Xbox One sold 23k during launch week in Japan, TitanFall best-selling title

Considering the state of the market (consoles selling like shit, PS4 is already a well established console) the sales are acceptable.

Yeah, I'm sure Microsoft is just thrilled having likely lost millions of dollars and taken the title of "Worst Japanese Console Launch Ever."

Totally acceptable sales.

You can say that I guess, but I see the numbers as being on target for MS by looking at the recent trends of EU sales.
It would be bad if they predicted 100k, and only managed 23k.
But if their expected sales were in the low 30-40k, 23k isn't bad.
Lowered expectations? Nah, MS is just keeping it real and trying to be accurate on their forecast.

Lol... If ~20k (or even 40k) was their forecast, they're complete morons for even bothering. They'll probably never make back the money they spent launching the thing in Japan. It's a money sink, nothing more. I agree with those saying that it's just to stay in the good graces of Japanese devs. But I highly doubt they expected to sell this badly.

Doing worse than the PSP GO is some kind of special award.
People are thinking that there won't be a new PSP but seriously for Japan there probably won't be a next xbox at this rate!

Wow sold way worse than 360 and in twice the amount of days. I don't know why they are bothering tbh it's a lost market to consoles and even worse towards ms consoles.

Would it even be worth Microsoft releasing another console in Japan at this point?
Like the 360 was selling like 20-100 most weeks this past year.

And the XB1 had an extra 3 days of sales.

These are catastrophic numbers. I wonder what, if anything, they could possibly do to counter this.

Bare minimum would have been to not do exactly what Sony did and have a porfolio appealing software for the region, of course if they kept up with how they started the Xbox 360, they might have had a better base to build off despite the market overall tanking.

I was thinking the same thing, also, it got beaten by Bandai SwanCrystal which I never even heard about, probably because of the price.

Maybe the xbox one will get some sales once it will have Japanese games and will be sold with a more affordable price tag.

Nothing. Japan doesn't want consoles, and they especially don't want Xbox. Why fight an uphill battle against 2 Japanese consoles for such a small prize? Frankly, I'm kinda surprised it launched there at all, but I guess with the delay they just waited until production costs made it feasible.

Another one? It wasn't worth releasing the last two (arguably three!).

I can only assume they feel obliged to support the region as some sort of nod to videogame heritage or something.

What trend are you talking about?

Well by the same token why launch in Tier 2 countries too then?

23k is fine, MS will treat it like any other European country that puts up these numbers. To them it's a different market than to Sony and Nintendo.

I doubt there's much they can do. Current and prospective library known about isn't going to change anything.

They could try timed exclusives or try and tie up a big franchise like Final Fantasy but I think the local market still wouldn't respond: they'd shun the title and wait for it to inevitably come to a different platform.

They could try and develop a strong stable of true exclusives specific to region but that would take time they don't have and really if they wanted to make this play they should have continued to build on what they did last gen.

TBH when you look at it MS settled for relying on timed exclusives too much last gen and didn't keep a strong enough flow of titles in the tail end of 360s time on market before XB1 launch and with the loss of natural momentum with the reveal and backlash they've really been left high and dry for sales growth in most if not all regions.

Japan was never going to be a good market for them but this is looking like a collapse that could see XB1 sell well below 360 and possibly even OG Xbox given home consoles in general are trending down in region.

How have they lost money? there is no buyback protection for retailers in Japan. The consoles MS shipped are paid for in full upfront. Doesn't matter if they rot on JP shelves for the rest of the gen.

What this will do is cause B-tier JP games to be PS exclusive.

Thank god Arbeloa and family were there to buy an XBone.

i really thought Xbox One was going to be the system to reverse the console trend in Japan. Damn it :(

I sense sarcasm (haha).

But yeah, I knew the Xbox One would completely flop there based on how the other new consoles are doing in Japan (and just how unpopular the brand is there alone).

Worst console launch ever in Japan. And they include 4 days in the numbers whereas for the rest they include 2/3 days only.

Around 30 times worse than PS4
Around 5 times worse than Xbox 360

I think all of us had very low expectations with this launch, but this is just plain astonishingly horrible.

Unless MS really really puts down an amazing amount of money and secures a huge exclusive relevant to Japan, they are dead already and it's not even a week since they started. And even in that case I really doubt they can remotely be on par with the rest of consoles...

I dont know how much they have lost, but it cost money to operate in Japan in terms of support and preperateion for the launch etc..

What a huge bomba. There is no way to spin this as a positive, especially since both competitors sold 15x more in their launches. If it had sold 50k-60k, ok, but 23k?

To be fair, the PSP might have been a poorly-conceived product, but it was still a PSP-based device being sold in Japan at the height of Monster Hunter.

PSPGo in Japan was like trying to sell always online in a world with only 56k connection.

Physical and retail are king in Japan. Games that get digital releases are retail games in Japan for a reason.

2012.12.08 [Nintendo Wii U] (¥26.250 / ¥31.500) - 308.570 (2 days)
2014.02.22 [Sony PlayStation 4] (¥41.979 / ¥46.179)- 322.083 (2 days)
2014.09.04 [Microsoft XBox One] (¥43.178 / ¥53.978) - 23,562 (4 days)

2002.02.22 [Microsoft XBox] (¥34.800) - 123.929 (3 days)
2005.12.10 [Microsoft XBox 360] (¥29.000 / ¥39.795) - 62.135 (2 days)
2014.09.04 [Microsoft XBox One] (¥43.178 / ¥53.978) - 23,562 (4 days)

It's not bad, basically the same launch numbers as the original Xbox:

Xbox 123k
Xbox one23k

It's not that bad, is it?

Very decent figures. But let's see if they can do what Sony couldn't and maintain that momentum.

That's pretty bloody good!

I know, that's where the poorly-concieved product comes in. It still had a powerhouse game to aid it along even so, though.

Or to put it another way: I think if Monster Hunter wasn't the phenomenon it was, PSP Go wouldn't have sold as much as it did at launch. Then again, I would also say that if MH wasn't the phenomenon it was, PSP Go wouldn't have been created, so swings and roundabouts!

It really is interesting how the Japanese market seems to move so resolutely in one direction. I'm surprised there aren't more people out there that enjoy owning all of the current consoles. I still only have four retail Xbox One games almost a year after launch but I'm happy to have purchased the system as I will get some use out of it eventually.

Honestly, it almost seems like MS only bothered releasing the system in Japan for the handful of people that might want to buy it. It's like they're doing their few fans over there a solid. I can't imagine them making any money in Japan (probably losing money).

I asked a Japanese friend what he thought of these numbers and he replied "sugoi." So fear not, these are in fact sugoi numbers!
