Destiny is UK's biggest ever new IP launch

Not at all, but a 50/50 split between both companies must be a bit underwhelming for Sony.

We will see in the next few weeks how it fares, if the split WW is something like in the UK then I can say that that money could've been spent on better things imo.

Ms is spending a fuckton of money on the fifa deal and cod deal yet the last games sold better on ps4.

Hurrah for marketing! >_>

Still wonder how Destiny's long game will be affected by the mixed reception.

Also, 4% Ps3? Wow.

Wasnt that the most advertised game of all time ?

How could it not be succesfull with 4 major consoles on the market

Also some of the hands down worst games of all time i have played are "most succefull" ones, so it does not mean much

Significant lead for the PS4 version as expected. That a Bungie game can sell so much better on a Sony console than a Microsoft one really sums up just how unpopular the Xbox One is.

Caveman consoles need to gtfo already though.

I would never buy a multiplatform game on an inferior hardware system, so it makes sense that everyone with a PS4 would buy it there

2 consoles barely one year into their life-span with less than 20 million units in the market.

2 consoles at the end of their life, and doing significantly worse than their successors even though there's 160 million units sold. ( actual install base lesser than 160, but you get my point)

Dat exclusive marketing, money lost I guess.

The most up-to-date figures I can find suggest the sales split in the UK between PS4 and Xbone is 1.5:1, and assuming those figures are still correct (as of January this year) then the Xbone actually has a higher attach rate for this game.

16th biggest of all time.

That's pretty crazy for a new IP that is always online and seems to have been a pretty major disappointment for a lot of people. That's the power of marketing, I guess.

36% on Xbox One? That is nice to see. I thought it might be lower than 25%. And also glad to see 14% on Xbox 360.

Overall, no loser between hardware manufacturers, game developer and the publisher.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Released on Tuesday 9th September, Activision Blizzard and Bungie’s blockbuster ‘Destiny’ arrives at No1 as the biggest new IP launch ever.

Destiny is only playable online, but this hasn’t stopped it from toppling this year’s previous biggest launch and new IP, Ubisoft’s ‘Watch Dogs’. The PS4 edition, accompanied by sales from new fixed hardware bundles in both black and white, takes a 46% share, Xbox One 36%, Xbox 360 14% and PS3 4%.
Last week’s No1 ‘The Sims 4’ (-63%) drops to second place ahead of ‘Watch Dogs’ which despite a 29% boost in sales from retailer promotions also slips one place, down to No3. Activision Blizzard have 2 titles in the Top 5 thanks to ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ (+11%) gaining two places, up to No4. ‘The Last of Us: Remastered’ ( -16%) and ‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’ (-6%) both make way for ‘Destiny’, down one place to No’s 5 and 6 respectively. There are two more Top 10 new entries this week with EA’s ‘NHL 15’ launching at No7 (a better placing than NHL 14’s debut at No11) and Bandai Namco’s PS3/360 ‘Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution’ at No10.

‘Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare’ (-20%) and ‘Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition’ (-11%) are both non-movers at No8 and No9. Previous No1s ‘Diablo III Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil’ (-51%) and ‘Metro Redux’ (-52%) both fall out of the Top 10, Diablo down from No5 to No13 and Metro down from No3 to No14. Standalone PS4 expansion ‘Infamous: First Light’ is switched on at No17 and retailer promotions on ‘The Borderlands Collection (1 & 2)’ (+999%) and ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary’ (+235%) push them both back into the Top 40 at No’s 24 and 29 respectively.

We know the lower limit (higher than 388,000), what would be the higher limit in this case, though?

Is 388,000 the number for Watch Dogs?

Maybe Assassin's Creed, did we ever get numbers for that? That would be biggest franchise that is not listed in that tweet, I think.

LOL at people saying 10% lead is under whelming.

For people to say good for Microsoft when they are 10% behind, in a country where they used to dominate and be 10/15% ahead, on prototypical xbox game - a shooter (wolfenstein, COD splits were 50/50),where they were just about giving the game away with offers, shows just how far they have fallen.

EDIT: also watch them watchdogs like legs for everyone not named the Xbone

I meant overall but even then PS4/Xbone split is not bad considering exclusive marketing and bundles.

I dont know why people keep bringing up this exclusive marketing like it makes much different to sales, ms has the exclusive marketing for fifa and cod yet they sold better on ps4 sony had the asscreed exclusive marketing last gen yet it sold better on 360 here, they dont make much difference in reality.

The PS4/Xbox One split?

Not seeing how they can be happy.

How is it bad?

PS4 has sold more, had marketing deals, exclusive content, a white PS4 bundle with the game and still only sold 10% more.

I'd be pretty happy if I was MS, to only be 10% below PS4 sales is really good considering all the xbox version had going against it.

Should be no 1 for a while. Although It will be interesting if Destiny can compete with Cod or if it will tail offin sales.

Xbox bundle were giving away destiny and halo collection for the same price as the white ps4.

Split is smaller than I anticipated, but there are lots of hardcore Halo/Bungie fans on Xbox.
Should've gone full current gen, that 18 percent would've upgraded anyway.

This is 10% difference only for the UK which is MS second biggest territory so it will be worse in other areas.

This is the complete opposite of last gen.

You mean for two weeks? FIFA launches on 26th of September.

Not that I would have minded them going full current gen but UK is not the best indicator of the sales for last gen consoles. For example Watch_Dogs while selling way better on current gen in UK, in some other European countries PS3 versions has charted higher than PS4 version after the launch (France for example).

Not seeing how they can be happy.

It is good considering the co-marketing, exclusive contents, PS4 > 1million installbase. I would say Destiny Xbox One version sold quite well.

But I don't think it will enjoy the lag as the PS4 version. I guess next week PS4 version will be still on the top, but Xbox One version will slide.

You're not wrong from one perspective, but there's also the secondary perspective.

This is a Bungie game. Known for Halo. Their entire fanbase built on a franchise that will forever be Xbox exclusive, even though it's no longer Bungie making them.

Sony can market the shit out of Destiny, but anyone with a bit of sensibility will know that that marketing efforts will still be hampered by the fact that Destiny, is a multiplatform game, and that Halo is still coming to Xbox only, and nothing is changing that fact.

Sony had the 'exclusive content' and marketing. Xbox has the established Bungie/Halo fanbase and exclusive Halo games in the pipeline. I say both factors about evens out in the end.

FIFA will kill Destiny in the UK charts, even if it was a 10/10 critical success.

Sony would have spent tens of millions on exclusive marketing, yet there's only ten per cent difference.

I mean more as in shooters and multiplayer.

Retailers had plentiful offers for the XBone with Destiny and Bungie/Halo fans knowing about the game. Exclusive marketing isn't all that powerful I don't feel. It helps but in many cases it doesn't turn the tide. See past FIFA PS3 marketing where 360 sold more or FFXIII 360 where PS3 sold more, as just 2 examples.

The gap would have been wider if there was a big gap in the performance of the 2 like what happened with Watch Dogs. Which is I feel the main reason why Watch Dogs sold much more on PS4 rather than just exclusive marketing.

The split seems reasonable, there is the Bungie/MS history after all is said and done.
And there wasn't any noticeable difference in performance to drive extra sales on PS4 either.

The market currently for next gen is made up of savy gamers too, this sort of marketing doesnt really do much for them they know its coming to all and they know its coming to there machine of choice. Later in the gen is where you see it taking effect and effecting console buyers.

Therefore, PS4 version sold at least 178,480 copies.

Edit:

XB1: 139,680
360: 54,320
PS3: 15,520

PS3 figure is shocking.

I think that if they had dropped the PS3 version (and maybe the 360 version, but that one is doing alright i guess) and instead used the time/money to create a PC version, they would have sold more.

I guess we'll really know how fruitful the marketing deal is when we see overall worldwide how Destiny did and how the bundles does as well.
