Underrated SNES Games

The unreleased sequel to Smartball / Jerry Boy is even better. It's a shame Sony canceled it for competitive reasons (it was basically complete when they did) or just didn't port it to PlayStation.

It's also worth playing the fantraslation of Jerry Boy 1 considering almost all the storyline was cut for Smartball.

What were the sales total for each of these games? They must have been in the hundreds? In the SNES days, even great selling games weren't selling that much.

True, but the install base was much more profitable with little to no competition from SEGA.

Ogre Battle was mentioned in this thread, and they only manufactured 25K copies of the game. I think that's the minimum print run for a SNES title.

That would make sense, having such minimum production run. That would also explain the reticence of publishers to go with N64 carts.

As for my favourite underrated game, it would be this one. The music alone is worth it.

Such an amazing point and click cyberpunk RPG

I've finished Shadowrun SNES at least 4 times. I love it.

-E.V.O. Search For Eden, which is basically an evolution RPG.

-Soul Blazer, which reminds me of a 2D Dark Cloud.

-DoReMi Fantasy, a beautiful platformer that I'm pretty sure didn't get an official American release.

-WeaponLord, a 2D fighter with weapon-based combat that's deeper than many fighting games today.

That's all I can think of right now.

Your taste is top fucking notch!

Terranigma and Seiken Densetsu 3 were my favourite games ever.

I loved this game. Outside of the stupid password system, it was gold. Looked good, lengthy singleplayer campaign (about 50 tracks), many car customizations/upgrades, and that soundtrack.

I'm going to have to go with Biker Mice From Mars. I remember being very surprised by this after renting it once with a friend. Kind of like Rock n' Roll Racing. But with mice.

It's an addictive physics based platformer -- yep physics based on SNES -- with level design comparable to DK 94 (minus the keys, but with warps and multiple exits). You use the fishing pole, Spiderman-web style to grapple your way around the stage, but the controls definitely have a learning curve.

You have to time when you reel in the line and give yourself more line to dangle further. The physics feel very bungee-cord like, but accurate. Plus, there's some cool music.

Also, Super Buster Bros is known, but largely never talked about for some reason. Fun game though.

I don't know how I forgot these other great games that took up lots of time in my childhood:

Cool Spot
Sunset Riders
Hook
Dino City
The Lost Vikings

Judge Dredd. Am I the only one who liked this game?

Oof, I hated this game

Try the Amiga version (or the unreleased Genesis sequel). They're very different games, but I much prefer them to the original. Mr. Nutz: Hoppin Mad (the Amiga Title) plays a lot like Mario meets Sonic.

Super Adventure Island 2

I loved this one, unlike the other AI games this is more of an adventure-platformer with RPG elements, really similar to Zelda 2. I think it's also on VC.

Isn't Takahashi Meijin no Boken Jima IV (the last Famicom release) a Metroid-like? That one was a departure from the formula too. We never got that one in the states but the fan translation is Adventure Island IV.

Yup, and it's really good. Not on par with wonderboy, but still very good in it's own right.

how about FEDA: The Emblem of Justice

it is like shining force

Holy SHIT! I thought I'm the only person who played this game! IMO, I thought FEDA was a way better game than Shining Force because the way the alignment system works; it affects what character you get depending on your alignment. Also, I loved that it wasn't always kill all of the enemies every single time. The only thing I didn't like about the game is how the fan-translation had to make the dialogue "Working Design"-esque. It was so cringe-worthy how a random pop culture from the early 2000s was thrown in there.

Anyway, to be on-topic: I choose

This add-on hardware and associated games were unbeatable back in those days.

They were unbeatable, alright, but on another system. Bomberman 94 on the PC Engine with a 5-player multitap is greatness. People profess love for Saturn Bomberman with it's 10-player mode and online play, but I still think Bomberman 94 was the best game in the series.

From what I can gather, this game was widely panned but I absolutely think it has one of the finest 16 bit soundtracks.

It had one of those just throw them into the fire without telling them shit manuals.

When you got a party of 6+ moving around it got pretty fun. Also permadeath.

I remember seeing the first demo to the 10 player (or was it 16) on that giant screen in Japan and feeling so damn jealous there was that special version of Bomberman made for it. This should be in the arcades, I'd take my son down weekly to play it.

That actually ran on a legitimate high definition screen. in 1994. On a PC Engine.

I would kill for that to resurface on the after market.

Oh I know. I was just joking. Luckily I started years ago when prices were still somewhat reasonable for most games. But there are still many I want to get and yeah, I get a lot of Japanese versions these days because of the prices.

For my money, one of the best action games on the platform. I don't know how underrated it is, but I don't see it brought up nearly as much as it should be. It's basically Mega Man with RPG elements, sprawling non-linear levels, and gorgeously macabre art design.

Really enjoyed this game; Super Bowling-

Never owned it, but I would regularly rent it from Blockbuster.

Also, not sure if technically 'underrated', but I loved the SNES version of Populous.

Not only was it the first SNES box I ever saw in person, but it was probably the first sim I ever played. Although droning, I really like the constant wind blowing, heartbeat, and ambient music.

Bummed that the US never got Populous 2 for the SNES. :/
