iOS Gaming November 2014: GLORIOUS!™

I'm in a TOTAL MEDIA BLACKOUT about Sailor's Dream.

I do not want to know anything.

I just want to curl in bed with headphones and get lost in the magic.

Simogo earned this with Year Walk and Device 6.
I must admit my sin... I still have not played any of them. So remind me, is Simogo one of the developers who has essentially said no sales ever? If so, I may go ahead and grab Year Walk this afternoon to start with.

Just checked Appshopper, none of their recent games (Beat Sneak Bandit, Year Walk, Device 6) have ever been on sale

Here's a nice interview with the folks at Simogo about Sailor's Dream
http://killscreendaily.com/articles/chat-simogos-simon-flesser-about-their-new-sailors-dream/
No specific or spoilery details, more about the mindset and design rationale behind the game

Nope, game is awesome. I love it. It's incredibly addicting
So addicting. I love how hectic the racing is. The randomized levels mean you can only rely on your skills rather than memorizing track layouts

Be sure to tune in tonight everyone. Lol.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Sailor's Dream is now live!

I haven't had my iPad long, but the quality of Simogo's games have amazed me. They remind me of Nintendo DS-era Cing games.

Broken Sword: Director's Cut and Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror Remastered are on sale from $5 down to $1. That's a steal for these great full-length adventure games. They haven't been optimized for iPhone 6 but still look good on the bigger screens. I'd link to them but iTunes is buggy at the moment.

Also it seems Square-Enix have updated some of their games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy to work better with iOS8 but didn't optimize for iPhone 6.

I'm looking for a game to play, I've been playing the hell out of Real Racing 3 and now I want something new. I never played any of the Final Fantasy games prior to 7 so any recommendations for one of those? I pretty much want a RPG along the lines of FF. I tried to redownload Eternal Legacy but it doesn't run on my phone. Also interested in Oceanhorn. I have a 6+ btw if that matters. Thanks!

Might want to check on what FF games have been optimized for the 6+. Not sure if SE has optimized any of them, but also make sure they run on iOS 8 as I know there's a few of their titles that don't (and they state so at the top of their description).

Anyway, aside from the actual FF games, the Chaos Rings series is good. Also Square-Enix, so same warnings as above apply.

Sailor's Dream is only 7.0 and up? My 5 touch is still on 6.0.1, and I don't think I can give up the ~6GB that the update would take up on what's primarily my mp3 player. It kills me, but I think I'll need to pass on Sailor's Dream (and a lot of other stuff). ;_;

Ok, so i've got enough cash in my iTunes account to get Year Walk, Device 6 and Sailor's Dream, but I wouldn't be able to afford anything else after that apart from a couple of buck apps. Worth purchasing those 3 though?

Already GLORIOUS, Simogo hits it out of the park again. Definitely not "game-y" like Device 6 and Year Walk, but it's already a wonderful experience.

40 minutes in. Hmm, Sailor's Dream isn't a game. It's not a text adventure. It's something...new, different. It's a narrative told in a way that could never be accomplished by a book, a story delivered piece-meal, in tantalizing parts. An experience that blends audio and visuals and the tactile nature of touch screen to establish a mood, create an atmosphere.

Interesting, there seems to be an optimized for iphone 6 iphone 6+ label in the supported devices for apps now.

makes it easier to find certain things.

Few devs in the world can express like Simogo does.

Be SURE to use the button you see in every description....it's like the companion app in Year Walk.

BRILLIANT.

Exactly what I was expecting, an interactive story. I know I'm the minority here, but I think it's a shame Simogo is moving in this direction more and more with each release when they are capable of developing brilliant gameplay focused games like Beat Sneak Bandit.

Edit:
Sailor's Dream got a 4/5 at Toucharcade and 7/10 at Pocketgamer.

I think this screenshot is even more impressive... soon enough we will be on par with consoles and they won't be able to look down on this GLORIOUS gaming system.

Frostbite is not only the heart of the Battlefield games on PC and console – it’s also pushing technical boundaries on mobile. Kristoffer Benjaminsson, Product Owner Mobile at Frostbite, tells you about the team’s greatest mobile challenge yet – getting parts of Battlefield 4 running on iOS.

Frostbite is known for being cutting edge. Everything from rendering to destruction to the scale of our worlds is constantly pushing the boundaries for video games. Highly detailed and dynamic environments are key pillars to any Frostbite game – and mobile is no difference. Whatever you can do on console should be doable on mobile as well!

The Frostbite engine has already explored mobile gaming with the Battlefield 4 Commander App, and at the Apple WWDC event earlier this year we showcased a Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare tech demo running on an iPad Air. 1.3 million triangles showing up on screen simultaneously showed what the engine was capable of.

The next step? We wanted to get parts of Battlefield 4 running on iOS.

It has been quite a challenge. To handle dynamic features such as destruction or moving light sources, most things in the Frostbite engine happen in realtime. This puts extra demand on performance to be able to deliver large, highly detailed worlds with superb visual quality. We were making great progress feature-wise, but hardware and software limitations forced us to either scale down the number of objects and their complexity to retain visual fidelity, or accept lower visual fidelity to cope with a larger number of objects.

This all changed when Apple introduced Metal, their new low-level graphics API, which allowed us to make full use of the hardware. Together with the latest range of hardware, Metal has created possibilities previously out of reach and for the first time we can include both high visual fidelity and a large number of objects.

So to see exactly how far we could take the engine on mobile we set ourselves up for a real challenge: getting selected parts of the Battlefield 4 – truly a visually demanding game – running on iOS! I want to stress that this has been a tech demo to test the engine capabilities, and nothing else.

There is still much to do, but we’re very happy with the results so far. It’s a great feeling porting a system, get it running, and discover that there’s actually performance left. Even though we have much room for performance improvements on our end, we’re pleasantly surprised of the performance we’re getting from the hardware.

We’ll wait for future posts to dig into more details about this, but we are ready to share some screenshots of our work in progress. We hope you find them as exciting as we do.

Until next time!

LOL just watched the South Park episode and they described the freemium players so well any freemium lover will feel bad with themselves after watching this. Ouch. Feel bad for them now. But it can help them realize the kind of shit freemium players are in and get out of there before they are fully consumed. They also described the model pretty well, with the timers and such stuff. Also the Canadian devil was hilarious, especially when fighting the real demon. LOL.

The AV Club review made a good point. I wonder how many times Matt and Trey have been approached to make some F2P South Park game. We have one for The Simpsons and Family guy.

Instead we got the absolutely awesome South Park RPG, The Stick of Truth.

They probably have standards and a mother not like other people who sold their soul to the Canadian devil LOL. I heard great things about the South Park RPG, great things about it, sadly is only on PS3 and PC so I cant play it... also read interviews where they despised the freemium model. From those people I buy games with pleasure....

-----------------------------

Yesterday I bought Day of the Viking, the latest game from AdultSwim, makers of M.A.M.C., one of the greatest games of all time. I was playing nice, with a normal difficulty curve until I reached level 5. On level 5, you are meeted with two new barriers that take a lot hits to destroy them (I haven't been able to destroy one even if I only hit it without dying right after that), and on top of that, there is a much harder wave of enemies than on the previous level... I would say that about a three quarters harder and faster, like a horde. So, I have to destroy wall and soldiers with a low upgraded archer and boulder. So I am supposed to destroy the barriers and the enemies at the same time, impossible at the current level, with only 2 archers and a steady boulder (upgraded all the basic stuff once). Its just plain impossible and really frustrating to see this thing on the first set of levels, makes me wonder what kind trappings I will find later on... really frustrating.

Sometimes people just aren't as good at games as they think to, don't forgot that possibility. Or it could just be a bug. Plenty of people screamed foul at Kingdom Rush for having the consumables in the levels (or Plants vs Zombies 2), that they were impossible to beat, but yet, there are youtube videos of the levels being won without even using the hero as a crutch like many players will. Same for match-3 games, I've seen people say they're unfair and personally almost never have any troubles.

I simply enjoy a game while it's fun, and move on when it isn't. I don't really care what the game has in it, if it's free, I'll try it and if I enjoy it, play it until I don't. I don't spend money until I've gotten what I feel is a full game out of it, and even then only if I really, really like it and the IAPs are fair.

That said you could be perfectly correct, and it could be one of those games designed specifically to be impossible and exploit players, so a warning is appreciated. Even then, if it's free, and you enjoy it for a couple of hours and then drop it, no harm. But when it costs money upfront, then it's definitely good to be warned what is in store.

I'm still enjoying the crap out of Retry, I highly recommend it.
Don't let the Rovio name put you off, this has more in common with VVVVVV than it does with Angry Birds. The idea of selling checkpoints with hard currency is inspired, and I've never played a 'runner' with so much control over the craft. It has amazing use of uplift based upon the plane's angle.

I haven't yet had the F2P design bite me in the ass, but I wonder how it will be when I get into the next area of the game.

@Minsc I also play games to have fun, to escape from the daily routine of work, stress and evade myself into something fun and immersive. But when that joy is turned the opposite way because someone sold their soul to the Canadian devil and they ruin your fun time, its frustrating. And this is happening with more and more games. And more and more recently. And its even worse when it happens on paid games. I consider myself to be good at most games. And I have the ability to find the exploit really quick (as I am being told constantly by my friends). But I am bad at text book adventures or games like Machinarium or the old DiscWorld 1 and 2 point and click adventures, where I had to look at a guide for almost the entire game (but I love them both by the way).

@Everyone: Lately I found out about users that register with a normal names but they are commercials working for companies, so they camouflage among the normal users to reel you in, make a friend and then sell their game. Horrible method for honest people like me. So I wonder.... If you are a regular GAF member, someone who genuinely likes games and its not affiliated with any developer and are not driven by some dark force to sell games on this thread, please say AYE. So I know you are not trying to sell me anything but good will. Please.

Not exactly sure what you're talking about, Frost. Shills? That's nothing new. Actually, really haven't seen much of that in the IOS forums. Some devs will just do some drive-by press release post, but the majority are personable and honest.

Yep, that thing. I am running a shop now and its surprising how many commercials come in and lure you with conversation only to later on try to sell you something. I am actually a bit shocked. And its happening everywhere. As we become aware of their method they include new ones that are even more devious than before. Only to sell their soul to the Canadian devil (this gave me a lot of gas lol xD). Or maybe I am way too sensible about this and I dont fit in this modern world anymore where greed, lust, envy and pride are the new Gods to bow to. Hmmmm I can't lie or sell anything to someone that would be bad for them. I have morals and standards. Maybe those people didnt have an education. Maybe their parents didnt teach them well or were lacking education themselves to be able to teach others. Lol and I run a business... God (the real one) please help me.

So if I had to list them:
1) Device 6
2) Beat Sneak Bandit
3) Year Walk
4) The Sailor's Dream

Now that's not to say that Sailor's Dream is bad, because it's not. It's beautiful and atmospheric and compelling. It just didn't wow me like Simogo's other games did. As someone who feels the video games medium has so much potential and promise, experiencing this innovative take on narrative was wonderful. The same way that House of Leaves played with the literary medium to tell its story, The Sailor's Dream is a look into the future of storytelling, embracing the strengths of touch screens and mobile devices to deliver a tale in a way that couldn't work in any other medium

But Simogo's best is still Device 6 IMO. The use of text there was just absolutely genius and the puzzles made you feel like a genius.

Know i asked about Simogo a week or two ago, then got distracted by other games and knew Sailor's Dream was also coming. But I think this seals it.

I shall start my journey with Device 6 and hope I am genius enough to figure the puzzles out.

Just realized that NOON is from the devs of Quell. It's simple but really addictive, kind of like Gauge in that aspect. Stop the clock at noon. That's it. But it's not so simple when you have multiple clocks, spinning at different speeds and the noon marker is at different positions on each one
