So is it reading comprehension or critical thinking that is lacking with the pot calling the kettle black responses?
To be fair, shortening it in any way would have likely caused this. Don't fret.

I'm referring to your second sentence.
Main/sole representative in a genre? I guess things like LBP, Puppeteer, Rayman etc don't exist. On the other hand, Activision or EA doesn't make just shooters last I checked.
IW is just one studio, so it makes little sense expecting anything vastly different. EAD 3 has made like 10 Zelda games and 2 spinoffs in the past 15 years. Nintendo's isn't any different in that respect.
So is it reading comprehension or critical thinking that is lacking with the pot calling the kettle black responses?
No just the usual Nintendo thread shit posting.
Step it up then, Miyamoto.
Errm he also Directed Zelda Ocarina of Time, one of the best reviewed titles in the entire history of the Industry. He produced Metroid Prime
What he said does not make sense. He's saying that game creators are creating more of the same. But isn't that what's been doing also lol? He's been bringing Mario/Zela/Donkey Kong from one iteration after another...itsn't that the same old stuffs that he keep bringing out year after year? lol. He's talking about bloody shooting games and more of it....but people are creating something that consumers want and that's how they make money. It is no difference than him keep bringing out Mario year after year lol. I get that he probably hate shooting games and that has to do with the fact that Wii console are pretty much for kids and that's why he feel jealous that the industry are all about shooting game and not enough Mario lol.
But then again, this type of comments are reserve for someone that are loyal to Nintendo. He like to criticize anything that pretty much isn't Nintendo. I remember he talk smack about the Oculus Rift too saying it is not a good idea because it is going to isolate people....yea whatever. The man should just shut his mouth and stick to just making game...because that's what he's good at imo.

You should educate yourself on what Miyamoto has actually been committing most of his time to before making yourself look ignorant like this. What he said does not make sense. I think stuff like this is why we have such a large percentage of male gamers vs female gamers. I know thats a controversial comment but when you consider 93% of Nintendo Eshop customers are male https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&s...AQFjAB&usg=AFQjCNHbQsnCKWvrs6IrXxNZSbHFSkyIhACame for the "bu-bu-bu Mario!" shitposting, not surprised.
Anyway, in regard for the actual OP, I think Miyamoto is correct in that there don't seem to be that many genres or settings being explored. Outside of the indie space, obviously...
Personally I'm pretty tired of the "so you have this gun, and you shoot bullets at people and stuff and sometimes get behind cover" approach that seems to pervade a lot of games nowadays. It IS very samey. There are a lot of interesting places to go in games and it seems like the focus is on where we can go and shoot stuff because there's a war going on or whatever.
I'd be curious to see a big developer try a "Romance" genre game with a "AAA" budget, for instance. Just to see what that would look like. I have to believe we're not just stuck with dating sims and Gigolo Mode for that entire genre, are we?

Some stuff, go read his post to check it out.

Since joining GAF it feels like every single Nintendo thread is like a miniature version of Lord of The Flies.
I do agree with this. Look at how many companies tried and failed to chase the COD market, for example. And he doesn't hold himself exempt from this.
It's a combination that and someone people honestly not giving a damn as long as they can get a dig in on Nintendo and point and laugh. It happens whenever a thread like this appears. All the damn time. The substance of what is being said is ignored so someone can latch on to just part of a statement, ignore the context, so they can make a false equivalency and pat themselves on the back trying to be clever. Which also was done in this thread. It's damn tiring.
Meanwhile Destiny is the most preordered game of all time, had a massive and successful launch, and is well on its way to becoming the next Call of Duty.
Gamers know what they want and they are voting with their wallets. The sales of Wii U vs. PS4 + Bone should be proof enough. Maybe if Miyamoto focused more on what the players want instead of what he wants, Nintendo would be doing better in home consoles than they are right now.
I definitely have developed a Nintendo-related inferiority complex on these boards. It makes me more defensive and more sympathetic to Nintendo than I should be, because no one else gives them any credit or the benefit of the doubt, ever.
I do try to cope though. I own a PS3 now and everything!
Has he seen Gamescom? Cause there was a lot outside the typical fare announced there.

Now I'm out.
He's referring to games being made, new IPs, that are similar to other IPs because they're popular. Look at GTA and the clones. Look at WoW and it's clones. Look at CoD and the clones. He's not exactly wrong. Hell, he has even been critical of himself and of Nintendo when it comes to making sequels and whatnot.

Yeah, I understand the feeling. It's like no one can read or can't understand nuance so I feel like I have to spell it out. It makes me come off fanboyish to a lot just having too so that doesn't help =/. Miyamoto isn't excluding himself or Nintendo just like all those other times he's given criticism about the industry. I have a PS3 too. I've been Sony and Nintendo for a long time now.
Main/sole representative in a genre? I guess things like LBP, Puppeteer, Rayman etc don't exist. On the other hand, Activision or EA doesn't make just shooters last I checked.

Nintendo thread. It's impossible to actually have a discussion whenever Miyamoto (or anyone at nintendo) comments on the industry because people are too busy going for fucking zingers.
To the posters saying "lol kettle pots, lol glasshouses and stones". Compare the software lineups for the Wii U to those of the PS4 and the Xbone. You will see that one system has a pretty unique line up of games without similar equivalents on the other two. Try harder.
I dunno man, you can say what you want about them rehashing the same old franchises but there is more creativity and originality in a new Mario game than there is in an entire gen of first person shooters.
So you want Nintendo to make clones of AAA bloody, realistic shooters, open-world adventure, driving games and whatever else is popular just like Microsoft, Sony and every other third party publisher.Meanwhile Destiny is the most preordered game of all time, had a massive and successful launch, and is well on its way to becoming the next Call of Duty.

He has been creating new IPs. Again, stop making yourself look like a fool by running with that assumption he's responsible for NSMB and nothing else.Oh i agreed about NEW IPs and more cloning...wholeheartedly. But you can't fault them for that because that's where the money is......no difference than him bringing out the same stuffs instead creating NEW IPs lol.
There are a shocking amount of people on this forum who don't take the time to actually fucking read the topic that they're posting in. He's clearly not exempting Nintendo from doing the same; he's saying that it's an inherent problem of the video game industry, and most developers, including himself, have a hard time escaping it.
But no, let's just have a drive-by shitpost instead.
You folks really need to read Miyamoto's interview in EDGE.
Thing is, apparently people don't understand they're trying to compare a industrywide trend compared to the output of one company. Come on guys. Several publishers out there have multiple shooter IP's in their portfolio and they're trying to outwit eachother. I know Miyamoto's monniker for "bloody shooter games" is pretty terrible, but we understand some of the context right?
Puppeteer and Rayman don't disprove Shiggy's point. You can hardly use them to represent the AAA gaming landscape because both sold relatively poorly and you basically listed every non-Nintendo or indie platformer.
Also as someone else said, an IP is just a coat of paint. Zelda's constantly changing in art style and design principles, as many people who played Skyward Sword will tell you. Plus this isn't about one company making a series of similar games, it's many companies making similar games. So I don't know why people think listing the amount of Nintendo games in a given franchise is a counterpoint.
While your point about Metroid is valid, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is also one of the best reviewed titles in the entire history of the industry. Shouldn't that teach you a point about your second point about the quality of the reviews in the history of the industry?
I know this answer most people wil just ignore, but...
you have to maintain revenue. you have to have a 'cash cow' to keep the lights on. If you do not maintain some level of dependable quarterly revenue, investors get spooked.
Mario is such a 'revered' character that he gets a lot of scrutiny... but truth be told, it's just another yearly franchise for nintendo. they need to release a big mario game every year. it keeps them from laying off a lot of people.
that said, there is still a ton of innovation with that character.
and they will continue to do 'tentpole' releases every few years with mario. but for the most part, they gotta do it annual because it brings in the money to keep them afloat.
and allows them to take risks in other genres.
and c'mon, you know this is Miyamoto talking.
He doens't see the skin of a game, he seems the mechanics behind it. so even if mario is in 5 games, to his mind anyway, those are 5 uniquely designed and different experiences.
to him, 5 shooters - even though we see different worlds and set pieces and features - he just sees the core mechanics of shooting enemies with projectiles from a first person view. his creative perspective just sees the same tenets.
The point is different developers making games that are too similar with about as much originality as the meme you used in your post. With the variety of Mario games that fill out different types of game play, pointing out NSMB is a moot point.Mario games! Much variety, Such innovation, different art, oh my!
No they don't. You enjoy Nintendo games, that's why you can't see, or really don't care about their lack of originality and supposedly can see it for an "entire gen of first person shooters"
There is nothing more creative or original in 3D World than there is in Titanfall, Wolfenstein or especially Bulletstorm, which btw took a much more daring and original take on the its own genre than Mario Kart 8 did.
