Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

That archer (forge a something) challenge was such bullshit.

Oh sure take out 10 guys with headshots, no problem.

Okay, so they are firing from both sides and there isn't much cover and they respawn fast...I can still do this.

I get to 6/10 shots in about a minute, less when about 12 archers show up at the start position that I'm firing from - while the other guys are also at their positions. The fuck. My first death :/

May have misjudged the challenge and situation, looking back at the screenshot.
I was doing this one and two captains showed up with their entourage. Fuck that.

Found the challenge itself quite manageable though.

Just got to
Sea of Núrnen
and so happy there's another area. Looks really nice too. Best part, is that
when you are away from the other side of the map, the War Chief hierarchy changes, so you'll come back to essentially a rebuilt, more powerful Sauron's army. :D

Oh man, I met a captain and his intro was just him staring at me with a very creepy giggle. Gave me the goosebumps.

I got one similar to that as well. He came up on me by himself too, no entourage or anything. I handed him his ass pretty easily but I'm hoping he survived and will come back creepier than ever.

This game, abeit being serious and violent, is hilarious at times. One of the best moments so far was when I was hunting Dush the Slasher, one of the war chiefs. When you fight a chief, the orcs start chanting the chief's name. Throughout the whole intro, all I heard was "Douche! Douche! Douche!"

That being said, I'm getting more used to the combat system and learning how to approach situations. Now that I've killed all the war chiefs besides
Ratbag
, I guess I should go ahead and do the third story mission.

This game looks amazing and plays amazing but the lack of a great plot just killed it for me.

Sure, it was alright but nowhere near what they could have done with the LOTR material.

Anyone else experience this or am I just an old bitter cynic?

Well guys, I still have to red a sum up of what this Nemesis system really is.For now I only read that the orcs you kill come back with a greater level and so do the ones you kill. Then, its the same to kill one or not right?.But that's all?.

By all means, add me on PSN if you are in need of sweet sweet vengeance.
PSN:Krappadizzle
Steam:Krappadizzle

The games mechanics and systems are so damn compelling.

I may be the exception but I don't care about stories in games at all. If the story is great, I consider it a plus. But most of the time, I'm more interested in game mechanics and how it all fits together as an experience to play.

So do you guys feel like this game has a lot of replayability?
If you don't ever get tired of travelling between Warchief camps and slaughtering the enemies there, sure.

There's also some time trial things available from the main menu that save stats to leaderboards for competition, and they're pretty fun too.

Once you max out on runes and skills though, you're pretty overpowered, and just about everything in the game is easy mode.

I have a few friends playing this and I heard talks about them being able to kill one of the Captains that killed me in their game or something...? how does this work exactly...?I see no online multiplayer stuff in game.

Gotta play more to test, but performing executions on captains when the icon over their head is green has always resulted in decaps based on the few hours I've played. If you're able to down a captain (stars over his head) and perform the ground finisher they should be vulnerable for an execution move.

This game is a hell of a lot of fun, I rushed into battle a few many times and this diseased bastard has grown to level 17 thanks to him seemingly always being around. Gonna jump in tonight and get my sweet revenge. Nemesis really is a game changer

LOL! I love that guy! He's my first nemesis! We was going back and forth with the killings. He is immune to almost every attack and I had to find some fire. I lured him to a nice fire camp and let loose.. He then hunted me down and killed me again.. I finally tracked him and killed him.. No decaps though, so he might come back at some point.. what a blast! I love the shit-talking!

That's the multiplayer part of the game. Your friends can get revenge missions when someone kills you in your game.

I envy you.

I'm 29 and have been playing vidya since the very beginning so I've pretty much seen it all.

It's like being immortal and having nothing in life that interests you anymore.

Ignorance is bliss.

Same here. Most can't tell a worthwhile story to save their lives. Never mind the fact that pacing is about impossible in a game like this. Mechanics are king. The rest is secondary.

So a few minutes ago I decided to hunt a captain, set his marker on the map, then stealthily took out half of an uruk fortress without being detected before I realized I had gone the wrong way... so I got on a roof, shot down 2 caragor bait things, and just watched them massacre all the other orcs. Then continued on to my target. Good times.

Also, on one of the missions where you have to poison the grog while being completely undetected, just release the caragors in the camp. They'll kill all the orcs, and it doesn't matter if the caragors spot you.

Yeah, the guy was a joke. He had The Handsom as his title. Met another dude shortly after who was similar, didn't say a word, just looked at me with a grin and then he chomped his teeth lightly.

Ah ok cool,so if he dies in his game, while I am playing also in mine,I should get a new mission prompt in my game and an icon on the map pointing to that guy that killed him ?...only when we are both playing though I guess...?

Asking again, is there any way to clear a strong hold area or am I always going to be getting swarmed by mutltiple captains and their lackeys there?

My guy is only weak to ranged attacks...im sure I can handle him, he just tends to show up with his poisoned club when I'm fighting off a crowd. I picked up a bow rune last night that refills elve shots with successful headshots, tonight he'll never see me coming.

Would love more vengeance missions! My PSN is Moneyman232.

That's actually EXACTLY where I'm at.
I killed all the war chiefs and just finished the first Outcast mission.

I'm like, 17 hours in and apparently have about 23% of the game 'done.'

Has/can anyone comment on the size of the open world? I watched part of Giant Bomb's quick look and the map didn't look all that large, but I don't know how the map translates to size in the actual game. Any comparisons?

I don't believe the strongholds are able to be cleared, at least I remember a couple posters saying that here...

Wow, not a fan of this game at all. Now I will admit I always thought it looked shit from the start, but it really is yet another exercise in bland modern game-design imo (for some reason they copied Ubisoft's open-world approach, which is just the worst thing to do).

It's just another icon chaser with very shallow mechanics that you can break within minutes of playing the game. I've just played for a full hour and I'm pretty sure I've seen everything the game has to offer, it's gonna get super repetitive fast I bet. The world feels very limited and copy/paste; there's very little cohesiveness and overall there's just very little to draw me in. I will give it another chance tomorrow, but my first impressions are not good.

Definitely returning it, I tried going in with an open mind and I didn't follow the game at all since its first reveal, but I was still curious to see how an open-world LotR game would fare. I have a feeling my opinion is gonna be the minority (Wolfenstein TNO all over again), but I just don't see the appeal of this homogenous modern game-design.
This is literally impossible. Have you looked at the skill tree yet? Every single one of those is a new ability (most of which are button presses that do something unique) for you to use in the game. Do some story missions and unlock new stuff or just pick a captain to kill and use your imagination. There is vast potential for making your own fun in this game.

My personal favorite way is to sneak up onto the roofs and take out all of the archers, than attract a pack of caragors(shoot the bait hanging down or break open the cages by shooting the door) and let them run loose in the fort. Without the archers, the orcs stand very little chance against them.

Also, if your target is afraid of something, you can use that and let him run out of the fort. I just followed a captain about half a mile as he was running full speed away from the fort, shot him in the leg with an arrow, then walked up and casually decapitated him.

Just in case some of you haven't gathered from my posts here, the caragors are my main weapon of attack- pretty effective against orcs and they are a great distraction for stealth kills.

I never liked Assassin creed (or at least lets say I always get bored halfway and never finish it)

Should I buy this game or not, does it have enough elements to keep me interested till the end?

Can you actually play the game after the initial download on ps4? or is it one of those games that you can only check out the menus? I just realized that in the 4 hours since I bought it that it only downloaded 3 of 4gb, let alone the rest of the game

No idea why PSN is slow for me -- wired on a fast internet connection. XBL works fine

Guess I just need a better plan of attack. Not many of my nemeses have fears.

I just want to say that there is some of the finest voice acting I've ever heard in a video game in a long time. Then again, I shouldn't expect anything less of Troy Baker and Alastair Duncan, absolutely top talent for this incredible game.

As a Tolkien fan, I am really loving the story so far and the attention to detail in the world, it is really nice to see Mordor before it becomes that twisted blasted landscape that everyone is familiar with.

Can't believe I've put close to 25ish hours and I've only done like 7 main missions, I've just been screwing around with the Nemesis System and sidequests the entire time.

I'm at a really frustrating point in the game. I have to kill two more chieftains and they're both in strongholds. By the time they're low on health in surrounded and fucked.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Found the challenge itself quite manageable though.

Yea toughest part of the challenge was having three general's randomly showing up mid archery that messed me up.

Challenge itself is super easy if you have built up focus and arrows a bit on the skilltree. Even without(I did it before any upgrades) I also found it manageable keeping to the extreme edges inside the tent where not every archer has visibility.

Wow, just got Brand so I'm playing around with it. I found a captain with 6 minions/bodyguards standing with him. They're all standing pretty close to a cliff, so I chilled at the edge and branded each of his crew one by one. My goal was to get the captain weak and kill of some of his crew. The captain managed to take out a few of his guys, but one guy pretty much one shot the captain with a spear to the face, I was blown away. Unfortunately, my branded minion did not take the captain's spot.

My first couple of hours have been Yakety Sax: The Game. I find a captain, become outnumbered and then get chased into another captain and his mates. It's great! Very satisfying to check an enemy off the hitlist. Also saw a captain get mauled to death by a caragor, which was cool. What wasn't cool was the same caragor killing the slave I was trying to rescue right afterwards.

Doing side missions is practice in frustration. Killed too many captains? Cool. Now when you try to kill others 5 of the fucking guys you already killed will show up and help them.

Same here, and tbh I'm kind of sad to see, that like Far Cry 3 and Black Flag before it, this game has schyzophrenia between open/systemic and story missions.

So apparently I'm free to roam the world and engage in the nemesis system and captain assassination, BUT I have to progress in the story missions to get the Brand ability (which is like half the fun of the damn nemesis system), and same goes for a lot of other abilities.

So I'm free to explore and play around for however long I want, but if I want to get all the cool toys I also have to THEN, at some point, get around to doing the story stuff. It's especially annoying when they turn out to be heavily cutscene-ified introductions to features I discovered for myself 2 hours ago by, you know, playing in the world :/

Still, love the game, but dammit I long for the day when a big open world game like this has the balls to entirely detach abilities unlock etc from story missions, or at least mixes both in a way that isn't "schyzophrenic". But I guess SoM already had a lot of balls going for itself with the nemesis system and the whole creation of the franchise from the ground up, so maybe in SoM 2 ? :p

Still no details on the Xbox One's resolution and fps?

You do know that ALL games are displayed at 1080p, right? Just kidding... Certain sites that are less than reputable are saying 900/30fps locked on XB1 and 1080p/30 fps variable on PS4. The site I saw this on is
Gearnuke
.

We'll have to wait on Digital Foundry for the lowdown. For once though it seems most are enjoying the game enough that the uproar is over any differences is small. A good thing.
