Now that the game has a steam release as well as out on the PS3 and 360 I feel like this game needs more attention as it might be my favorite XBLA title to date.

What is Outland?

It's a 2d Metroidvania game from Housemarque the guys behind such titles as Resogun and Stardust. It originally released on the 360 and then the PS3 post PSN outage. It now has finally come to PC/Steam today!

What's the hook?

The twist Housemarque has thrown on the genre is the idea of infusing two colors (red/blue) ala Ikaruga into the platforming and action. You can pass through things like projectiles without getting hurt so long as you color match while you do more damage if you are the opposite color.

What else is there?

Housemarque went with a unique gameplay setting as well not much seen in games today by setting it in what appears to be South American like ruins. Think Peru and the Incas. That coupled with the art style and the color pop which also goes along with the gameplay and you have something that with a unique look all it's own!

So, when this news started to leak there was talk of adding a full campaign co-op mode to the Steam version. The earlier console versions only had challenge levels available in co-op. Any more information on that? Could be a great excuse to double dip to play through the entire game with a friend or two.

Gotta say, this is kind of a weak port.

The frame-rate is awfully juddery and I can't seem to find a way to turn off controller vibration.
Really could use some AA as well.

Also this is a minor one but achievements don't appear until after you quit the game. Bit of WTF moment when I beat the first boss without getting hit and didn't get the cheevo.

Hmm..apparently vsync is locked to 30 fps. Why? It doesn't make any sense.

The console versions were 60 fps. Even a straight port shouldn't have produced any issues.

EDIT: Turning off in-game vsync and forcing it via my card seems to work....or not. Getting tearing along the bottom edge. mehhh

Outland was an amazing game and a highlight of previous generation. I wish Housemarque would make a sequel or something similar instead of the games they are making now. And if not, i would love to see a PS4 version to add to my collection. I would gladly pay and play again. I never finished the game though since i gave up during the last boss battle, which is a shame.

It looks like (some) bosses have mid-fight checkpoints now.

That should cut down on some headaches.

I tried to play this in co-op last night and the game was hitching constantly in a way that made it hard to play. We tried single-player after and it worked fine. Anyone else experience this?

not really edit: Decided to look this up on the steam forums and see that other people are also having this problem. I hope it gets fixed soon.
