Media Create Sales: Week 34, 2014 (Aug 18 - Aug 24)

In a MC/Famitsu topic I'd say that it is pretty normal to "list" the meaningful release, ins't it?



Well, everything left the Wii U, so...for 3DS I'm a bit surprised, also because the game sold devently on 3DS (looking at the results on other platforms), so maybe it was more a "asset/tool" decision? If the port could have been easier probably they could have proposed also the 3DS version. Or maybe not, I don't know.

My guesses:

RE R sold pretty badly for an RE spin off on 3DS. Capcom are aiming for the console audience since that is where the RE fanbase is and so the game is probably too powerful for any 3DS to handle.

WiiU is no surprise.

It's not like RE:R 3DS was an amazing success that grew the fanbase and now they are going to lose a significant amount of sales for not having the sequel on the system.
It sold well for a RE spinoff in Japan, but if they are developing the sequel as a multiplatform game (on five platforms) it makes sense to target higher end of specs and don't bother making an effort to port the game to the 3DS.

The Resident Evil userbase in Japan owns a PS3 already.

But I can agree that Resident Evil Revelations 2 missing 3DS probably isn't that big a deal for the game.

so, basically both Sony and Nintendo had their "TGS" conference. We could absolutely get more crucial info from third parties during the fair, but still:

1) Who you think just had the best event overall for its business?
2) Which console will probably benefit the more of the new announcement?
3) Do you think that we could see a change of pace/structure for the Japanese market, that seems so far very oriented into mobile and in second place into portable consoles (with the home segment that struggles)?
4) Which is the best single-annoucement hw/sw wise?

Talking about Japan since this conference is Japan specific and the new announcement basically irrelevant outside of Japan.

The most appalling thing was that during the conference Sony in many cases tried to fool the audience into thinking the games were PS4 exclusives. In general the cross-gen strategy isn´t great but obviously the only way to get PS4 support. The target audience will be nearly the same due to a large overlap between Sonys ecosystem, software sales will mostly just be splitted between more systems than before and therefore the amount of royalties could basically remain the same, depending if there are any incentives maybe even less. It will help selling systems but this strategy already just lead to mediocre results on PSV. The only really promising announcement was DQH but later we knew it was just a cross-gen title.

Talking about PSV, it´s actually ironic that while in the beginning the system was actually the one to benefit the most from this cross-gen stuff (PS3 beeing an old system while PSV the new toy for a while surely wasn´t detrimental), right now its lineup is actually losing some strength due to beeing multi with the new toy. First Tearaway for PS4 a few weeks ago and now games like Senran Kagura Estival, Ys and God Eater are on PS4 as well.

In general the PSV was really neglected in the conference, no noteworthy exclusive content, absolutely no reaction to its competitor and the sure-bets like another update of a Monster Hunter clone etc. even weakend due to ports to a newer shinier Sony system. Not really a great move since it actually is there top system right now and most likely also next year. Basically it seems like they threw the PSV under the bus in favour of PS4, with very little guarantee of actually beeing worth it in Japan. It´s unfortunate because if PSV gets even weaker in its sole lifesupporting market it won´t be pretty.

Don't try and understand it, just go with it.

This is a sales thread, so we are talking about potential sales and it looks like there a nearly no heavy hitters on Vita. Please take note, i wrote nearly not nothing ;)

But we know Vita don´t need them to be semi successful.

It's amazing how much this actually works. Two of my friends have said several times that they might get a PS4 for LBP3. They have no idea it's also on PS3 >.>

Well, there's a reason companies continue to do this.

Sony will sell so, so, so many PS4s this month just on Destiny alone, which is not only cross-gen, it's not even exclusive.

The power of marketing.

True. But do they care about Revelations formula? 3DS version sold around 300k; PS3 version around 200k. PS3 already showed how late portings could even outsell original versions (e.g. Tales of, Samurai Warriors), but it did not happen that time (Operation Raccoon City sold close to 300k instead).

Oh, I agree. But looking at how much the game sold on 3DS VS other platfroms, probably IF the port would have been easier, they could have tried it. Probably, developing for cross-gen, the 3DS could have needed too much of a rework in terms of programming. Otherwise I can't see them dropping it so easily considering the previous sales.

I agree that somehow Vita is weaker for the PS4 multiplatform announcement; this is the downside of the "ecosystem" concept we were talking about.
Let's say that it seems that Sony is trying to sustain the diversity between Japanese and Western markets trying to offer a unique "landscape" (for prgrammers and customers) accessible through various "form factors" (aka different platforms).

You know, this makes me realise Nintendo pretty much never do/get cross-gen games. Generally, ports go from console > handheld, but never cross-gen.

The only example I can think of is Twilight Princess, and that's probably only because architecture is pretty much the same between the GC and the Wii.

Nintendo tends to just switch everything to next-gen (or stick to old-gen, like they did with Pokémon Black 2... so in that case, I believe it was more them needing one last DS games because Game Freak was obviously not prepared for full 3D Pokémon on 3DS). And 3rd-party publishers aen't doing those either (then again, it IS a pretty recent phenomenom...).

Well, yeah, PS3, PS4 and Vita seem to be all part of a "family" of devices in Japan, receiving games that they share, but it doesn't still seem a complete "ecosystem". In the sense, retail games aren't a part of cross-buy initiatives, not even in one sense (like it was in late 2012 here in the West): you can't buy it on Vita and then, for free / for a little fee, you can play it on PS3/PS4 and you can't buy it on PS3/PS4 getting the Vita version for free (included in the price, higher than getting the Vita version). Also, the devices still fell "separated" and not being a "family" (for example, talking about sales, we deal with PS4, Vita, PS3, not with all of them being considered as a unique platform with several form factors).

That's why it's going to be interesting to see the NintendOS' approach implemented in next gen systems: while it shares features with the PS3/PS4/Vita multiplatformism, it sounds like it could be something even deeper, between NNID becoming the actual platform, device-agnostic and awarding most loyal customers. Something far nearer to Apple compared to what Sony's doing.

we saw with Skylander and Infinity that the interactive toys segment could be very interestig and profitable.
I thknk that Skylander launched in Japan, but with not-so-great numbers. This is probably due to the western soul of the project itself, isn't it?
Did Inifnity launched in Japan? Because I think that Disney is pretty popular over there too!
What do you think aboout amiibo? It is pretty clear that Ninetndo mascotes are popular in Japan, and the lack of a proper competition (unlike the West) could be a good thing for amiibos, but I also think that Nintendo is missing an opportunity to not build a proper dedicated software around those figures (a Skylander-like Mushroom Kingdom Hearts for 3DS would be a perfect fit probably),

I still do not understand completely what the figures really do. Like much of what Nintendo is doing these days, their NFC solution seems confusing and convoluted.

I agree. I think that Smash is a good way to introduce various IPs under the same umbrella "in time" (probably a dedicated software IS in development but still not ready), and the concept of a figurine being useful in various games is good (it adds value to the single statue), but up to now they are missing the unique cohesive title that could communicate the concept easily

I liked how mostly everything announced at today's show has a targeted period that clearly states 2015, as opposed to announcements with no dates, which are the goddamn worst. (MinnaGolf has no date, Sony pls)

Well, Iwata used Apple's iOS and Google's Android as examples of how Nintendo consoles' relationships between each other should be. At least, in terms of filosophy behind the whole concept. Of course, the execution for next systems has yet to be seen, and we won't see it for quite some time, unfortunately. That's certainly the major concern in order to see if it'll work / it'll fail.

Thoughts re: Sony's conference

This seals the fate of the Vita as the new saturn. It will top at 5-6M at best.
At this point, if Sony were investing on Vita in Japan, this would be the conference were bigger games would be announced and other games like DQ:W would be coming to the system (it's a musou game with a PS3 version, it can't get easier than that).

Also I think PS4 will be fine. It's getting all the big franchises, even if not exclusively and, in the end, the userbase will move there.
 
Completely forgot FFE. Let's see if the japanese will follow suit.

Sad because FF Hunter had potential, but not under a mobile sized budget. I believe it's also been rushed for a holiday release and we know how content is important for hunting games.

Will be interesting to watch.

You seem to have some inder info regarding FFE, care to share it?

About FFE, I really got no idea how it'll perform. It's got the FF name, but that doesn't mean success is guaranteed... especially since it'll be quite busy in December.

All you have to do is look at it. Plus, the game is a FFXII clone, not a proper action hunting game.

I'm just saying it won't live up to its potential.

I basically agree, but I think the userbase that will make the move is even smaller this time around.

Sounds about right, though along with the userbase I think the overall software ecosystem will shrink as well.
