Summer 2014 Anime |OT3| where everyone watches doremi for hito

I actually liked the petty kid feud angle. The baseball sequence and aftermath livened up what was an intentionally slow-moving courtroom drama for me. The rest of it lacked the same spark that I got from the kids since the show doesn't have the dramatic characters to make such a premise compelling to watch and Dandy, as a form of comic relief, wasn't there either. It reminded me a lot of the early S1 episodes in that it was serviceable in execution, but it lacked the creative drive that has made the majority of S2 really soar.

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(

Is it me or is there a point at around 18:30 that they failed to animate the characters talking properly?

Big spoiler so don't click thinking it's not.
Inaho rises from the grave due to writer magic come January A.D. 2015

The mecha CG transformation during the fight felt like I was watching mighty morphing power rangers. Everything except the very end was bland this episode, but that is to be expected. Also it has been awhile since I've seen cannon fodder that I'm starting to feel for the poor regular troops who happen to be written background characters who die. I would just like to take this moment to honor all cannon fodder characters present in all types of media. Poor cannon fodder who exist to just fill plot points about facing insurmountable odds. :( The conclusion definitely wasn't bland though. Great way to end it off since I believe there are many individuals with so much salt right now.

Also can I get some recommendations for good or must watch Mecha shows? I feel like watching some now. Should probably list what I've seen.

its not mecha, but if you want something to tickle that sci-fi itch, i would recommend GAF's anime of the year 2013, Space battleship yamato 2199. unlike aldnoah, its a pretty entertaining show. as far as mecha, i would recommend SDF macross tv, and afterwords macross:Do you remember love. also old school UC gundam, like 0079 and zeta are highly recommended.

Will Inaho survive?

Slaine is the most insufferable idiot. I want to believe the reason he got discriminated on previous episode is not because he is a Terran, but because he is a massive idiot. Keep your priority straight you stupid fuck!

Screw it, i'm going to watch the continuation, because i want to see how far the rabbit hole goes with this story.

Oh hey, an episode where Sinon wasn't sexualized.

Looks like Kirito is at the end of his role here. Can't see what trick he pulls out of his hat.

I always recommend Gunbuster and Diebuster.

That OP is goddamn amazing.
From what I can gather, this is a story about the conflict between good and evil which takes place in the city of Kawasaki and that Sunred is a dick.

Eh, there are always ups and downs, disappointments and surprises. I think it's being too pessimistic to assert that anime is in some never ending death spiral.

Have to say I'm so glad I'm not as jaded as some people. But I guess that probably comes from this being my I guess second year of watching anime. So I guess I'm still in the honeymoon period.

Well, to think of it from a different perspective, maybe it's just that there's a lot more posters in the thread than before, which means more people to watch more shows and potentially give more disappointed reactions when they end. So it could be a numbers thing.

I mean, for me at least, the season's been an even split, with about a third of the shows I watched turning out really great for me, another third being okay, and a third winding up disappointing in the end.

This episode was actually... decent?

Aside from the stupid shit that I've come to expect from this tripe the character interaction between onii-chan and imouto was actually good during their visit to the aquarium.

Thank you for the recs, and I'll go check them out. Should give me plenty to watch for sure.

Will you just watch Neon Genesis Evangelion already?

In due time.

I'm not sure I've been really disappointed this season. I dropped 5 shows this season, thought 2 or maybe 3 were 'excellent', whilst the other 10 or so I watched were decent/enjoyable.

Pretty bell curve like I guess, which is kind of what I expect from a season.

I guess if anything I have some slight disappointments in that some shows I'd like to see more of I simply won't get second seasons. And I guess I'll feel that more as more shows end. For instance I know I'd like a second season of Haru Ride and am sure I won't get it. Same is true of Nozaki-kun and Barakamon.

I don't think people are necessary jaded, it's just that the more content they consume the higher their standards become. Once you've watched a number of shows the 'novelty' of anime wears off and you start to spot trends, patterns and tropes. It's just part of becoming a well-rounded viewer.

Probably. As I've said before, what brought me to anime (and manga and LN) was being completely burnt out on superheroes. Obviously there's probably still superheroes media I'd like, but I can't be bothered for the most part. Though the DC TV material has been slightly interesting...so I guess I'm not totally over supers.

Still I'm now what amounts 18 months into anime/manga/ln being almost my complete fiction diet and I'm still enjoying myself. I thought I'd last 6 months and give up.

I think it's just the natural flow of the thread, I can't really discern any recent trend towards extreme negativity.

I'm just trying to make sure I don't burn myself out on anime or get obsessed with needing to stay up to date ASAP on any currently airing shows.

Which is a real problem since I've already got like 16 new shows I'm interested in next season, though anywhere from 5 to 7 of them look like they could be quick drops if they don't amaze immediately.

Just toward pornography.

I still remember when people here had pornatars. Good times.

While I always appreciate the enthusiasm in these older dubs, I truly despise the need to speak extremely quickly so as to keep pace with the animation. It just sounds awful.
Yes that is true. Though I think it is a necessary evil. Synchronising dialogue in dubs can be nigh impossible.
Nowadays though, that old cheesy enthusiasm serves as more of a gimmicky curiosity so I think quality becomes irrelevant.

Shounen Hollywood 11

A bittersweet episode. It's discouraging to work hard for a goal only to find out that maybe that goal isn't attainable after all. But sometimes you just have to give it your best in spite of all that.

Ghost girl goes missing and the cursed belt disappears. However, imouto goes looking for ghost girl. Why you do this? The nightmare is over!

When she finds ghost girl the belt reappears and some BS is contrived to explain its disappearance.

Two left...

Usagi Drop Ep. 7

This episode rather bugged me. :| Little things here and there have been bugging me and I'm afraid that it's going to culminate in something big. (No, I'm talking about that.) This is the second(?) time Daikichi has been the voice of reason for a woman. Sure, she points out that he overstepped a boundary by talking to her in-laws but I don't feel that was emphasized enough. Then it has to end
with her going back to her unhappy marriage. I really hope this suplot doesn't end there. Sure, it's not inherently bad that she went back but I feel like the issue was mishandled.

Given what I know about
the manga's ending
, I didn't exactly go into this expecting it to be a very strong feminist work. Especially since it is being filtered through the anime industry.

Pretty inoffensive for a budget episode. Had a few laughs in it, but it felt like it was just a lead up to that last scene at the court house steps... last episode is going to be so bonkers.

Hellsing too stronk! The story is dumb as all hell but look at those sweet fight scenes. And all the blood and swearing too! It's everything my 14 year old self wanted.

Even the ending episode is fucking boring, fuck this show.. they even failed to bring nice mecha action.. for what else you can enjoy the show for? Story barely running and filled with incoherent nonsense sucking everything from the characters that actually can be fun, what left is big doze of animu's ass and bewb in every episode.

I rather watch Heroman again.

Gary Stu's New Clothes

So Sword Art Online II had cliffhanger this week where they tried to put Kirito in peril, since his one-on-one face-off with Death Gun puts up against some impossible odds:

OjS6LBrl.jpg

IT'S MADE FROM THE ARMOR OF A SPACE BATTLESHIP GUYS!

The episode then leaves us with the understanding that Kirito is in deep peril:
YZJ4O2Yl.jpg

You can do it, Kirito-chan!

The real problem is that none of this is actually believable. We remember from the first season that Kirito is just so awesome that even faced with certain death, he is able to pull a deus ex machina out of his ass and still manage to save the day. Having sat through this twice already, why do we even believe for a second that Death Gun will actually kill Kirito?

On the one hand, you want to have a character arc, because it allows you to show growth in the character and also create dramatic tension. But if it's already established that Kirito is the pinnacle of human evolution, so good at games that he is able to cut bullets out of the air with his light sword, so why would we believe that he is in any real danger?

This is really the problem with these self-insert power fantasy shows, especially if they go back to the well over and over again. We are meant to treat them as if they are real characters who are crafted with the same character arcs that we see in any other story, with ups and downs that make them sympathetic to the audience. The reality is that Kirito is a character without character. He doesn't have a character arc, he just exists to be aggrandized in the context of the plot so that the audience can feel better about themselves. It's why I found this ending particularly insulting, because it is someone trying desperately to convince you that you are watching something that you are not.

Not that Mahouka is any better. But what makes it somewhat admirable is that it is so naked with Tatsuya's characterization. He literally has no arc. Rather than pretend he is a normal man who builds up to being a hero, he starts off the show as an action hero cliche. The show never really puts him in peril: it just uses each story arc to show you how his sheer awesomeness manifests itself.

The latest episode pretty much topped the absurdity of Tatsuya by essentially making him a God:
deSIY2fl.jpg

xAwAMb9l.jpg

nZAgfugl.jpg

In many ways it reminds me of the end of Star Trek: Into Darkness, where any tension is immediately removed by the fact that Khan has magic space blood that can bring anyone back to life. The difference here is that Tatsuya has been so "Gary Stu" that of course he can bring someone back to life. He's Tatsuya fucking Shiba, a man so amazing that even his sister wants to have his children.

This is what Sword Art Online might look like if everyone stopped pretending that the show is actually trying to tell a real story and not a vehicle to make the audience feel better about themselves. Of course, I think Mahouka is equally terrible, but it is at least honest about what it is trying to do: sell merchandise to hapless fans.

Euphemia dying made me a little sad at the time, so that's another plus.

This girl? I'm basically indifferent...plus it sounds like she might not be dead (yet again).

Its to the point where I dont think she is going to die at all. she is clearly immortal. No attempt at her life shall be taken seriously.

I watched the first episode of it waaay back when it was airing and where as SYD plays it straight but in an over the top way for laughs, this was more like playing things straight and hopes that laughter fills the cavernous silence afterwards. Can't recommend it.

Edit: Also, watching Gundam Wing makes me feel old. Switched it to JP voices for a change and hearing how young some of the VAs are is just depressing.

Sorry to hear that. I dunno I might fit an episode of it in sometime at random but its not something I would prioritize.

Aria the Animation Series Impressions

Aria is a cat who is the president of a company that employs water goddesses on a dystopian planet flooded by the sea. Cities are in tatters and buildings are crumbling as the sea envelopes what remains of human civilization. What the foolish humans do not realize is that it was this cat's master plan to consume their cities in the flood and extort them for all the money they're worth to ferry them around the city. With the control of human transportation in the dilapidated city, this weird cat thing has become the ruling body. With his new found power he has taken to the simple pleasures of eating ice cream and pizza.

Okay, enough silliness. Aria is anime about girls who work as gondoliers (also known as Undines) to provide boat rides to tourists in Neo-Venice. This is a slice-of-life anime with a science fiction setting on a colonized Mars. This is the first slice-of-life anime I have seen that didn't involve school girls in Japan. The ambient sounds of the sea and call of the gulls as the boats drift silently against the city river ways makes for a peaceful viewing experience. The city has an old European ascetic from the architecture of the buildings. There is very little technology for a science fiction anime but that just lends to the charm of the ambience.

All of the characters have names that start with A. (Aria, Akari, Aika, Alice, Alicia, Akira, Athena). There are three younger journeyman undines and three senior undines that are considered the best of the business. All of the characters have unique personalities and are all very likeable. Akari is the protagonist and main character of Aria. Her voice actor is so calm and her voice so soothing. She does a great job giving a peaceful vibe and never overacts during the silly moments. Aika is the upbeat hardass that takes things a little too seriously. However, she is playful and has some great chemistry and contrast with Akari. Alice is the middle ground of the two and sometimes acts as the mediator. She is probably the most fun of the three of them and she makes some great faces.

Each episode has a self contained story that usually has the basis of training to become better undines. The story may seem simple at first but by the end of each episode there was always some type of message being conveyed which had me philosophizing after I finished each episode. This is what elevates Aria above the other slice-of-life anime I have seen. Sure the premise may appear to be "cute girls doing cute things" but there is far more depth to this anime than what can be seen from the surface.

However it is not without some missteps. There was the silly episode about the cat thing Aria where he ran around town doing silly things which felt out of place and unneeded. There was also some time traveling nonsense that was supposed to lay the foundation for nostalgia and longing but I felt it could be done in some other way that would make sense within the context of the world. Some episodes can get overbearingly sappy (No sappy lines allowed!) but it never detracted from the overall experience and happens very rarely.

The animation for this anime was fantastic. The characters' outfits aren't loud screaming scifi but have a basic design that lends to the overall tone of the setting and tranquil vibe. We get to see beautiful vistas and great city architecture with the water flowing peacefully through the city. The weather had a real impact on the tone of each episode and was beautiful to look at from the setting sun, the dark oppressive clouds and the winter wonderlands.

The soundtrack uses a mixture of piano and acoustic instruments to set the tone of the anime beautifully. It was a treat to listen to and I would probably listen to it on it's own. The OP is fantastic.

Aria is probably one of the best slice-of-life anime I've seen. The characters, music, animation, everything about it was fantastic. I give it a 4/5 and would easily recommend it to others looking for a calm and tranquil experience.

Its such a feel good series. So relaxing and relatively noneventful. but I have to be in a particular frame of mind to watch it. Are you going to continue with The Natural?

I'm glad this season had stuff like Sabagebu, Nozaki, and Barakobamaman. All the "serious" shows kind of disappointed me.

For me it was these plus Hanayamata that saved this season.

Space Dandy 25

Not as bad as I thought! We got explanations for what the stuff Dandy is made of that the Gogol empire wants, which was only mentioned back in episode 1. The main story was obviously a way to save on budget, but I thought the whole resolution with
Dandy's pionium body ripped a hole in space and time to bring in a ball that was hit with the intent of killing the pitcher because he blocked the hitter on twitter
was hilarious and fitting for the series. Its gonna be sad come next week with the last episode.
