iOS Gaming November 2014: GLORIOUS!™

I would like to give a different view on Sailor's Dream, even if I obviously didn't complete it yet and I promised myself not talking about the game before completing it fearing spoilers.

So far I'm loving it as much as I loved Year Walk and Device 6 (I loved Beat Sneak Bandit too, but it's different).

It is giving me the same feelings and emotions of the other two games....my mind is thinking about the game when driving work or not playing it.
And when I'm actually playing it, I'm totally immersed and the only thing I care about is finding out the story, understanding everything, seeing and experiencing 'where' all that took place in first place.
Playing a Simogo game to me is like visiting an ancient place where something big took place...like visiting the set of a favorite and mysterious movie before you see the movie (I'm not native English so maybe some concepts aren't that clear, sorry for that).
It's stimulating my mind in the very same manner.
It maybe won't have puzzles or platforming sessions, I won't shoot anything nor will my reflexes be at test....but I'm enjoying it the same way.
And to be honest...all this 'lack of puzzles' talk...I dunno....usually in a Simogo game everything is there for a reason.
So I spent a good half an hour touching musical cords, moving planets and such, trying to understand how they fit in the grand scheme (and this was fun even if there wasn't a 3 star screen telling me I 'solved' it)...not to mention writing down the time I was playing because I'm convinced that some parts are different if you visit them at other times.
Not to mention I'll input the coordinate of the various dream to see if there is a meaning....and so on....

All that gets me involved in the 'game', and gives me fun...as much as it did in Device 6 (where I found initially the puzzles just stops in the game flow only to discover how perfectly they explain those in the end) and Year Walk (where the companion app was the best thing in the game).

Just my 2 cents...if you liked previous Simogo games for those same reasons, chances are you will love Sailor's Dream too.

Back dreaming.

Yesterday I bought Day of the Viking, the latest game from AdultSwim, makers of M.A.M.C., one of the greatest games of all time. I was playing nice, with a normal difficulty curve until I reached level 5. On level 5, you are meeted with two new barriers that take a lot hits to destroy them (I haven't been able to destroy one even if I only hit it without dying right after that), and on top of that, there is a much harder wave of enemies than on the previous level... I would say that about a three quarters harder and faster, like a horde. So, I have to destroy wall and soldiers with a low upgraded archer and boulder. So I am supposed to destroy the barriers and the enemies at the same time, impossible at the current level, with only 2 archers and a steady boulder (upgraded all the basic stuff once). Its just plain impossible and really frustrating to see this thing on the first set of levels, makes me wonder what kind trappings I will find later on... really frustrating.

It is not impossible. What it's doing is encouraging you to vary up your play style (and no, you don't need to buy any IAP or boosters to pass it). The barriers can be destroyed if you want - but, the way to play is to fire boulders so they arc just over them to smash the caches of vikings that'll cluster together there. Then, if you end up missing any you can pick them off with arrows as they approach your castle stronghold.

If you run into a roadblock like this again, definitely try a different approach. Granted, at a certain point (at least for me) when there are vikings at the gate it becomes a mad rush - but, pretty certain you could do everything here without buying any boosters and following a normal upgrade path attainable without spending any extra money.

This is sort of what I meant when I posted earlier. Sometimes you just don't realize you're not doing what you need to.

I did a quick youtube search and found this video as well, and right here is showing Assault 5 being cleared with no troubles at all as far as I can. Hardly the sky is falling complaint posted earlier, unless I'm mistaken.

It's easy to jump the gun and say "IAP! IAP! F2P! F2P! F2P! IAP!" etc (I do it too occasionally), but sometimes you are actually having troubles that a lot of other people might not, because you're not experimenting or trying a different strategy or whatever.

Maybe it's bad design if a player gets stuck. Or maybe it's good that the game is challenging and forces you to try different solutions to a problem. I generally lean towards the latter.

But Simogo's best is still Device 6 IMO. The use of text there was just absolutely genius and the puzzles made you feel like a genius.

Urgh. I really need to give Device 6 another try. I got completely stuck on the very first person, and I wasted a long time trying to figure it out. It didn't make me feel like a genius, because I didn't even yet know how the game worked. I should probably find a walkthrough and play this way.

For reference, I played through any greatly enjoyed The Room, and I remember greatly disliking Cosmo Spin from Simogo.

Does it matter which device you play it on? I played on iPad mini 2, but I have an iPhone 5s too which might be more appropriate.

I played on an iPhone 5, and I think with all the device turning and flipping you need to do, a smaller device and screen works better.

I think(?) I completed Sailors Dream but I don't know.
I've been fiddling with the constellation things for a while now and I can't seem to solve it. Is it even a puzzle?

Overall, I think I will agree that Device 6 is a little higher than SD but that is definitely not saying it is a bad game. To me, the puzzle aspect of D6 was simply brilliant. All the puzzles were lateral thinking puzzles that made your jaw drop when you finally solve it and realize the answer was right in front of you the whole time.

Strangely enough, I do agree with TA's review that having a more open story telling will little obstacles can bring down the narrative as a whole. I liked the linearity of D6 a little bit better.

Fair enough. I tried this approach. Works better now. Still havent found a good way to fling the rock but I have to improve it, even upgraded the distance. I shouldn't have pointed to IAP so quickly but personally, I am really burned on that. Sorry. One legit thing that popped up is that when the ball hits the ground it doesn't seem like a huge rock hits the ground. I would suggest adding something to make the impact more visible, like a little shake -not too much it would be too distracting- or dust lifting or something like that to make it stand out a little more.

I did a quick youtube search and found this video as well, and right here is showing Assault 5 being cleared with no troubles at all as far as I can. Hardly the sky is falling complaint posted earlier, unless I'm mistaken.

Watching that video made me realize how tiny it is on the iPhone compared to an iPad. Its a big difference, everything is more visible. I might get an iPad to play this kind of games at home and finally be able to play Crabbiton too. I would be a win-win situation.

Down with the Canadian devil!!

That episode just hits so many right strings for me. The whole episode. And then the fight at the end to have some laughs. I watched other episodes and I recommend giving the episode called Gluten a view. Also hilarious.

The developers of Subway Surfers has released a new game only in Canada as a soft launch. Will give them the benefit of the doubt. Also looks great. Free-not really-mium.

Also released today but worldwide this time is a new Doodle Jump game featuring Batman. The interesting new feature are boss battles against Batman typical foes. Free-not really-mium.

Well, this article sold me on Cosmic Crown. Actually I had been on the fence, because I couldn't find any impressions.
http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPad/Cosmic+Crown/news.asp?c=62434
While playing Cosmic Crown I realise that it reminds me of superb roguelike Hoplite.

The two games are quite different, but they share a number of elements - they're both games of observation and tactics, for instance.

...it's worth a look if you're into turn-based challenges and accessible roguelikes take an idea and do it well
"Hoplite" is like the Pavlov's bell of IOS gaming for me. Instantly gets me interested and intrigued if a game is reminiscent of Hoplite

Can't check because I already own the game but apparently Valiant Hearts is free (or it's going to be free very soon, at least the first episode).

It's a fantastic story, don't miss it.

It's also getting an update today with a free interactive comic!

Ohhh...I was thinking of getting this on my Xbox One but to have it in the go? Why not. Sign me up.

Not free yet in the US though. IAPs are a little confusing but I'm assuming it's $8.99 to unlock the rest of the game?

EDIT:

Was planning on getting Device 6 tonight, but seeing as that's an interactive story with puzzles and this is too, maybe I should go with this and Year Walk (which I think is a little more "gamey").

I'll be getting both D6 and YW at some point regardless.

Are you sure it isn't just the new comic that is free for people who already own Valiant Hearts? That's all I've seen so far.

It would be fantastic if the first episode of the game was free as well... but all I'm seeing is news about the comics, Valiant Hearts Dogs of War.

played that star wars galatic defense, a great game hampered by its own free to play nature, I want to play it a lot but I wont give in to bad freemium pratices

Battle Worlds: Kronos is new to my list of "didn't know this game was coming out on ios?" games.

capturewqo8c.png

Unfortunately I can't buy it, since it is ipad 3+ only. But on PC it is GLORIOUS.
If anybody remembers Battle Isle...and you probably don't, it is kind of a more serious Advance Wars and Kronos is the spiritual successor to that.

Plenty of turn based combat, tough, almost unfair missions that will really test your strategic thinking. Fancy looking graphics, some laughable voice acting...Kronos has it all.

Assuming the port is in any way decent, it is at the top of my list to get if I ever upgrade.

Really? I've played through to the 10th level and not a scrap of an issue, the so-called energy timer that gives you 6 games, generally replenishes the token used to play a level at the same time I finish the level lol (or just 3 mins more). How far did you get? I'm enjoying it a bunch more than I expected, I really like seeing all the special units, just got past Greedo and Boba Fett is up in the next level I believe.

I also really like TD games with multiple difficulty levels per stage, and this having 5 (or is it 6) difficulty levels per stage is great. Novice has been a real cake walk, and the first few stages I got up through normal, and it has been fun too.

Also I really like how they do the profile and show you your rarest achievements (vs %s of the rest of the game's players), and the ~1,000 achievements to unlock for doing all sorts of things.

not too far but I have been grinding my 2 heroes (Darth Maul and Vader) Vader feels really, really weak compared to Maul, and while I havent found the game too challenging, the grind does show how easily you use up those energy cube things. I'm not a massive fan of the random loot after the levels and i've yet to get enough of those things needed to unlock more hero slots (the name escapes me)

You get the money for moving ahead in the game though, there's been no reason to grind levels. You can play the light side too, but it seems like the same levels with different heroes. I got Maul and someone else on the dark side, some guy with 2 light sabers. Skywalker on the light side is actually really good, it doesn't say it but his power that slows down enemies also does pretty good damage to them as well, so if you use it at the right times it can take down stronger enemies.

It really helps to move your hero along to clear mobs or tie up bigger units giving them a constant workout. Like I said, I'm on level 10 and haven't grinded at all (don't use any consumables), and I just hit 10k currency, enough to buy a 2nd hero, but there's no reason to, as you can only use 1 hero until you clear level 12. And maybe you get a free one for that who knows (I got a free dark side hero, so if I clear level 12 on the light side, i'll just play the dark side if no 2nd hero is given).

I haven't decided if I'll just save for 30k and get a premium hero, or go for 3 light side heroes (buy 2x of the cheaper 10k ones) and 3 dark side heroes (buy 1x 10k one), so I have both sides able to run the max of three heroes, then go for the premium 30k heroes. It depends on how high the rewards scale up in the later levels which I haven't hit... which is another reason to not grind on early levels.

Not only are the later levels more profitable (at least you're awarded money for clearing each one with 3 stars, and the money increases every level further), they're more interesting to play and take longer, so you don't deplete energy as fast. So I'd actually recommend not grinding XP on early levels, there's been no need at all so far for me, and also the heroes have a level cap of 15, which I expect you'd hit fairly fast (Luke is already closing in on reaching level 10 of 15 and I'm only on map 10 of 12 in just the first of the five or six worlds, and that's just from playing novice - haven't started the other 5 difficulties).

Hmmmm I'm pretty sure people saying they have already fully completed Sailor's Dream are wrong.
As much as people saying there are no puzzles.

I'm convinced it's impossible to see everything in one day.

So planning to dive into Year Walk tonight. The start of my Simogo journey (well, technically, I also had Kosmo Spin).

As a more non-abstract Simogo experience, thought I may get Beat Sneak Bandit as well. Wish it was optimized for iPhone 5/5S, but always wanted to give it a go.

Two cool releases today for the arcade action fans. Haven't played TwistiX, but Slider is really cool. Arcade-y, fast, but also kind of strategic. Gets hectic as more enemies clutter the grid.

Slider - Free, $2.99
Trailer
Three seconds until the shell blows your hull. Six enemies on the Grid, some protected by shields, one charged with energy and about to blow up.

Two seconds. An item that increases the score multiplier appears. If the Pulse reaches the charged enemy the chain reaction will clear the grid, but you won't survive this time. Quick, think!

One second. You set your path, a bit convoluted, but it will do, and your ship leaps forward, just a few milliseconds away from death. It slides through the Grid, through your enemies, through the powerup. Your score increases and you break your record.

More entities appear, one shoots a homing missile. Three seconds until it blows your hull...

screen520x924.jpeg

"Oh, no, boobs! Can't have the kids see that", said Apple, as they demanded that the NSFW mind-scarring image by removed from Icewind Dale

That's also what ratings are for. Not sure what this would have been rated but it's far too difficult of a game for kids to begin with.

Am I the only one playing Gems of War?

Almost 20 hours later I find it FANTASTIC...even better than the original PQ (or on par, it's been a while).
I thought I would have never said this about a freemium game (despite the initial appearance, game screams premium...I do not know how they will monetize it).

Great design and dead perfect fights, with a ton of things to keep in check.
And the usual PQ fun.

I hope they will maintain this balance in the worldwide release (maybe there is a spike at level 10-11, but it's doable).

I can't help but blame Apple and the rise of mobile F2P

Well, to be fair, I like to think that in the end, many years into the future, when Apple doesn't exist anymore, IAP will be their legacy instead of being remembered as a leading technology corporation, IAP is what they will be remembered for. History will tell it like this: "And then a company called Apple invented InAppPurchases, ruining gaming and many other forms of entertainment because they targeted a human weakness, otherwise known as people with inner demons, to a horrible payment system that basically...(you know the rest)" xD So their legacy is pretty much f*** up for the future generations xD Good job xD

I loved the game, but don't be put off by some of the puzzles...it can be tough to progress at some points.

Do yourself a favor and download the companion app once you've played a bit. Gives some interesting context.

Beat Sneak is great. Definitely my favorite Simogo game in terms of pure gameplay. Charming and challenging.

I played on an iPhone 5, and I think with all the device turning and flipping you need to do, a smaller device and screen works better.

You could be right! I tried playing it again last night in bed while my GF was sleeping and felt pretty indiscreet spinning the ipad mini!

I looked up the solution for the first puzzle of Device 6 and I'm not sure I want to continue. Is this pretty typical of the type of puzzle?

Yes, yes, yes!!! It's finally coming! One Finger Death Punch is coming to mobile "soon"!
Here's a trailer
I'd say One Finger Death Punch is quite easily one of the most addictive games I've ever played, and I can't wait for the mobile version. So excited and happy for this.

Pretty much. Personally I found it really engaging and compelling compared to the usually more logic-based puzzle games I play, but I could see how it might not appeal to everyone

I bought lando on the light side. I kinda worried though, since I couldnt get him past level 15 without buying another Premium pack where MAYBE I could had another lando to upgrade him more.

Is kinda funny, but this is the kinda game where I will lake a "upgrade your hero paying gems" instead of having to play the lottery with the packs
