Halo |OT 20| It really does feel like Halo

They tried very hard to, in so many words, say that there are loadouts but they're not necessarily loadouts. Also, they're calling them weapon sets.

Sounds familiar...

"They're not perks, guys!"

They said loadouts can be disabled which is fine for customs but did they mention whether or not they were enabled for matchmaking?

That's as far as his goofiness has gone this stream.

I would play CE and H2 at a friend's place as I didn't have an Xbox, so I missed the glory days. But I bought a 360 solely for Halo 3. It blew me away then, and it still impresses me now. Different strokes, I suppose.
Same but most likely reason is because I never played halo 2. This reminds me of the ferrari f40 vs f50 argument, sure f50 looks prettier but there isnt much difference considering the age gap and most actually prefer f40
If it was a video thing then that's a lot of effort. No need. And of course they were hesitant.

And to answer rrcc. Quinn (while a decent guy) threw jabs at the competitive halo community more than once and had a hand in helping design Gears Judgement's "modernized" multiplayer. So again take Dev words with a spoon of sodium.

I genuinely like the people at 343. Just not some of their ideas on what is "Halo".
Ok im officially even more worried about halo 5 now, gears judgement was the halo reach/4 of the franchise, it destroyed everything. To this day I refuse to play that piece of shit

If they ever release a PC FPS Halo, should we expect an upgraded forge? Even better, cross platform forge file sharing?

Imagine the possibilities...

Literally everything you just mentioned can be gleaned with actual game awareness and *better* with death cams, not to mention in real time. What's the point of a callout when you apparently need to wait 3 seconds to figure it out?

Isn't the killcam just a nutural evolution of Halo 3's theatre mode, which Bungie promoted, among other things, as the means to see how you died and who killed you?

I kind of like how fast halo CE and halo 2 classic load up in the collection, it's like a ce multi map loads up in 6 or so seconds, will be a nice quick option when I don't have too long to play between work.

I still am 100% convinced there will be sprint in Halo 5. I know people gave me shit for using this as evidence but:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqrC0-_QG9A

There's no way you can pull off half that shit without sprint, let alone the sprinting spartans in the beginning. If they really didn't have sprint they would be touting it. Unless 343 actually managed to keep Halo gameplay in tact while speeding up the gameplay/having thrusters WITHOUT ruining Halo with sprint, then I'm pretty sure we would have heard it mentioned. Just think we should all just suck it up and deal with the fact that Halo 5 will have sprint. There's no way they take it out with all this modernization for the sake of modernization.

(also toggle is not an excuse)

I want Halo 5 to reignite the Halo community more than I want a new Banjo game... But some of the comments from Max really, really make me doubt (Man, how "off" is that guy with some of the decisions he's made). Not to sound like a negative nancy all the time because I'm really not, I fucking love Halo and the MCC is a love-letter to fans and myself, I just have concerns they don't really factor in what really makes Halo "Halo".

That teaser raised WAY more questions than it answered. In that regard it probably works as a marketing piece.

At the end of the day, however, it's still a CGI representation of a video game which is months (or at that time a full year) away from being finalized. They show a BR without a scope and everyone was quick to say "weapon customization is in" when that could just as easily have been a rendering artists choice because the scope "didn't look right".

Nope ads/scope customization confirmed :p

But in all seriousness, everything in that trailer meant something. Why else would they choose to show off Spartan abilities and then show a few new movement/thruster moves, clearly what we see is probably what were gonna get, imo.

343 Head: "Hey guys, we want you to make the trailer for our Multiplayer Beta that will be shown at E3. Here are the models from a build that just got done. Don't mess anything up."

CG Team: "Got it boss!"

CG Guy #1: "Hey, I don't like the way this scope looks, or the number 36. Lets get rid of the scope, and make the number my favorite, 72. No one should care or notice."

They intentionally showed us a BR with no scope. If it was a rendering artist getting artsy, then he is most likely fired.

  • They're not loadouts, they're weapon sets!
  • What kill-cam? It clearly says H-cam!
  • It's not sprint, it's enhanced run speed!
  • They're not color filters and bland maps, just a new palette to try something different since all the other games have those pesky bright colors! Well, except Halo 4 where we did the exact same thing and got criticized for it, so we've just doubled down on it this time.
  • It's not a horribly inconsistent mechanic that introduces randomness and takes away player skill, it's bloom!
  • We're not shifting the focus away from core mechanics to focus on new players, we're merely filling the screen with pointless medal spam that makes every useless player feel like a special snowflake every time they sneeze on the controller! The gigantic "CAPTURE HERE" and "DEFEND THIS" and "YES, THIS IS IN FACT YOUR FLAG" text on the screen at all times couldn't possibly be viewed as annoying by players who know what they're doing!
  • All of your complaints are invalid since you can just change things in Forge or turn them off if you don't like them! Of course, that's all irrelevant if you intend on playing matchmaking, and there's no custom games browser, and the original clan functionality which people used to easily organize and find custom games is gone, but still!

I know your being overly harsh, but your 100% right. Kinda sucks. I get that they need to attract a new audience used to playing CoD, but at what cost?

Wish someone would at least acknowledge we have valid complaints and concerns (because we love this franchise).

I usually try to have some tact and not be overly harsh, but it's all really just getting irritating. There's this rhetoric that Halo isn't straying from its roots and that we all have nothing to worry about, but we keep seeing things that disagree with that. Plus I guess I'm still skeptical from the Halo 2 days where there were multiple times where what Bungie told us was just flat out wrong.

My other issue is that even when you're polite and try to have some reasonable discourse about issues, any sort of criticism seems to get written off as "being a hater" or "negative" or whatever. There seems to be a certain subset of fans who feel that being a fan means blindly agreeing with every design decision and having unwavering support for everything at all times. As if it's somehow impossible to both love the franchise and have concerns and be upset about things.

Halo needs to evolve and aside from a few things i like the direction that 343i went for
and this comes from someone that regards Halo CE as the one true Halo, im pretty hardcore in that regard

sprint certainly was a good addition to Halo, it makes the slow paced gameplay a lot faster, something which is highly necessary after games like Halo 3 where you could go for making some coffee during an encounter as the killtimes where that high
if the map is well adjusted to the distance you can cover with sprint, this definitely will be benefitial for Halo, as its titles lately went away from its formerly large and open maps (CE) to some random chaos close combat as in guardian or countdown, in which melee is king

if you want a game to be successfull you need to adapt to the current way shooters are made
while that doesnt mean you have to copy games like CoD or BF, its at least worth a look to see what makes those games successfull and how well some of their features would work in Halo
and im sure theres quite a bunch that would help Halo to claim the console shooter throne again

so overall id love to see 343i continuing to bring in new features, they are in a way necessary to guarantee high sales and therefore get the AAA investment back

on a sidenote, if you would ask me what makes Halo a Halo game, itll be
- fast killtimes
- no ironsights
- moderate to low recoil
- open maps with just very very few vehicles (no BTB Tank/Banshee/Railgun-Hog crap)
- fast strafing and gameplay
- hitboxes that match the size of the player model
- grenades that deserve their name
- no melee lunge/warp

so basically nothing that H2, H3 or any other game after HCE was, therefore i welcome any change that 343i brings in that moves Halo away from what it was in its last titles
this doesnt mean i didnt enjoy the last Halo titles, i really loved playing Reach or H4 as those started to set a new trend within the series :)

We still melting down over a killcam? Ok.

NTHWT2W.gif
Not so much about the killcam itself, but a lot of the changes as a whole. Killcam in Halo 2 Anniversary definitely inspired the conversation though. A lot of us weren't fans of the direction Halo 4 took. Judging by how the population crashed in that game, it would suggest that the changes made didn't succeed in bringing in and retaining players from other games, either. So not only is it disappointing to see those changes applied to Halo 2 Anniversary, it's worrying for Halo 5.

Nope, we are just being elitist. When we bring up these issues.
Yep - I brought this up a few pages back when Frankie said he was leaving due to it. It's not necessarily "elitism" to be concerned about how the series is trying to cater to new players. It's not that we don't want new people playing the game, quite the contrary, really.

I want there to be new players, I want a new generation of Halo fans - all of that translates to a higher player population and a better chance of me being able to easily get matches and have a Halo game that lasts for years again. But it's worrying if some of the means of attracting new players seem misguided and may even do so at the expense of the integrity and originality of the game and/or the expense of non-new players.

They tried attracting the CoD audience with 4, looked how that turned out. The more 343 tries to appeal to CoD players, the more they turn away Halo players.

And seriously, where did 343 look to see who wanted killcams in Halo, the CoD forums? I still call BS on that.

I think the issue here, folks, is that people have been complaining that Halo is not staying true to itself since Halo 2 came out. So-called Halo "purists" have talked shit about any Halo game that wasn't Halo CE, and with each subsequent Halo game you add more people to that list ("Well Halo 3 is killing the franchise because it isn't staying true to what Halo CE was," etc.). Yeah, yeah, we all got bit in the ass with Halo 4 but I really don't think anyone is hating on anyone for having an opinion on what Halo should be, it's more that people have grown tired of the "Halo is dead/becoming CoD/BF/insertgamehere" that we've (those of us that have played since CE launched) heard every single time a new piece of media comes out for the new Halo game.

I heard it back in 2004, again in 2007, 2010, and so on. The first time it actually had merit was prior to Halo 4, but Halo 4 was based on Reach, and both games did change the franchise a lot, and some of those changes were made to attempt to keep the game relevant to newer gamers. Also Halo 4 was 343i's first game ever, and they quickly learned that the fanbase knows what makes a good Halo game and will call you out when you do it wrong. (insert sarcastic KyleJ comment here).

Anywho, to the point, people aren't getting sarcastic and sometimes hostile because of differing opinions, most are getting that way because it's been the same thing since right before Halo 2 launched, just in different forms. Both sides have valid opinions, and keeping Halo relevant in 2014 is no easy task when so many gamers are swayed by Call of Duty, Destiny, Battlefield, Team Fortress, and a myriad of other shooters that all play differently than Halo does.

I'm just glad we have discussion here on both sides, and that we have 343i represented to, at the very least, glance over our (sometimes ridiculous) posts, opinions, and arguments. Many Halo communities just argue these things with no hope of them ever being seen. I'd like to think our Halo 4 feedback sunk in at some level with 343, and that Halo 5 will be a better game because of it. Only time will tell.

whats so bad about killcams?
is it that its a CoD related feature?
cause most complaints about killcams kinda make it look like that
"we are Halo fans and CoD is evil" kind of mentality

killcams dont hurt anyone, they help weaker players to understand how they got killed and adapt to that
eg how to throw nades in certain situations, what weapons are good and the position of the other guy and why there might be an advantage by being there
or just how to move and shoot in general

its probably the most educational thing that modern shooters have
i know some people hate it to see how they got killed, but honestly, that cannot be the point why killcams are bad, i mean just skip it or dont watch it
personally ive been killed quite a lot in moments, where i was like "wait, how did that just happen?"
and the killcam lets me understand that and adapt to it for the next time

id really would like to hear what killcams do add as negative points to Halo, cause imo theres more positive than negative

I think it's safe to say at this point I'm fully hyped.

Now, to get some proper surround sound headphones to enjoy some Haloes.

Any recommendation? I don't want cheap but I also don't want to spent a silly amount. Got to be some decent middle ground?

If you're still following- I just bought a Turtle Beach DSS on eBay for $10. it plugs into your Xbox via optical audio cable and you just plug your usual headphones in it. Works pretty well, and it's certainly inexpensive. If you don't have over ear headphones, there's plently of resources for finding inexpensive ones.
The caveat is that you won't have a mic. Solutions with surround sound and mic for Xbox One get a bit more expensive, so I just use the headset adapter on the controller when I need to talk. It's not simulated surround, but stereo is good enough in most instances.

As of the past five years or so, I play more CoD than I do Halo. Maybe even longer than that. So it's definitely not that CoD is evil.

There's a handful of issues with the killcams. The first of which being is that they're a direct lift out of Call of Duty and come across as a short-sighted attempt to lure over CoD players. They contribute to the "genericization" of Halo, where the franchise is changing itself to be more and more like other popular games, rather than embracing its own uniqueness as one of the last popular arena shooters.

Next, they reveal too much information to the player who died. You shouldn't be rewarded and coddled because you've been killed, and the player who killed you shouldn't have their strategy, weapons, and location compromised.

As it was, you were given the ability to spectate your teammates, which is a decent compromise. That allows you to get an idea of what situations your teammates are in, where they are, and how you should plan on moving when you spawn. Killcams take away from that team mentality and move the focus to your own death.

Halo doesn't need killcams. The previous system, spectate teammates, is good enough. Hell, i like it better, i don't care to relive my death when i could spend the time watching what my team is doing, and thus have a plan of action by the time i respawn.

Killcams promote grudges, i think, though that may be just me.

Killcams reward players for being bad. Which in turn keeps, doesn't help them become a better player.

Death cams when they zone in on the general direction of your killer is the best way to go like old times.

no im not saying lets punish those who suck, thats cruel and may steer them away

I'm not too bent out of shape about Killcams, but they just don't feel like they belong in Halo in my subjective opinion. I've always preferred the out of body experience camera where you can pick out where you were killed from or watch your body fly up into the air due to an explosion.

Edit- What Madness said below me is pretty spot on. The third person camera from the older games is just generally better from an information standpoint. I just hope they are turned off by default for matchmaking.
The probably wont be.

Madness

Member
I just dislike killcams because 99.9% of the time, I know how or why I died. I'd rather have more situational awareness in that I can rotate camera around my body, see after death action, or even switch to a teammate and watch his third person view rather than killcam. Sometimes the deaths in Halo are garbage and some are things like kills from beyond the grave. Don't really need to see that footage.

They aren't really needed, in my opinion. Hopefully they can be turned off. The big question they should always ask themselves when designing these games is, is this needed, is this something that works better than what is currently there. Halo has much higher team coordination, map control, weapon control than Call of Duty, does it make sense to see that some guy killed you 5 seconds ago in this hallway, or that he killed you in this hallway and is still there teabagging your body so you can tell your team, 2 shots on my X.

That's ultimately another thing, it removes teabagging in a sense, and it's probably something they discussed that angers a lot of Halo players. I still get messages at times from babby tryhards because I teabagged them after a kill. But that's Halo to me.

How about (in the case of non-instant spawns) "press X" to skip killcam and jump to old-school deathcam/team cams?

Random thought. Just looking at it from gameplay videos, I'm not sure if I like Bloodline? I'll obviously hold off my full opinion until I actually play it but I'm kind of worried that they're over-complicating a simple formula by adding in some of the stuff they added in.

I like this but switch it around. Make the kill cam the optional thing and let the death cam that was in place first be the default.

I'll reserve judgment as well, but I seem to recall a similar criticism of Coagulation circa 2004 compared to Blood Gultch, when ultimately I felt like it played slightly better in general. OG Blood Gultch was way too open for players to be able to deal with the god-pistol, snipers and scorpion tanks (typically all at once).
