It should really just be a fucking cutscene, is all.

Or not. QTEs are a great way to interact with a game during a cinematic. Whether it's being able to move the camera around during a cutscene, testing hand-eye coordination mid-cutscene, or something as simple as pushing F to pay respects. I don't see anything wrong with QTEs.

At first I didn't understand why people found this thing so funny, but now it seems like it's only because QTEs are a frowned-upon mechanic? Is that right? Otherwise I still don't understand why this is blowing up.

It's not the fact it's a QTE it's just the way it's used. If you don't find it funny I don't know how to explain it.

But it's hilarious.

I think it's mainly because there's nothing remotely interesting about pressing a single button or key during a cutscene to make your character do something utterly pointless that the player has absolutely zero investment in.

And then in the video that someone just posted, once you "pay respects" you actually gain a level meaning that during this supposedly heartfelt funeral you pay your respects followed by that franchise-recurring electronic guitar vomit.

Lol. I'm pretty sure someone doctored in that level gain and music....

Ah damnit now I ruined it for everyone who would have fallen for it :(

Its a bunch of things

1) game is up its own ass
2) turning "paying respects" into an objective that must be completed
3) putting a big emotional endeavor on a single key press
4) the phrase "press f to pay respects" could have just not existed. They could have the characters look at you, give you some type of indication that it's your turn to act, then let you walk up and press the action button. Or just "press f to continue" would have been better.

It makes what is supposed to be a somber heartfelt moment and turns it into something almost comical by adding the prompt. "Press f to feel sad" as someone else put it. It's corny, and unnecessary.

Edit: That gif is perfect.

Now I'm picturing Gordon Freeman flicking his flashlight on and off in the middle of a funeral.*

I've read this entire topic. I have no idea how something as completely unremarkable as a quick time event in a video game could be as blown out of proportion as it has in this thread.

This isn't remotely funny.

This thread exists precisely because it's sad, not because it's funny.
