Halo 5 beta preview [Game revolution] [Update: Big Screens]

Yeah, but a) normal human height has probably adjusted upwards a bit over the 550 years between now and the Fall of Reach, and b) the IVs are going to be big on average anyway, since they're selected for (among other things) athleticism.

Also, didn't Blur actually say that they deliberately exaggerated his height in that last scene? They'd know.

See above. I know the IIs are all crazy tall, but it's like 6-10 inches taller than the IVs, not a foot and a half :p

Whether or not it was deliberate it matches what is know in canon.

Good fucking God, youd think you people would learn after that first thread that judging a game based on random impressions and incomplete information is a really dumb enterprise.

Maybe wait till you play it?

this is a beta
one year out from the final release
using early assets
and probably placeholder assets

this thread is hurting my brain

Umm.. Not talking about the screenshots, but the shiny renders of armor suits. Which I presume is indicative of armor designs in the actual game.

Which looks ugly and aside from the fact that its in a Halo game, I wouldn't be able to tell you it was Halo armor.

I believe Frankie has said the final Halo armors won't be "shiny," aka might be a little more battle-worn, etc. Don't quote me on it though.

The designs being ugly or the texture?

That looks like Halo 4.5, but at the same time.. those textures. What happened? The renders we got a while back looked amazing (reflecting visors would be back, loved that in Halo 3)

Armor looks the same as Halo 4's (textures look fucked up..?) and what happened to the eye popping blue and red from the renders? This is exactly like the Halo 4 team colors.

I don't think it takes nitpicking to see that this game isn't very visually impressive. But it is important to remember that there is almost a year left in terms of development time and they are aiming for 60fps. So it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up looking much much better before release.

Perspective folks.

It's a year away...

People have to understand that the game cannot possibly look incredible due to the 60 fps requirement (although personally, I wouldn't have minded 30fps). I am skeptical that the graphical leaps from H5 to H7+ later on for Xbox One will be substantial unless they decide to half their framerate.

Keep expectations real and grounded.

Well, it actually is Halo 4 armor (other than the hands), so there's that.

The designs themselves. Like what is that blue dude beside Chief? I doubt the actual game will be that shiny, it'll probably be a little more grounded e.g. Spartans that have fought in battle.

Reach had the best designs in the series. The armor and helmets actually felt like they belonged in the Halo universe, not something out of an anime or mecha show.

Maybe because the game is a year away? And because 343i are doing a proper Beta not a glorified demo?

i realize that but still, it just looks very bland for a next gen game. i wasnt expecting anything crazy for an early beta but the visuals just seem very similar to halo 5, if not identical.

60fps will come at a cost regardless.

Don't expect those shiny Blue and Red models in MP a page or two back.

Did Halo 3 or any other Halos improve visually from the beta to the release?

Different development team, so you can't really compare.

Well, it is a multiplayer game. I imagine the campaign will look better. Not only that I'm sure they're using placeholders/assets from Halo 4 currently.

I know it's beta, but those official screen shots look lackluster. It's just an arena with crates and boxes set up with the earth backdrop. Not really hype inducing.

I'm trying to reign in my hype for this as a huge Halo fan. I do not want to be disappointed so try not to be so defensive.

But no I have not.

Dat 60fps tho... sacrifices will be made, even if they are small.

This is 343. Did you see the ridiculous shit they pulled off on the 360?

They may not be masters of Halo gameplay, but holy hell can they make an incredibly gorgeous game.

Don't count it out. The older leaks (and IGN material) aren't consistent with the armor we saw from this recent leak. Some images leaked yesterday show far more armor detail.

Yeah, 4 still looks amazing.

Ah I was not aware of this, I'll be a little more positive now. Destiny has critically damaged me.

lol.

Tons of sacrifices were made for Halo 4 graphics.

The Skybox's were terrible, frame rate was the worst out of 360 Halo titles, and other sacrifices were made.

The lead architect for the Halo 4 engine left as well, Corrinne Yu.

But honestly, these graphics look great to me. Super clean, AA, good sight lines, flat surfaces, etc. For a game like Halo that's all you need IMO.

its because its 60 fps and 1080p(?) ...and on xbox one

I'd be surprised if it looked much better than Halo 4

Yes, exactly. Halo 4 was a really nice looking game for the hardware, and if 343 are really going to manage 1080p 60fps I think it's fair to assume that the visuals will not be amazingly detailed.

This brings up a good point. They did pull something amazing in MP, but 343 made plenty of sacrifices (namely scale) in single-player to achieve what they did.

Personally, I want clean IQ and consistent framerate above all else (if Halo 5 is good anyways).

Wow there are some pretty high freaking standards in this thread because I personally think the game looks amazing.

Isn't that basically what people do all the time with every game that is released?

This game is colorful, therefore it is the last bastion of originality in a world of gaming devoid of color.

Or when people used to approach WWII shooters, and post impressions about how they are tired of this concept.

The same could be said of the new Assassin's Creed game. All we really had to go on were random impressions and leaked screens, but it gave us a basic idea of what to expect from the game. People came up with their own impressions of the game.

What else can you really do, but react to what is in front of you? I guess it's probably best not to make sweeping comments about how the game will end up, but people have a right to do that. It happens all the times, both positively and negatively.

Publishers put out these screens and give access to publications to preview their game to generate positive buzz for their game. Publishers do their best to cultivate a preview environment that is less critical. It's an environment that best accomplishes their goal of obtaining early pre-orders and fueling the direct promotional campaign.

Corrine was 1 of 6 Graphics Engineers with Thomas J Holmes being the lead.
