

It presumably depends on their Western sales, no?

Like MGS4 shipped 6 million copies worldwide, but only 1 million in Japan.

Even if Japan became zero sales, or even negative 1 million sales due to a rogue black hole, it would still make sense to make the game for consoles.

Similarly Resident Evil 6 has shipped 5.9 million copies, yet only 900K in Japan. Same situation applies.

Final Fantasy is a bit less cut and dry as the series is declining quite a bit in the West, though that also true locally, and generally only has 2/3rds of its sales abroad.

PS4 sales in japan... I am sad. this means less and less Japanese games on consoles. PS4 was the last hope. now it needs an almost a miracle to revive console there.

I hope TGS bring some good exclusive for the Japanese PS4. this needs monster hunter PS4 exclusive level to give it a chance of revival.

enough shooting games for the Japanese people. obviously they do not like it much

Question!

How come 99% of Western games get localized and physically released in Japan despite the piss poor software sales the majority of them receive?

(yet some big Japanese games never seen the light of day over here)

DMC is a shaky franchise. It started off >500k, dropped to >400k with the second game, and the bad reception to the sequel dropped the third game to ~300k. Which is about where it was with DMC4 too. DmC did <200k.

The high point for character action in Japan was probably Onimusha, with the first two game being ~1 million titles, although it started declining after that too, with the third game doing >500k, and the fourth game selling ~300k.

~300k is definitely the current average bar for success for such games in Japan now. Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising are both in that league.

20./09. [3DS] Senran Kagura 2: Crimson # <ACT> (Marvelous AQL) {2014.08.07} (¥6.998) - 2.902 / 60.610 <60-80%> (-72%)

People will soon be able to pick up Senran Kagura 2: Crimson from the bomba bin of their local video game retailers. In 2 weeks it will be selling less than 1.000 units and there are about 35.000 - 40.000 units on shelves.

If 3rd party developers were making games for PS4/WiiU they wouldn't be selling like that.

This whole "let's wait until they have enough of a user base" has doomed consoles in Japan. They'll never get to critical mass, but we'll never know if it's because people just don't want consoles, or people don't want consoles with no games.

Not sure why there is so much pessimism about Bayonetta 2. The character has gotten a lot more exposure since its debut, and there is zero competition at the time of its release. It should hit 200k fairly quickly.

TBH, the PS4 is selling as it should. There's only 2 big Japanese games and they're both cross-gen. It needs exclusives for the Japanese audience to really see how well it can do in the current JP market. Hopefully we see a few of those games at Sony's Sep 1 conference and TGS.

The Wii U's performance is a bit worrying though. It had several strong selling Japanese exclusives over the last few months. There were a few decent bumps, but now it's back to sub 10k.

Will this happen to the PS4 as well when those games come?

It's in the high-end for second week's Musou drops, but it was also a week right after an Holiday, which probably had an effect, seeing how everything dropped. Can we say it had a decent second week?

Having zero competition also means having zero fanbase for that sort of game.

Well, Final Fantasy should be around 5 million sales worldwide even if sales drop to 750-800k sales in Japan.

For MGS I wouldn't expect TPP to sell less that Ground Zeroes. If it doesn't surpass it thing would be really weird though.

100k? I would be happy with 50k. As for Bayonetta, by some miracle I hope it hits 200k.

Didn't Fatal Frame 4 became the best selling in the franchise at 75k sales? For the WiiU 50k sounds nice and would probably reach TK expectations.

You are never pessimist enough when it comes to something comercially related to Wii U.

Hahaha, the only chance this game has at 200k is if Nintendo starts bundling it. Speaking of which, I would love a Platinum bundle of 101 and Bayonetta. I really don't understand why Nintendo doesn't do more console bundles outside of their big properties anymore.

I dunno if anything really happened or if the fans really "went" anywhere. It could just be a bubble which no longer exists. Winning Eleven games used to sell over a million copies on Japan consistently. What happened? Where did the fans go? Football is still super popular in Japan, so it's not like interest in the sport went down. A large amount of the audience just felt that they no longer needed to buy a football game every year I guess. It happens. For a lot of people gaming is not a huge part of their lives and they just do it if lots of other people are doing it too. When interest dies down and it's no longer topical, they're out.

Derby Stallion used to sell gangbusters on the PS1 too, even on the PS2 it managed to sell over 600k. What happened to the series? Shrug. Pachislot games did really well for a time on consoles too. Now they're mostly sub 100k for popular licenses, and most don't even chart. Another example of things which used to sell when videogames were the hottest things ever. That time is past.

I can definitely see some "home-console" series (or better, "home-series" main chapters) coming to handhelds as well (i.e. PS4 and handhelds, not exclusively to one or to the other): mainly, Japanese focused ones, but I could see also 1-2 of those with a more international range becoming home and handheld releases, in order to sell better in Japan: I mean, if PS4 stays like this and there will be so few releases that peaks will be sporadic and non continuous, I fear its situation won't improve that much, thus bigger series, even the "international" ones, will suffer in Japan.

Still, if everything goes on like this, so it's an extreme scenario, something that could happen, but could perfectly not happen with a sudden change: we'll have to wait and see.

looking at Bullet Girl result, maybe Marvelous will realize they made SK2 on the wrong platform

Well 3DS as such was correct platform as they cannot abandom userbase who bought SK 1/Burst - what was mistake is not making it multiplatform to capitalise on SV buyers.

They've already tried "going portable" with FF, RE, and MGS, and the outcome in all those cases was "Fuck, shit, we need to triple down on AAA console instead for the West!", so no, I don't think they're going back to that anytime soon. Japan isn't enough for these franchises. Not when there are millions of sales to be made in the West instead.

Comgnet stores pre-orders 24 days before the launch:

[PS3] Bayonetta - 85
[WIU] Bayonetta 2 - less than 20

Next month is gonna be filled with bombas:

WIU Fatal Frame V
WIU Bayonetta 2
PS3+360 Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2
PS4 Omega Quintet
PS4 nth Musou/Warriors re-release

Good thing the Xbox One is looking to sell greatly and breathe life into the console market.

SCEJ isn't the publisher. :p

Who is? What are they doing?

EDIT: so Mojang doesn't have one.......yeah I'm putting this on SCEJ since SCE was the pub for the western release right? I doubt other pubs are going to look into it but they should because there is money to be made.
