I would add:

Valiant Hearts (adventure)
Star Realms (card game)
Talisman (boardgame)

And the strategy/grognard top dogs:
Panzer Corps (strategy)
Drive on Moscow (strategy)
Desert Fox (strategy)

Are all 2014?
I think some title are 2013, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: they aren't all 2014...so I would add too:

Carcassonne
Elder Sign Omens
Lost Cities
Tiny Thief
Hitman GO

It's obviously missing like 10000000 games (as would any iOS list of great games), but I don't see Hearthstone, which is a pretty great example of a F2P game done right (no real pressure to buy things, and F2P with real gameplay not just some tap a building to collect coins every 4 hours).

Ha, yeah, that's for sure. I was just going by my purchase history and more recent releases so I definitely missed a lot of good stuff

How's this for a title?

Having a lot of fun with Shadowrun Returns, it's like a mix of Fallout and a cyberpunk point and click. Hopefully that Dragonfall campaign comes out in November like they were talking about.

Unfortunately my iPad Air 2 got delayed so instead of getting here Friday it won't be here until tomorrow. The one time UPS doesn't come through for me. Will probably pick up Banner Saga and maybe a few others when it does show up.

Finally got The Last Rocket. Really charming and fun, but I really wish there was a level select. Game can be pretty challenging, a big emphasis on timing your jumps

Good list More_Badass. Just looking through some more recent purchases and thought these were good enough to make the cut:

Table Tennis Touch (Arcade/Sports)
Traps N Gemstones (Adventure)
Dojo Master (Platformers)
Tail Spin (Racing)
Pixel Boat Racing (Racing)
Counter Spy (Action)
Adventure Beaks (Platformers)
Shades (Puzzle)
Fotonica (Puzzle/Platformer)
Swap Heroes (Strategy)
Bloo Kid 2 (Platformers)

And even though it is rough with the translation, I'm having a blast with Ghost Blade (Action/Adventure).

Since you're going back further, I'm sure there's many more. Maybe some of the Cave shmups. Gene Effect (Adventure). Ms Splosion Man (Platformers). Tentacles: Enter the Dolphin (Arcade/Adventure/Action).

Geez. I could probably keep going and going but you have a lot of it on your list.

It's always cool to find your dad playing an IOS game. He's hooked on Into The Dead now

Anyway, redownloaded it last night so I might as well post a recommendation. If you enjoy precision platformers, you should definitely check out Mini Dash.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mini-dash/id562183045
It's up there with 14px and Commander Pixman as my favorite precision platformers. Over 100 levels, colorful graphics, a speedrunner with varied hazards and tight controls

Mini Dash is my favorite Super Meat Boy style game on iOS, and it even add their own mechanics to make it different and in the same level of awesome. For a buck, doesnt get more instant buy than that for iOS tough as nails platforming.

Another game I been really enjoying is Splot, and here is something I found that sums it up pretty good:

Splot has reportedly been in development for seven years, which is something that is surprising and revealing in equal measure when you start playing. For a game that was conceptualised in the early days of the platformer resurgence, it feels remarkably fresh – rather than the typical speed-running gameplay, your time-based opponent is physical. You race to complete stylish levels against a “ghost racer”-esque foe whilst picking up as many collectibles as possible. It may sound familiar but Splot’s long development cycle was obviously put to good use making the movement incredibly fluid, satisfying and intuitive resulting in one of my better purchases of the year.

Some SeaBeard imps I posted on TA:

Ugh... This game. I want to love it so much, but it wants me to hate it, so so badly.

This game just doesn't work. It's monetization scheme feels inappropriate. Making a very Nintendo-inspired game that has gross F2P elements just flat out does not work.

The game's charm is just completely gutted by the freemium stuff. Every time I take a quest and I'm told to go to another island, I don't look forward to it. I don't want to travel to the other areas and enjoy the world. I just think about the game plotting against me so I run out of energy.

And quite frankly I'll never buy any of the ridiculously expensive costumes unless the game forces me to blow my cash on them again.

I understand that F2P gives you a far better chance of making a profit, but please, I beg of you, at least add a Premium IAP, I'll pay $8 easily. It's insulting the way it is right now, as if it's saying I'm stupid to be looking for a pure experience like this on iOS. I might as well just boot up zelda or animal crossing on my 3DS than to fight to have to enjoy this.

If I buy coins, do the ads go away in Retry? If not, I'm deleting this shit.
It's a great game, but I can't stand full screen pop up ads (with a delayed X button no less)

I'm really disappointed that Apple didn't have some big IOS game release ready for the Iphone 6 release.

Where is this year's Infinity Blade, Apple?

Well they showed off Vain Glory at the event. I've actually played a little bit of the game and it does feel like a moba specifically made for mobile. Only got to play two games(was on friends tablet) but the game felt very tactic-heavy for what I had played.

I don't know if it's Metal, but Submerged looks like it could be this year's visual showcase for IOS.

Edit: well, early 2015

I've been loving Pixel Boat Rush. Cool take on Tiny Wings style mechanic and lots of content in the form of races/cups, boats, and upgrades.

That reminds me, Paint It Black should be on the list. It's a really well-made picross game, and I got my aunt (who usually sticks to sudoku-likes) hooked on it. It's free with an IAP to unlock a ton more content, and that's also implemented really well.

Ascension, while already mentioned, should definitely be on any best-of list, especially this year. It was going to always be on my device even after they stopped supporting it and shut down the servers, but Stone Blade realized the mistake they were making by ditching Playdek, and did the right thing. Now we have a couple new expansions, and it's nearly caught up with the physical version.

The more I play and love XCOM: Enemy Unknown on PC... the more I wish I could play it on my phone :p That's a purchase that is likely bound to happen.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

I am loving the crap out of Retry. I'm confused about doing loop de loops, though. I can't seem to actually get any to count on the counter! Am I just crazy and playing it wrong?

OMG first strike is so awesome. I spent my whole sunday playing that game. It's been awhile since a game really catch my attention.

The late game kinda suffers though. When you are covering a larger landmass, it is such a hassle to micro manage everything. Does anyone have any tips regarding that?

Gotta give more love to Ghost Blade. If you like games like Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry, I think it's by far the best in the genre on iOS (including the DMC game).

So many different attacks and it just gets better and better with magic being added into the mix as well.

Best action game I've played on iOS in a long while.

Haven't played on my iPhone this much since... well, forever.

So I bought iPhone 6 Plus and I've started playing Wayward Souls, Oceanhorn and Final Fantasy IV...

HOLY SHIT EVERYTHING IS SO CLEAN, SMOOTH AND BEAUTIFUL!!!

It's coming out next year, so I'll just assume that the finished game will look better. Maybe

Just figured since that trailer was obviously meant to wow look at what mobile can do now in all directions why they missed something so obvious. Especially since judging by the name water will have a big part in the narrative.

I tried Ridiculous Fishing on my 5S today. What's with the framerate? The game's not smooth at all.
Hmm, I thought it was 60fps on 5s?

Just popping in to say I just upgraded from a 4S to a 5S, and I can't get over how much snappier it is. Still plugging away at Sky Force (been playing since August), and it runs soooo much nicer now.

My iPhone has officially replaced my dedicated handhelds, which now sit dead in my nightstand drawer.

I expected it to be, but it definitely isn't.

Vlambeer doesn't care about their users and as soon as they launch their new game they dont care about their previous ones at all. Super Crate Box was never updated for the i5 and Ridiculous Fishing never got that promised update planned for last year... they just dont care about their users as soon as they release their new game. Pretty bad PR in my opinion.

I'll be optimistic and say that perhaps they've been focused on Nuclear Throne.

Ok, but cant they just take a few days off and update their previous games to at least work well and that they are adapted to the new screens? I was making a game before (need a mac to complete it) and that took me five minutes to adapt it to the iPhone 5 resolution, and I have no knowledge at all compared to Vlambeer... I think they dont care, plain and simple. If they did, they would have taken a day off to do this.
