NPD Sales Results for September 2014 [Up1: Smash/HW/MK8, Destiny stats, 3DS HW]

Good sales for the PS4, although if it did sell 550k+ units that would be higher than most people's predictions which concerns me a bit. While selling this fast is good for Sony it also means the PS4 market will be saturated much faster. Just like how it broke records at launch but after the hype died down, sales crashed and it sold under 200k for much of the year.

Thinking more about this it's really similar to the Wii vs. 360 situation. The Wii started off cheaper and more popular, but eventually everyone got one and lost interest. The 360 eventually caught up in America even though the Wii was routinely outselling it 4-to-1 in 2008.

Right now the One has more room to cut price (cheaper parts and bigger war chest) which means it'll eventually be cheaper, and its big hitters like Halo 5 and Gears are still to come.

The PS4 is doing great now but there's no way it'll be able to sustain this kind of momentum. I'm curious to see how the two consoles perform in 2016.

Better valued bundles from MS are tempting, but I'm also already a PS+ subscriber so PS4 might be the better value in the long run.

Most of us knew the PS4 was going to sell great in September. None of us that I saw thought the Destiny would sell better on X1 in any metric.

What's more is, every single person that bought a PS4 over an X1 in Sept is just one person that's going to bring their friends over. Thid is why I feel Destiny was vital for Sony in beginning to get momentum really going as they head into Holidays. They will even every month this year as easily as supply allows

I think there'll be a 2 million difference in the US between the two consoles at least, by the end of 2014. It may be a little early to say that, but that's what I'm feeling right now after the performance this month. Momentum is really strong, and the coming months should continue to be great. I'm really interested to see what Microsoft plans to do in terms of promotions and offers. It's the biggest quarter of the year. It's time for most of that budget to be spent, and it's pretty clear they're going to be doing a huge push.

Hmmmm .. man that would be shocking to me.

PS4 will be a hot ticket item for sure, especially with the upcoming GTAV marketing and bundling, along with the family friendly LBP3, but mannnn ... outselling the X1 by a cool million even with the MCC bundles?

That would really cause meltdowns.

One thing is clear though, the PS4 is doing what it is doing right now with, lets be honest, pretty much a trickle of the software that is coming to it in 2015. And mega-blockbuster type software in 2015 at that.

2015 software + $299 price tag come holiday season? Forget about it.

This will just make MS work even harder, and as an Xbox owner I'm really pleased with their output so far.

On the other hand, I worry that Sony is going to be more complacent, they're clearly winning with hardware numbers, but I seen nothing that I want to play in the pipeline that's exclusive to them, likely because they're heavily relying on third-parties to carry them through.

It is not hard to see that there was more of a push for the physical version of Destiny on the XBO than on the PS4.

There was no incentive for new (non-bundle buyers) or existing console owners to buy the physical version of Destiny over the digital version. Not to mention that was a big push by Sony with the digital version of Destiny.

On the XBO there was an incentive to buy(or rather receive for free) the physical version of Destiny over the digital version for new console owners during launch week. These new console owners on the XBO could count for as much as 100k or more; which could had been more than enough to put the standalone XBO version of Destiny over the PS4 on NPD.

You are suggesting a 100k xbone week?

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I am waiting to see how they do in 2018...I mean 2016 is just too soon to tell.

If the gap in september is 200k+, they have to drop the price for November.

$349 with game(s?). It would be absolutely crazy but it's possible.

Wonder if the masses want the white Sunset Overdrive bundle like they wanted the white Destiny bundle.

Lol there is no way that is happening.

Seems like this month was more than 200K or around 200K. Next month sales will dip but then November and December are the heavy hitters. We have no idea what Sony and MS will do for the holiday season but I suspect a GTA5 bundle is being prepped by SCEA. No point to announce it until closer to release. At the right price point this could be massive and sell alongside a Destiny bundle which could see an uptick with a price decrease. I'm thinking $399 for both bundles during the holiday season.

wait what, in total sales? when did x1 even break 7 million systems sold?
I thought the ps4 was ahead of x1 by a couple million, like by at least 5?

NPD covers USA only where the sales are close. Worldwide yeah the PS4 is dominating.

Didn't Verendus state the PS4/XB1 gap is almost one million now? Figure out the gap through August 2014 and then we should have a XB1 estimate.

Sony posters never see a storm coming. That's why the PSP and Vita came second despite being predicted otherwise on Gaf. They see hype with one eye and post with the other.

Sony had 2 consoles that passed 100m, if there is a company that can maintain the dominance its Sony.

over 500k this month, or "best month in 2014"

obviously that didn't happen though, so lol

Nah, it would be easy PR (slightly slimey)

Biggest month of the year for the XB1, and Destiny sold best on XB1 according to NPD.

No, they'd announce they'd sold over 500k. See, it wasn't that difficult.

The problem for Microsoft is that no matter how much they don't want it to be true, the XB1's success will always be in relation to the PS4. Just look at how their previous PR spins have gone over. Remember "Fastest selling console" anyone?

Although given all that, I don't think the XB1 got that close to the PS4's September sales. There was just to much pent up demand and preorder sales of the Destiny bundle for the XB1 to have a chance.

Most of us knew the PS4 was going to sell great in September. None of us that I saw thought the Destiny would sell better on X1 in any metric.

With digital not counting and bundles being left out you can't give that XBO number any real weight.

It's cool for console warriors to use as ammo but anyone with a real grasp on the situation knows what's happenig there.

By no means am I discoutning the great sales of Destiny on XBO either I think it's awesome.

It's just crazy that 6 of my friends bought digital on PS4 and that isn't counting.

And the market apparently doesn't see anything they want to play in the pipeline from xbox.

Or you just aren't interested in their lineup. Every 1st party studio is working on something, I don't see anything showing this complacency.

This is an NPD thread, so normally any numbers are just from the U.S.

The gap was roughly 700k in August. I would guess it's over 900k by the end of September, and very close to a million right now.

Sure, raw power is key now that your favourite is winning. No way buddy, multiplats sold high on Wii in generations past. Multiplats is the base but not the flavour.

HAH! No multiplats sold best on 360 the vast majority of the time. You know why? Two reasons: Better performance and higher install base. Guess which console has both of those going for it this time: PS4. I refuse to believe anyone is dense enough to believe that 3rd party Multiplats are not the main draw for the majority of the mainstream user base. There is a reason the biggest sellers year after year are multiplatform releases. Mainstream customers buy them in droves. How you can claim multiplats sold best on Wii is just beyond me. That did not happen. Factually, you are wrong.

Wow at Destiny X1 beating PS4 in sales. Like, this is only NA, but that's still crazy. I thought PS4 would take it for sure.

I wonder what the actual systems sales numbers are, I imagine Destiny's PS4 bundle toppled the X1+ free game giveaway, or perhaps it just sold more due to sales momentum outside of Destiny.
