Tier 2 Xbox One launch: retail stories

Picked up my pre-order this morning in Holland. Also asked the clerk for a PS4-stand and camera clip for the PSCamera, because my home set-up needed some re-arranging.

I've never seen a clerk so flabbergasted in my life ;)

He also asked: "Do you want any games with the system or an extra controller?"

I replied: "no I'm good. But I do want to pre-order that white DS4 that comes out next week if you don't mind."

I think I blew his mind at that point.

"Don't worry," I said, "this is my Halo machine."

Yeah, we get what he's saying, but you think developers won't become more familiar with the PS4 as time goes on or that the dev tools won't be enhanced? What he said doesn't make sense.

Yes they will, though the multiplatform difference will be tiny, hardly noticeable certainly less then the ps3, because the metro redux guys have said that the xbox1 has been using basicly a dx11 api which has less performance then the more to the metal ps4 api.

Also if the ps4 has an extra 500gflops just there why are we not seeing it being used in games like destiny and diablo 3?

Once devs are fully using the to the metal api I think parity will be commonplace.graphics alone this gen is a silly reason to buy a console when the differences are the smallest they have been in any generation for the past 15 years.

Aw what sweethearts.

Somehow I doubt that ...

Of course they will sell some units and will probably also have fulfulled several preorders but I honstly cannot see 1 Mio. units sold when many store already had the X1 in store (imported with slightly higher price).

My (hopeful) guess is max. 500.000

I don't think they'll hit a million either, but I'm saying that's kind of like the minimum threshold for bragging about it.

Threads about the noise issues are now popping up on Reddit too. I hope this forces MS to acknowledge a problem. There are stores claiming that every unit they received has the problem.

The differences in this gen is was bigger than in earlier gens

You really do not know what are you talking about.

Because those games are last-gen games?

The difference will be the biggest.

Gif is not fake. The PS4 only has three points of contact when placed horizontal.
I tried in all the ways possible... PS4 didn't to that like the gif... I can make videos it stay flat and solid on table.

The only way to that gif don't be fake is if the table itself is not flat.

I haven't seen this gif but my ps4 will woble a bit if you press down on one side when its horizontal.

Did I just travel back in time pre-next gen launch?

You're right, PS4 doesn't have 500glops more after all.

Isn't that gif from GiantBomb? I mean I'm not their biggest fan but aren't they the least biased gaming media out there? I doubt it's fake and I doubt they would use a non-flat table for their test.

As a retail guy, do you have figures on return rates due to faults on all consoles at your store?

I worked in Best Buy at the launch of the 360 and PS3, and now again, for the XB1/PS4. This has been a much more low-key launch in terms of returns/issues, honestly. A few launch issues for both consoles, some faulty stuff, but nothing on the scale of a serious concern. Certainly no Red-Ring concerns thus far.

Why do people push on the left side of their console in a horizontal position?

You wouldnt, but its something people noticed when the PS4 launched. Many here commented about it also during launch. Seems strange they would design it like this.

sad to see that customers are not treating the systems equally.

ps3 sold shitty in the beginning but outsold the xbox so easily.

the ps3 was already at the beginning doing quite well in germany, while the first multiplatform titles were so much shittier back then(remember ridge racer6+7, bioshock, loading time issues and the resolution)

now it should be equal because non of the systems have exclusive titles worth to be bought, but the ps4 already outsold the x1. for me, it doesnt seem to be a cheerful gen, this time.

the japanese launch yesterday was a pretty sad one. more employees than customers at the launch-party. what was that? a flash mob NOT to show up on that launch?

What does this even mean?

Are you actually sad that a Microsoft console launch bombed in Japan? Did you miss the entire last decade?

I will never understand the emotional attachment to the console war.

This looks like it was taken from the pre-launch specs threads. Wow. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm not stating this as a fact but merely my opinion. I'm not familiar with what the ICE team is doing with Sony. If they are working to improve their dev tools then I stand corrected.

Jesus, what's up with the "tales from my ass" opinions?

Can I just start saying ridiculous things with limited knowledge and fall back on "Well it's only my horribly uninformed opinion!"?

Please, explain logically why Sony would halt and slowdown their dev tools when compared to Microsoft when they have a whole team in Naughty Dog who is dedicated to developing and improving these development tools.

Microsoft made this deal for Xbox and Windows and their devices. That's why everyone is carrying around a surface during football matches. Also, what's the deal with everyone bringing this up? The NFL partnership is all about mindshare. Millions of viewers watch american football. They will all see Microsoft products while they watch, which is a huge win for them.

Because Microsoft marketed it at the E3 press conference if I remember correctly, mainly talking about the XB1 and smartglass stuff with Kinect.

Oh please. Customers don't need to "treat them equally." They're not people, they're products. Sony didn't treat their customers like morons so they're being rewarded for it with sales. Simple as that. If Microsoft wanted people to buy their product then perhaps they should have focused on gamers from the beginning and built a system with a better value proposition.

I tried to simulate what the vídeo shows.

No. It is impossible.

PS. I just can guess these console have a issue like missiono one of the three points or the table not being flat.

Edit - I'm starting to go off topic here... sorry :(

Is there already a thread about all kinectless xbones being noisy after applying the june update?
This appears to happen to ppl living in countries with 50 Hz electricity.
Try it yourselves. Listen closely to the machine when it's idle on dashboard and kinect is unplugged.

It should sound like the hdd is working overtime or an old printer. Mine has this problem.
It even goes on for a while after it's turned off. People are suggesting it has something to do with power management when idle.

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
Let's be honest, the actual PS4 and X1 consoles are both of similar build qualities. The X1 uses more glossy plastic so it gives off the impression of having a higher build quality. The PS4 is louder because it is a more compact console. The wobble is a serious non-issue and I don't understand why anyone brings it up. You need to apply a lot of pressure on one corner of the console to get it to wobble, something you probably won't be doing very frequently or at all.

The controller, I'm gonna have to give the nod to MS. If there's one thing MS has done right across all of their consoles, it's the controller. All of them(even the Duke) feel very high quality and solid in your hands. The DS4, outside of the sticks, also feels really high quality, which is a first for Sony because all of the previous dual shocks and the original PS1 controller have felt kinda cheap. If it wasn't for the sticks on the DS4, I'd put them on par with each other.
