Underrated SNES Games

Games on the SNES you find underrated. I am sure there are tons of hidden gems on the SNES, though i can't really say i played too many SNES games *i grown up with PS2 and PS1*

*Also tell if a game you mention is on the VC. don't ask me about anything since i do not know how many games are on the VC*

Ball Bullet Gun, an awesome (but really hard) tactical game.

(Sorry for the image size, couldn't easily find better and I'm at work :/)

I really enjoyed the following as a kid:

The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse
Goof Troop (not great, but it was fun for a kid)
Captain America and the Avengers

Secret of Evermore by far, I personally found it to be far better than Mana and yet everyone else seemed to glance over it. Amazing soundtrack, setting and it improved upon Mana's battle system.

Kazunori Yamauchi's (yeah) Skyblazer is one of those unsung heroes of the library. I was pretty neutral on it initially, but it has grown on me.

An Under rated SNES game that I found and enjoyed is Live-A-Live, an Japanese only title made by Squaresoft(before it became SquareEnix) which came out in 1994, the same year for FF3/6 came out, which is mixture of a RPG/Strat. game with its battle system(one of the most unique RPG battle systems for the SNES, in which you move in a grid and have to choose where to be at on the grid to have your attacks to come out, and also how to avoid getting hit by your enemies.

The story has eight different story arcs to it, with stories like: A caveman saving his woman, kung fu master trying to find a worthy pupil, ninja trying to assassinate a emporor, two cowboys trying to save a town from bandits, an cyberpunk mecha story, an wrestling trying to become the best in the world, 2001 a space odyssey type story, and a story tying all it all together.

It never came out in english, but there is a fan translation patch that translated all the game into english, but I do believe there are minor translation errors for what I know. So, if you want to play it, you would need to find a copy of the game, dump the rom, and apply the patch to play it.

Also there is are a couple downside to the game, the graphic suck on it(It was the same year that FF3/6 came out) and it shows that they didn't put enough time with the graphics at all, and some of the stories are not that good for the arcs, and the battle system is very weird to get uses to at first. Also, you WILL need a guide for it because the translation messed up some parts of the game, so you won't be able to figure how to advance without one, just letting you know.

But, it has some amazing stuff to it, the battle system is the most amazing thing I have seen in a SNES RPG game, and some of the story arcs are amazing, and the ninja assassin story arc is amazing, with you can fight every single enemy in the story or try an Metal Gear Solid approach to it and avoid killing as much enemies as possible to it, and make the game more of a challenge because you will low level trying to beat the final boss in the story so, you can make a challenge mode for that story.

Also, it has some amazing boss music that I love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1Nmc84Noos

Live-A-Live is an amazing under rated title!

That's the game with the dog, that was made by an American development team isn't it?

This a thousand times.

The game is generous, pretty varied and sometimes gorgeous.

Apart from one horrible level (and obviously it's an underwater labyrinth), this game is not that far from perfection for a 16-bit platformer.

Goof Troop (not great, but it was fun for a kid)

It did lead to one of the best Game Grump LP's though.

My pick:

SpawnBoxShotSNES.jpg

Really good beat 'em up with fighting game-styled special moves. It also features comic-style cut scenes ala Maximum Carnage. A solid 8 out of 10 beat 'em up.

I'd say Plok

though I don't think it's really underrated seeing as it's often mentioned on GAF

I need to go back to that game. I started playing it two years ago and then stopped after the first two hours. But what I played was pretty good.

I think I played it. A friend had it, I believe. I can only remember a bit from it, though.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4. This kept me and my friends occupied all summer. You could have up to 12 players on one controller. Everybody takes turns building up their towns, making alliances, having battles, getting weapons for your generals, making duels, etc.. I've played a few of the ROTK games after 4 but I never liked them as much.

You get to play all these cool different scenarios like the old west or as a robot in a space ship

edit, beaten

how about FEDA: The Emblem of Justice

it is like shining force

Also I've always had a soft spot for Bahumut Lagoon.

The best thing about the game was that you could change the environment with spells. You rarely see that with strategy rpg games. Being able to make a bridge by casting a freeze spell on a river was really cool.

I'd love to know if the game someone recommends is available on VC. If it's not too much trouble, can I ask you to include this in the OP? Thank you, and this is a thread I am excited to read!

I had a ton of fun with The Firemen, a quality game. The sequel hasn't grabbed me yet (I can't read Japanese) I bought it a few months ago on my vita.

I want to play LiveALive :(

- Romance of the Three Kingdoms III
- Gemfire
- Robotrek

These three come to mind. Great games that never get mentioned in RPG/Strategy games.

-E.V.O. Search For Eden, which is basically an evolution RPG.

-Soul Blazer, which reminds me of a 2D Dark Cloud.

-DoReMi Fantasy, a beautiful platformer that I'm pretty sure didn't get an official American release.

-WeaponLord, a 2D fighter with weapon-based combat that's deeper than many fighting games today.

That's all I can think of right now.

A lot of people recognize this games' quality, but it's almost never mentioned by anyone, so I consider it to be underrated. Easily one of the best action/RPG's I've ever played in my life.

That would be my pick as well. I really like it.The alchemy system and the combats were fun and the story was decent too.

E.V.O. is such a great game. I still have mine from when I was a kid. It's pretty pricey nowdays.

at last, for christ's sake
Phantom 2040 was really underrated, a B-tier Super Metroid with good graphics and good music

Sink or Swim.

It's like a puzzle platform game where you save sailors from drowning as water rises and floods the level.

That box art is atrocious, but the game itself looks / sounds pretty cool.

Bahamut Lagoon. My second favorite SRPG on the system, after Tactics Ogre. (Okay, maybe tied with Front Mission)
