Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

I realize this has probably been answered but in regards to the improved 3d, did it also get rid of all the ghosting? (Even when I'm in the sweet spot I can occasionally see parts of a ghost image, especially if there it a plain colored background.) Either way I'll probably upgrade from a regular 3ds to a new XL.

You can quickly open it while having the charger plugged in at the top... Honestly I don't know who uses the cradle. You saying " I prefer being able to actually use the 3DS while it is charging" makes me believe you did not know you can play with the cord plugged into the system itself, that will solve all your problems

I have a friend who always plays his 3DS in the cradle. He even came to my apartment once and he pulled out his cradle to use while we were playing Mario Kart. I never asked him why he does that. It's pretty odd.

I'm not sure how to answer this because what you're describing is the break-up of the 3D effect, which is kind of a fundamental potential problem with the 3DS. This can happen for any number of reasons when you're playing. The 3DS outputs two images (one for each eye) and the phenomenon you're describing is what happens when your eyes aren't able to fully combine them together. This can happen for any number of reasons: the action is scrolling too fast relative to the framerate, the game is throwing more fields of depth at you than your brain can understand, glare on the screen (which can confuse your eyes' perception of the depth of the game images), too much flat color (depth of field gets lost in flat unchanging colors), and, mostly commonly, the viewing angle of the 3DS relative to your eyes being non-optimal.

The new 3DS has one specific improvement in this regard: it uses eye tracking to adjust the 3D output relative to your eye position. This should make it somewhat easier to hit the 3D "sweet spot". Hands-on impressions have commented very positively on this feature.

Also, one can't discuss 3D on the 3DS without mentioning the 3D slider. As I listed above, the 3D effect can break-up for any number of reasons. Lowering the 3D slider reduces the 3D effect by making the two images outputted by the 3DS more similar to each other, and thus making it easier for your eyes to combine them. This is a catch-all solution. I use 3D all the time and, unfortunately, is not uncommon to have to adjust the 3D on the fly in some games to keep the effect working properly.

I hope this was somewhat helpful. I didn't know exactly what starting point you were coming from in asking the question so I tried to be comprehensive.

What he's describing is crosstalk, which has nothing to do with the brain not being able to comprehend something (it can be captured with cameras). It's a limitation of the parallax barrier 3D technology and happens whenever there's high contrast like a bright image next to a dark background. The light from the bright image leaks through the dark image for the other eye and creates what looks like ghosting. Head/eye tracking won't change this so I highly doubt it's been fixed on the n3DS but someone else can confirm.

Yup, that's exactly what I was trying to describe. Didn't know what it was so I just figured I was a little off from the sweet spot. (I figured I couldn't notice it else where because a more "complex" screen would effectively hide it.)

Wow, very interesting.

I've definitely noticed that but I misunderstood what it was. Your explanation makes perfect sense.

Yeah I'd love to hear impressions of how well the 3D works now, the solution is something I was going on about before the original even released, I'm surprised they finally went and did it.
edit: I should probably look in the impressions thread, too many threads!

The only stereoscopic tech that is 100% crosstalk-free are HMDs with separate screens for each eye. All other tech (the 3DS parallax barrier included) work by masking/filtering light and some of it will always bleed through.

I should start linking the youtube videos I watched, but one owner says the eye tracking function works great. It allows normal 3D usage quite a bit to the left and right. It seems to respond rather quickly as well. During system setup, it shows the system tracking the user's head, and in the video, it seemed to respond very well.

As for crosstalk, it would require quite a bit of compromise to eliminate this. I think it isn't terribly bad on the current models, especially if you can hide it by keeping the 3D slider at around half.

So I picked up my Monster Hunter 4G Limited Edition *New* Nintendo 3DS LL this morning from FedEx. Also ordered a charging cradle, 32GB microSD and got a free LL/XL carrying case from PlayAsia (for ordering a system).

Haven't fired up the system just yet, so no impressions just yet. Have it charging before I do a system transfer in a little while from my old LL

That MH XL really does look fantastic, I understand why they made the XLs glossy this time around.

Any comments on the Dpad? Could you compare it to the old XL's?

I read its basically the same as the old XL. Which is fine imo, the 3DS XL dpad is good.

is there going to be a way to transfer the data from an old 3ds to the new 3ds?
There's been a system transfer since forever in the Settings menu. It's easy to do. Nintendo posted a step-by-step instructional video on YT for it too, I believe.

Oh Nice I thought you needed an SD card to transfer but it's through wifi so I guess there's no problem.

I would strongly recommend just copying over the bare minimum (licences) via the transfer procedure and using a PC to copy the data from SD to SD.

otherwise it could take anywhere up to 6 hours (seriously). Sending all the SD data across is a herculean task for the OG 3DS' shitty hardware

So do the transfer without the SD cards inserted?

wait I can't put the sd card in the new 3ds since it only supports micro SD !!??

I'm confused...

Of course you can't. You would need to get a micro SD card and transfer the information onto that one from the original SD. They're dirt cheap right now - if you're in the UK, amazon are selling 32GB Samsung Micro SD cards for £11.

So do the transfer without the SD cards inserted?

Nah, it gives you options on what to transfer.

Ooooh, that explains a lot. I always thought I was missing the sweet spot when that happened.

$399.99 from Play Asia for the LL!?!?!? Isn't that a little high?

Any thoughts on US price?

This is not only a limited edition system but it was a bundle which included a physical copy of the game. But yeah, PlayAsia does overcharge more often than not. However, for their impeccable shipping and customer service, I'll overpay any day

There is no hard limit to streetpass on any of the systems. Are you referring to Mii Plaza? That is a software limit on that particular app.

For example, Pokemon can have 99 streetpasses, Fire Emblem 50, Smash Bros 12, and Mario 3D Land only 3.

Would appreciate it if more people could post some Resident Evil Demo + C stick impressions.

And some more Dpad impressions ;)

Is there a chance the new 3DS won't come to America or has it already been confirmed that its coming?
It's coming, I think it's been stated for 2015 launch.
Wish it would come out before holidays of this year-_- want to buy a 3ds but don't want to commit to an old system with this coming.

Has anyone had an opportunity to test netflix out on the new 3ds yet? Performance is terrible on current 3ds, so much so that it's nearly unusable.

You should pick up an XL now, then trade it in at gamestop for like a hundred bucks off the new model. You'll better appreciate the magic of the new system this way

As mentioned, if you want one, get one. It will cost you about $80 out of pocket in the long run. You'd prefer to wait until potentially March/April? There are too many good games.

This is what I did. Just got a used XL for $125, gonna trade it in for an n3DS at launch.
