Plus, who wants the show to be driven into the ground like Simpsons and Family Guy?
The show is so reliant on current events that I just don't see how it would be driven into the ground like The Simpsons. There's an endless stream of material. They could do the show another 10 years and it would still be a great show. It's not like The Simpsons at all. Just look at all the crazy current events that have went down these past few months... Ray Rice/NFL, Mike Brown killing + shady cops and the riots, the rise of ISIS (now just "IS" I guess). So much material and it will just keep coming forever because it's real life. That's what makes South Park so unique and fresh despite going on for so long already. I really hope we get like at least 4-5 more seasons.

So you fill 50-60% of the season with current event eps and then the rest with original material with the boys on adventures. That's doable for another half decade, isn't it?

"You're getting old" from season 15 would have been a great final episode. For a while I actually thought it was. The final scene between Sharon and Randy, to me it felt like Matt an Trey were showing their own feelings towards each other and the show.
Randy: Because I'm unhappy, okay?! I've been unhappy for a long time! [Sharon reflects on this for a moment and her voice goes soft]
Sharon: I'm unhappy too. We both are, obviously. How much longer can we keep doing this? It's like, the same shit just happens over and over and, then in a week it just all resets until- it happens again. Every week it's kind of the same story in a different way but ih, it just keeps getting more and more ridiculous
[..]
Randy: I don't know if I've changed or you have. I just feel like I might not have a whole lot of time left and, I want to enjoy it.
Sharon: I want to enjoy it too, but... I can't fake it anymore. You just seem kind of shitty to me.
Randy: You kind of seem shitty to me too.
Sharon: People get older, Randy. People grow apart.

Reading that transcript I think you're dead on. It sounds like a meta conversation Matt and Trey would have with each other regarding their true feelings about producing South Park.

I would've liked it if they ended with You're Getting Old. Seems like the perfect way to wrap things up with South Park and move on to something else.

I don't mind that they've kept going, though. I just like down endings, and felt like that would've been a strong one.

Imaginationland is currently on.

Love that trilogy. Prefer it over The Coon and Black Friday trilogies by a mile. It was initially intended and conceptualised as their second feature film planned to be released in theaters and you can tell by its absolutely exceptional quality. I think I laughed harder at Imaginationland than any other episode of South Park that's ever aired.

It's so damn good. I might do a re-watch of it actually in preparation for the new season.

I don't know if they'd be super honest about that seeing as they're doing a commentary track on their employers DVD. I've seen/read interviews with them in the past where when asked about how they're feeling about the new season it's usually like they're dreading working on it, though that may be par for the course since the beginning, just the slog of what they're doing. In that mini doc they aired with the making of humancentipad I know Trey says making every episode starts off exuberant at the possibilities of making a great episode but by the end of it there's usually a lot of disappointment and feeling stressed as fuck. They do have an insane work ethic/perfectionism about them though so I guess that reaction is normal. I wish they'd do some more live action films at some point, the world needs more Orgazmo.

Agree completely. I still remember that scene from the documentary where Trey grabs a Coke Zero and sits at his desk to work on the currently active South Park script and he just holds his head in his hands and looks at the screen as though he's stressed to hell and not enjoying the process at all. I think you're dead on actually. The opening scenes of that documentary show Trey and Bill Hader sitting around that table all excited and happy cracking jokes to each other as they conceptualise the episode and they look like they're having a great time. But then as the air date nears Trey solely evolves into a nervous wreck stressed out at the perceived quality of the episode thinking everyone won't like his work and being paranoid it won't make anyone laugh.

They enjoy the process initially but then the work schedule and doubt takes its toll.

They weren't serious on that and it was as terrible as expected.

I honestly had no idea whatsoever Trey and Matt worked on that. I'd love to check it out if that's the case but the universal consensus I've read on GAF and elsewhere is that the movie's terrible and one of the worst things Sandler has ever done. Are you guys absolutely a hundred percent certain they were involved in that? I just find it difficult believe given Orgazmo, Baseketball, Team America and every live action film they've ever done have been exceptional and profoundly funny. Just doesn't strike me as something they'd be interested in. They seem to like working on their own personal ideas and original projects. Speaking of original projects when the hell are they going to release Book Of Mormon on DVD? I was so disappointed that it didn't get a video release given I've seen it universally praised everywhere and I can't exactly fly to Broadway to see it anytime soon.

Er, what? I think you're misinterpreting something. Trey and Matt had nothing to do with Adam Sandler's movie Jack and Jill.

They just made fun of the movie in the "You're Getting Old" episode before it came out. Later, on the episode commentary, they said it turns out they were totally wrong and Sandler knocked it out of the park - but they were being sarcastic. The movie was obviously shit.

Ah right. Thanks for clearing that up. I thought the very notion of them working on that was ridiculous. Glad now they had nothing to do with it. Cheers for the explanation though. It's all clear now.

Yup. To add something I think Trey is just a stressed creator/producer type in general. I remember watching a behind the scenes making of feature for Team America before it was released that showed him looking frazzled as hell in the directors chair on set, though that production did have a lot of technical hurdles to overcome with all the puppets and practical effects.

In a separate interview about working on South Park he said he usually only cools down between seasons and can only take in if they've produced a good one when he's doing something relaxing like golfing and reminiscing about it. Dude is in full beast mode during production it seems.

I kinda' hope the series ends soon. I think the last few seasons have been a bit hit and miss. But, when it hits it's fucking amazing. I just don't want to see the show go on and on like The Simpsons.

Thing about the Simpsons is that all the original writers were gone after season 4. They maintained continuity with writers hired through those years into season 8. By the time season 12 rolled around they had their third complete changeover.

Imagine if the Beatles replaced Lennon twice. Are they still the Beatles?

South Park was, is, and always will be Matt and Tray, so you don't have to worry about the quality dropping off a cliff like season 20 of The Simpsons.

After seeing Child Abduction Is Not Funny, I realize that the reason why Mr. Kim couldn't keep the Mongorians out of South Park is because he built a shitty wall.

Why do people want SP to end? It's one of the best comedies on TV. Can't wait for the new season to start.

I don't think any of us actively want it to end. The show is amazing, fun and hilarious. It's just all the signs, indications and even quotations from Trey and Matt themselves coupled with the shortened seasons now that potentially and quite probably signal that the show is winding down.

I'd be fine with any number of seasons in its current state. it's past its golden age but it's still good and at least a few great episodes a season make it worth it.

i'd miss shit like this.

Yeah I noticed you can always rely on them to create three or so fantastic, hilarious and great episodes each season. They're reliably on form with at least a few or so a season. Last season and the season just before are a testament to that.

Awesome that you're all so excited. :) South Park airs tonight at 9pm CST which for UK viewers converts to 3am GMT for anyone in the UK who feels like staying up for it. I'm a complete night owl so I'm usually awake throughout the early hours of the morning anyway so I'll definitely be staying up for the South Park premiere.

Just kind of too excited for it to miss it tonight. See you all around 3am!

This should be a better season with Matt an Trey back. Last season they were still working on Stick of Truth, so were hardly around.

Your kidding me? Really? I fucking loved last season (Stop Touching Me Elmo, Kanye West and so on). Matt and Trey weren't around for that? Damn. Well if that's the case this season has the potential to be awesome then since I thought last season without them was hilarious.

Maybe there were sometimes, but they poured a lot of hours working on the game, why it was so good.

When they do end the series I would like to see the boys graduating high school and going their separate ways.

Well they have only aged one year over the course of the entire series. So in about 100 years we will get South Park the college years.
