Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

Did you know that there is not a single rotating object/sprite in SMB1-3?

What are you actually determining as 'rotating' here? Fireballs are *represented* as rotating. Only with a four-frame animation, admittedly, but the animation *is* pretty sound.

If you mean actual direct sprite rotation, then, well, yes? I don't think that was within the NES's capability, so expecting Mode 7-esque rotation would be somewhat demanding.

Fireballs and hammers in SMB.1 have different sprites for rotation as far as I can tell (even if they're not separate sprites, it would be easy enough to do 90 degree rotation in real time by simply changing the order which pixels are drawn, much like how sprites tend to be flipped.)

I totally forgot about the Fireballs and Hammers! Sorry my bad.
Oh and yes, frame animation count as rotation for me, since the NES didn't had the Hardware.

Haven't found something like this yet, a nice little fun fact:
Remember the chuchus and the strange sound they do in Wind Waker?
wind-waker-wind-wakeryok9v.jpg

Turns out the sound is two japanese man arguing, sped up several times and played in reverse.
Article with comparison audio

I can't believe that it wasn't actually posted here by now.

You know Midna, from Twilight Princess?
midnauuukc.png

Everybody thought that Midna speaks some gibberish that just sounds vaguely similar to English. Turns out it is actually English, just scrambled and chopped.

Listen for the unscrambled voice clips here

I love stuff like this! Nintendo's audio engineers are so sneaky. :)

This is probably obvious to some, but having just finished a replay of Ocarina of Time on 3DS, something surprised me.

You know in the ending, during the party in Lon Lon Ranch, King Zora and Mido are sitting together away from everybody else. I always thought this was done for comedic effect, due to their size difference, but this time I realized that these two are the ones whose loved ones became sages, and they are probably mourning their departure.

Note: I realize that Darunia's son is also connected to the sages, but he is more likely to view his father as a great hero due to Goron culture and thus would be less likely to mourn. In contrast, Mido lost the girl he loved, and King Zora lost his daughter.

Is it confirmed that Sages die? I read the page in the Zelda Wiki and never saw any sort of confirmation that death = sage-dom.

It's not clear, but even if they lived, they can't exactly go back to their old life. Got to protect the world and the seal on the Evil Realm. In Wind Waker, it was stated that the sages had to pray in the temples to maintain the seals.

Right, but I also don't recall them having to constantly stay in the Light Temple and pray, especially after Ganondorf was already sealed. The only Sages who were confirmed to have to stay in one place were the ones in the Earth/Wind Temples in Wind Waker, but that was only for the Master Sword.

Just finished this myself again the other day and thought exactly the same thing. Poor guys!

Discovered some fun stuff in Sine Mora and I"ve just got to share it!

(Disclaimer: if you're Hungarian, or are familiar with Hungarian culture, this will not be a great discovery and will be trivial, but if you're not, you're in for some fun!)

I bought Sine Mora about seven months ago and really enjoyed it.

And there were a few things I didn't quite understand. One was why, when you clear a stage and :time is stabilized", the 6:00 position in the clock that displays would be labeled with a "4", as in this screenshot:

14871402063_b58603d89a_o.png

And I couldn't figure out how to read the letters that look like Norse runes or futhark which are all over the place in this game, particularly in the imperial capital of Tira.

sine-mora-city-lights.jpg

(I didn't take this shot; it's much more detailed than I could get on my Vita, and is perfectly positioned for what we're about to do.)

Or maybe the runes devised by J. R. R. Tolkien. But if you read the letters as futhark, they don't spell anything. If you read them as J. R. R. Tolkien's runes, they don't spell anything either. Some of them look like mirrored characters, but even that doesn't help.

But there's another system of rune-like characters which I had never heard of until I started poking around the internet: Hungarian rovásirás runes. Supposedly it's a coincidence that their forms look so much like those of Northern Europe; they actually came in from Turkic languages in ancient times. They look like this:

hunrune.jpg

These are the ones that are used all through this game. Not surprising, given that the producers are Hungarian!

Look at that picture of Tira again and you should see a big red fish on the left. Written on it, from right to left in rovásirás, is "HAL", Hungarian for fish! To the right of that, next to the red smiley face, is JATEK, which means "games". Over on the right, below the woman in pink, it says "SUPER MILLION HAIR", so I guess that's an ad for shampoo or hairspray or something.

Let's move and and see what else we can see:

14664308680_6749bbb3d5_o.jpg

There's the JATEK sign again, and next to it, with a logo that looks suspiciously like that of Coca-Cola, we see "SZODA". Hungarian sz is pronounced like English s, so it's soda they're advertising!

14664371289_f946aaeb95_o.jpg

This one has three instances of the word BOGI in yellow; I can't figure out what that means, but the light blue sign at the top right reveals that that building is a BANK.

14850994375_0ecb79ea53_o.jpg

Here we can see an advertising sign that spells out BLACK KNIGHT SWORD... and it's an image from another Digital Reality game, with that name! Above that is a sign for CITY GRILL. Both of these are just English transliterated into rovásirás.

14848546434_858e267821_o.jpg

At the end of the stage, we're in front of BAR KUKON, and over to the left, written vertically, we see FERI, which is a nickname for the very common name Ferenc -- one of the producers!

14664400088_ecc0ecdbf6_o.jpg

The boss Papa Carlo has RABA written on its body. This is the name of an automotive company in Györ, but that could be coincidental. And what are those X's and lines on the front?

Well, it turns out that Hungarian rovásirás has its own number system, which works just about the same way that Roman numerals do, but it's written from right to left like the letters are:

runove-cisla.png

So that's a 36 or 37 (not sure if it's IIVXXX or IVXXX on Papa Carlo). And we can now see that the "IV" on the clock in the 6:00 position is not a mistake at all, but is in fact just written in the correct Hungarian direction. It's the XII at the top that's wrong! (Look very carefully next time you clear a stage and you might even be able to make out IIIIX, "9", in the 9:00 spot. It's hard to see, but it's there.)

There are a few more instances of this writing, some of it too small to see (I want to know what it says on those spiraling walls in Siriad, and on the killer
piano
).

Now I'm fascinated by Hungarian runes and want to learn all about them. Seems that Hungarians are still using them. Check out this street sign!

DSC08122.jpg

I suppose every Hungarian fan of Sine Mora picked this up right away, but for those of us who were uninitiated, this is a great easter egg!

Yeh this was always obvious to me, particularly because (if I remember right) the music takes quite a sad turn when they are focused on. I never thought it was for comedic effect.

Mido is a great character. He's such a butt when you first meet him, but if you ever found him in the Lost Woods as an adult, he says if you ever see "Link" to tell him he's sorry for being such a butt. That coupled with the ending always made me feel sad for him.

Mind-blowing? Nah. Good eye for nice little details? Definitely. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, if you're Hungarian, you probably noticed this in a few seconds. I had never heard of rovásirás runes before, though, and was assuming that they were made-up until the truth became clear.

Didn't Gravity Rush do something similar?

Gravity Rush went far beyond this, making up its own alphabet and then abbreviating the words in such a way that we players would not be able to figure out what was going on. I loved they way they did it in that game, but I like how this game made use of a real script that's almost unknown to outsiders and is a real piece of Hungarian history. Every game set in a fictional world should do this kind of thing!

Pikmin has a windows executable on the disc which plays a very glitchy debug version of the game. So I guess you can say Pikmin is the only first party game you can "play" on PC outside of emulation.

You want to know why Ocarina of Time is on a golden cart. NOA misinterpreted a question IGN posed to them. Howard Lincon thought he was asked if the game was going to go gold to which he responded yes. The question was actually about if it would be on a gold cart. Media kept the pressure on (magazine covers and images showing gold carts).

A recent Nintendo voice chat episode (25th July 2014) clarified this. Another interesting titbit was that Backbone had made a fully working VC Arcade (Mario Bros, DK 1-3) emulator on Wii which included DS connectivity (if would even copy over the savestate) which they showed to Nintendo. Owing to rights issues regarding the arcade versions of those games it could never be released.

Another thing Backbone worked on for Nintendo was Gauntlet DS. Nintendo were looking for a PSP killer game so wanted something that could rival PSP so include VOIP chat and other features. Nintendo had no need for the project once it was clear the DS was slaughtering the PSP so let the game find a new home. The game went to Edios who officially announced it and had to cancel it right before release (they sent out review copies).

One final bit is the source code of Resident Evil (PS1) has parts of Goof Troop (SNES) source code in it.

The Japanese version of Chrono Trigger has an art screen removed from the USA version in one of the endings. It is in the regular ending if Crono is dead and if you crashed the Epoch.

I don't know about the PS version, but a higher quality version of the image was restored in the USA for the DS vesion.

Here's the art screen from the Japanese Super Famicom version:

This game was completely done and the ROM has been dumped, you could even play online before Nintendo killed the WFC.

Not really big but I remember I mentioned it once in another thread and some people were shocked that Quistis Trepe from Final Fantasy VIII wears pants underneath her skirt.

According to Chrono Trigger ROM hackers, it's possible that it was not actually removed from the USA version; rather, it may have been inserted in the Japanese version after localization work on the USA version began.

All of these facts blew my mind.

That Gauntlet DS fact hurts though because it shows that Nintendo were willing to compete in online features until they realized they didn't have to and got lazy.

Not sure if this has been posted, but you can destroy the bombable walls in Link to the Past with the pegasus boots. http://youtu.be/z3CXQ23qvek?t=2m6s

Has anyone tried to do this in Link Between Worlds to see if it still works?
To my recollection, the Pegasus dash only worked on bombable walls distinguished by having extra cracks compared to regular bombable walls, and they were incredibly few in number.

First thing I tried when I got the boots in LBW was try and dash an obviously bombable wall, but no dice. I stopped trying after that, so there may have been some it worked on.

Hyperbolic response to this:

Though it's pretty interesting in and of itself.

i am fucking crying D:

Speaking of Backbone. Wiki says they have not released a game since 2012. Wonder what they are doing.

edit.

More googling says they had layoffs at the end of 2012 and they have gone dark since but I dont see anything about any closure. Maybe they just faded away like Incognito after Warhawk.

Double edit.

More googling says after the mass layoffs they wanted to try run the company with much less staff. Thats pretty much the last official line from the company.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=494899

I guess that didn't work out because I see zero official web presence for Backbone now. Website is down and no twitter / FB pages.

That kind of sucks.

I hope Bluepoint is ok. I havent heard from them in a while either.

MORE EDITS

Bluepoint ported Titanfall to the 360? Good for them!

Devil May Cry 1 isn't the only game in the series to screw up a name completely in the translation.

DMC1 famously screwed up naming Vergils DT form as Nelo Angelo (which is nonsense) instead of Nero Angelo (which means black angel)

DMC4 screwed up the translation of this big bad mother fucker

Berial was meant to be Belial, an actual demons name, mean while Berial is just a made up name. This would go better considering how most of the other enemies in the game are named after demons, like mephisto or Baal.

Wario actually debuted three years before Super Mario Land on the TV show:

Source.

OMG. For real?

Fake Edit:

Upon further reading, here are a couple of articles:

www.mariowiki.com/Wario

http://web.archive.org/web/20080603115614/http://www.*****.com/article.php?artid=10570

Related reading:

Based on the above I'm not 100% sure that's supposed to be Wario in the cartoon per se, more that after SML2, they may have decided to pattern Wario after that similar character in the show (although I don't know if the character in the show was given any defining traits or personality, or name). I'm not sure if Wario was designed with his current color scheme when he appeared as the villain in SML2. The articles above indicate he was an R&D1 creation, though, and that the original inspiration may have appeared in Wrecking Crew, all the way back in 1985.

I'm pretty sure it's just a color palette choice that just happens to be the one they ended up using later. Because yellow and purple are complimentary so it made sense to later use them.

I remember seeing him too when I got my DVDs. But I'm sure it's all just coincidence.

And yes, Wario had the same color scheme in Mario Land 2. It was in the commercial for the game. Yellow with purple.

This is prob more of an easter egg but i was playing anachronox for the first time last night and i went to the back storage room at the start of the game and saw a cd laying there. I did a double take because i could tell the cd was a really low res scan of one of my favorite albums.
