Did anyone get details about performance on the PS4 version? I will be getting it regardless but it'd be nice to know.

Not yet, but a GAF'er posted about an hour and a half ago they had their hands on the PS4 version, and we know the game is being sold early in Italy, so I guess we'll be getting some word on that soon.

Hey all. We just finished putting something together that answers many of your questions. Per this thread, you'll want to take note of this one.

What's the status on the game's framerate and aspect ratio?

Shinji Mikami and the team at Tango designed The Evil Within to be played at 30fps and to utilize an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 for all platforms. The team has worked the last four years perfecting the game experience with these settings in mind. For PC players, we’ll provide debug commands on how you can alter the framerate and aspect ratio, but these commands and changes are not recommended or supported and we suggest everyone play the game as it was designed and intended for the best experience.

I’ve played through the game and I’ve also seen the game played at 60fps on a PC powerful enough to handle it. It looks great, but personally it didn't look right to me. I felt like I was seeing a "soap opera effect" and that took away from the atmosphere and feel that I think the default setting captures.

Poor overworked Bethesda!

Per usual, the coverup is worse than the crime. Just admit the frame rate is capped at 30 because of の理由.

edit: Domo arigato!

Thanks for the response! It is greatly appreciated. Now we know.

Can't wait to play this, but I won't be able to till after next week. I guess that's what weekends are for! Just have to hope I can dodge spoilers.

Finally some good answer. Soap Opera Effect? Picture just runs smoothly^^ That's all. We will see if there are odd things happening (like in DS2).

So will it be easy to unlock the fps or will it take some modding? Seems like Bethesda still wants to force 30fps.

And on a 60Hz monitor or better I doubt there's a soap opera effect.

Here we go again with the cinematic experience. Let us decide what kind of experience we want. Thanks for the update though.

Oh, boy, not this again. The dreaded "soap opera effect". (which is people just not being used to 60 fps fluidity). That means absolutely nothing.

eidt: Unless the animations are actually played double speed. Huge difference though.

Shouldn't be too much of an issue.

How can I turn on the debug console?

There will be a command-line option to enable the console. More at launch.

I'll personally be playing on PS4 and 30 fps is more than fine by me. The game looks great. Thanks.

I'm fine with 60 fps games. Seeing this game in 60 fps did not feel right to me after completing it (full disclosure: I played through the first time on PS3). All the power to folks that want to try it out. \

I'll post the commands on Tuesday and people can check it out. That being said, I'd encourage you to try playing the game at 30 before making the change.

Ugh. TEW facebook page recently posted some pretty spoilerific photos. I should avoid the whole damn internet until I finish the game.

Really? well if you're on media blackout then yeah but otherwise those are all old pics.

Edit: At least from what i see, or maybe i have to like the page to see the new pics?

Did you try turning off the letterboxing? If so, how did that affect the game or your experience?

New screens are being posted each day there. Stay clear if you don't want to see anymore.

Note: Content from today's screens are included in other videos that have gone out.

Honestly, I really dig the letterboxing and it's never been a thing for me. My plasma has really good blacks, so i'm not noticing it much.

That being said, above and below the bars we display content - save status, subtitles, etc. If you're disabling bars and manipulating the game to go full screen (on an extra wide display), you'd have to disable that content and play the game without getting the information it provides. Like the 60 FPS part, it's not a supported option.

Understandable. I'm personally fine with letterboxing. I have a plasma as well and I'll be playing this on PS4, but I'm merely curious on how some of the debug changes affect the game is all. Thanks for answering.

it's not supported but will it run ok @ 60fps? The game won't run twice as fast, that sort of thing?

Not sure what format to pick out of 360, PS3 or my ageing i5/560ti combo PC!

PC would usually be a no brainer but the requirements have scared me off a little.

for some reason I thuoght that IDTECH 5 was only capable of running at 60fps. I would like it be 60 but I can live with 30. as long as its a solid 30 and doesnt franatically dip.

Yep, after RE5 got spoiled for me back when, I just go on full lockdown around the time of release. For Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us last year, I was completely off the internet until I finished them, lol.

Im sure the devs working 90 hour weeks in crunch time just adore making games for people who say things like this.

Thanks for the replies Gstaff.

So the game functions acceptably at 60 FPS? Animations aren't sped up for example? What issues can we expect?

I kind of just want the PS4 version instead of Steam. Is there any way to get a Steam refund for a game you were gifted? Even if it is just steam bucks that go in your wallet?

Just got my PS4 back after having to send it in for repair twice and losing it for about a month. Keep the impressions coming, sounds great so far!

Well, I think I'm going to stick with it on console in that case. If it was designed with a goal of 30fps, I'd rather build the console library- I'm sure it'll run way better on PC, but mine is starting to age.
