The tediousness of unlocking custom moves is alleviated somewhat by the realization that I'll almost never be able to use custom moves.

Unless of course they patch in a mode in which we can use custom move sets with random internet battles.

Really disappointing I can't play smash run online. And if I do bother to play it so I get custom moves for my characters, I can't use those moves online for 99% of my online play (randoms).

Pretty much killed my hype for the 3ds version. <sob>

I know that when playing locally, I am exclusively using sword-dorf.

I hope nintendo tracks which custom moves people use, too, so they can one day give me a true ganondorf, and not smashdorf, who might as well be a mii.
Yeah, I'll probably always have that one on. Poor Ganondorf doesn't deserve Smash moveset limbo.
inb4 most custom moves are worthless and less than half the cast is viable
Exactly. Copycat. :p

This would be tight for a Super-style update/DLC expansion:

Captain Toad, btw, could have some great moves, like dashing forward in the minecart while flinging turnips, swinging the pickaxe power-up, a star-shroom recovery, vegetable plucking, and even the fire dragon for a Final Smash. :-O

You could play with friends over the internet. And friends need not refer to RL friends either

Most of the mysteriously absent modes will probably be back in the Wii U version. Maybe not the minigames, but I think we'll get event mode, stamina, and special modes.

I'm still so confused why didn't they put it in the 3DS version? All those variations (giant, metal, flower, and the like) are in the game in Smash Run. Why, just.. Why?

:(

And that's before you modify each character's properties with equipment affecting their attack, defense, speed, etc.

I only plan use the equipment for my Mii Shooter and amiibos. I don't want to have to get accustomed to using the same characters with different properties. Especially with the amount of online I'm going to play.

Wait, I thought it was just a For Glory thing :O

Is customisation turned off in For Fun? What's the point then? :\

I think most people will likely not use equipment outside of single player stuff or playing locally SOMETIMES.

When picking your custom character loadout (you can save up to 8 per character) it tells you if you have stat-boosting equipment on (Sword icon/Shield Icon/Boot icon depending on which stat is highest - vs no icon if you have nothing equipped). You won't be able to secretly select stat-boosted versions of characters without your opponent knowing, at least on wii U.

Yup, custom moves only work when playing w/ friends. The point is to keep potentially broken custom move loadouts from becoming the meta online. It's no fun when everyone figures out the broken moves and then you ONLY face that opponent over and over online.

I still think there should be a 'custom move enabled' for anyone mode, but oh well.

Yeah, find friends on NeoGaf!

I remember when Brawl was new, Smashboards had a pretty nifty matching making/friend finder web app thing. Hopefully something like that turns up for this game (here, there, or otherwise).

Yeah. :(

Probably debugging time for all the different combinations. In a more cynical view, possibly to save as a cheap selling point for the Wii U edition.

I found this in the other thread. Have people actually found this by data mining or is this just hope for DLC?

MnO1848.gif

The arrow was found through data mining and the gif shows how dlc stages could potentially work. However, it's possible that the arrow used to be there just to flip between the stages already present and they decided to put all the stages in one screen for the final build.

Sakurai is crazy. You can only have true fun with your friends apparently. No custom moves and no Miis for anonymous online. Like it should have been easy to use the skins that are used in the official renders for Miis, wouldn't it?

Why are we making custom moves/equipment sound like some underhanded tactic? I think it's perfectly fine to use them when both people understand they're being used. Whether it's an online match with people in my Friends list or a local match with friends and family, I think it'd be fun for both sides to try using fully customized characters.

I'm especially eager to explore the equipment when it comes to Amiibos. I want to craft a SMB1 throwback Bowser for my Amiibo assistant/sparring partner, with the green skin, straight-shooting fireballs, the rocket jump recovery, the vortex bomb, the claw dash recovery, etc. If I can power him up to be more akin to a boss, I'll take it! :)

Button is real. Hope is real. Mockup is fake.

I think there's way more potential to exploit balance if you include stat boosting, especially since some stat boosting items are definitively better than others. For example (made up numbers, but the idea is actually something i've seen) there's a weapon that does +25 damage -18 shield, and another that does +25 damage - 5 shield. One is objectively better than the other one, so a player who has found better equipment than you will have a competitive advantage.

I don't know if there's a set list of equipment or if it's randomly generated, but if it's randomly generated, it's definitely not fair as people who grind more will have a competitive advantage.

I know, and GAF is a great community to get "friends" to play with, but I think a lot of my playtime will be impromptu and spontaneous. I won't always have time to come online, find someone willing to play, make sure we have each others' friend codes, and set up a play date. Most of the time (I anticipate) I'd just want to fire it up and look for a match.

Often I'll have time for just a few quick fights, and not be able to do a marathon session. So each time I'd have to go through the process of finding a friend, etc. etc.

It's just frustrating to lock that content behind friends-only play. Why?

I just had a good series of For Fun matches online. I have to stop dying in the closing seconds of the match. You can almost always get one or two tree kills as Villager though.

I hope that's the case for characters. DLC stages are whatever, but I don't want to be stuck buying additional characters.

The triangles are real, everything else is speculation.

Alright so then this is probably nothing. Still hope their is DLC for more stages in 3DS smash.

If you have a ton of friends on your system, and you go to play online w/ friends, you can see anyone who is currently playing online and if they have a lobby set up w/ slots open.

Will likely be more frequent at launch than in the future, but it's still POSSIBLE to have impromptu friend matches. Unfortunately, there is no way to invite people to play online :/ They have to either communicate ahead of time or see you have a lobby open w/ open slots.

Hey, my GIF is making the rounds. So no one gets their hopes up: it's just a mockup demonstrating how the triangles could hypothetically work.

Though I really would like those stages as DLC...

Just wait for the gaf > internet > gaf of some blog posting it as a fact and then someone linking the page here.

I would say, this is most likely the case. Otherwise, they could just add in a button to select DLC stages with the DLC itself.

That arrow means alot, though. You gotta understand that Smash comes out in such long intervals, we need to get it in now, or prepare to wait for the next Nintendo console in 5 years +.

What's wrong with that? If this game's good enough, 5 years should give us plenty of time to enjoy it. If it's not good enough, DLC characters won't really help.

2 stock is the for glory standard, which is what most streamers are showing.

WHen playing w/ friends you can do 99 stock if you want.

Stamina/coin matches are gone though. Only time/stock, up to 99 (minutes/stock) each.

Nooooooooooooooo !!!

How will I joke to my Street Fighter freak friend that this is just like Street Fighter ???

=P

Someone bothered to do the math, which is interesting:

...Custom moves banned from tournaments confirmed ? =P

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
Not even one arrow. It's four arrows. (Or maybe just two? I heard it was four, I've only seen photographs of two though.)

Four. Two for character select, two for stage select.

...Custom moves banned from tournaments confirmed ? =P
Don't worry, you can participate in the BGBW FOR FUN tournaments that are guaranteed to be more fun than all the other tournaments!

So, a Spanish site says that Nintendo Ibérica confirmed DLC in a press conference this morning: http://www.deculture.es/2014/09/18/super-smash-bros-3ds-dlc/

I'd translate the whole thing but I have no time now, maybe someone else can do it. Basically it says that Nintendo made it official during the conference but did not give more information.

By the way, first post here! I've been waiting for more than a year because I forgot to confirm my email address. I'm very happy to be finally posting here!

I don't really think you understood what I was saying in the least bit.
