Assassin’s Creed: Unity Framerate Is “Atrocious”

Gen8 is really a continuation the Gen7 trend of releasing unfinished games with the knowledge that significant patches within a week of release will (probably) fix them.

Consumers seem fine with it.

if there is a day one patch i dont care... who cares if they have it done before release or ON release day. As long as the game is running as intended on day One its ok.

but if it runs bad on release they and they need like a month to fix it, thats NOT fine with me.

Driveclub should have never been released for example.

The hundreds of unimmersive NPCs seem to have added nothing to the game except pop-in and slowdown... I'd have preferred if they just used the last gen engine and given a more stable performance ala BF honestly.

Does anyone remember that Hitman Absolution (and Blood Money years ago) managed to do the same thing without all the hype AND poor performance

Nobody seemed to ever complain about shitty FPS

Oh right.. that's because there wasn't any

We are aware that the graphics performance of Assassin’s Creed Unity on PC may be adversely affected by certain AMD CPU and GPU configurations. This should not affect the vast majority of PC players, but rest assured that AMD and Ubisoft are continuing to work together closely to resolve the issue, and will provide more information as soon as it is available. - Ubisoft

It's funny how this gen Ubisoft is quickly becoming the textbook example for everything that is wrong about AAA development.

It's amazing seeing EA give Bioware free reign to go balls out with DA:I in comparison to the convetor belt 1000 man team Ubi uses these days.

I bet it was like:

Programmer: mon Cherie poo poo, we need to make zees game 100% pc eckslusive to realize zee vision for parii

Executive: SCREW YOU programmer I want MONEY MONEY MONEY

Programmer: but zee graphics

Level designer: I will just design a new level to fix this *turns crank and factory line restarts*

Now we know why the French have British accents in the game.

Jeez ubisoft what have you done!

Don't worry guys, Rainbow Six will be good. And 60 FPS! They can't possibly mess this one up, it's closed quarters combat. No siree Bob.

Please be good please be good please be good

It's Shunpo. It's a feature.
I'm praying to the gaming gods that you are right.

Well it is release day though isn't it? It doesn't sound like that day one patch is doing much to help either and people have already been playing on that patch for a couple days.

How about trying to parry/dodge (prison fight at the start) with 20FPS and huge controllers latency inconsistency? Not hindering at all? Lol.

This isn't Dance Dance Revolution. There's a large window to almost queue your attacks, the combat in this series doesn't really feel as instant as say Batman or Mordor.

The framerate being mostly 25-30fps hasn't thus far been a hindrance to playing properly

As empathetic as I am with those upset when tech issues raise their ugly heads, your story doesn't really suggest your outlook on gaming actually improved...

As disappointing as a game with frame drops, tearing, aliasing and so forth is, it seems to me that many times these blemishes don't really impact the playability of the titles. Yes, there is technically always going to be a hit to the interactivity and gamer response time, but really, this is Assassins Creed, not Virtua Fighter.

Sorry but this has to stop or developers will do whatever they want (not like they dont do that already).

It's like make a movie and release it on video tape, yeah the story is the same if you watch it on Blu-ray or video tape but it's the fucking 2014, why should i limit myself?

It's interesting that NPCs can apparently walk through objects, because I just had a cut scene where an NPC was attempting to walk through the character talking and couldn't do it. It was just the character talking for a minute with a big lady's face right up in the camera.

This is why it ticks me off how people are so nonchalant about framerate.

60 should be the standard (to strive for, anyway) and locked 30 should be the minimum.

Otherwise you have companies that are willing to put out games with terrible performance.

Games developed by hundreds of people, no less...

The scale of a game world means absolute shit if you're constantly taken out of the experience by bad performance, pop-in, and whatever other problems that arise. It's unacceptable.

yes. Here i would also say they shouldnt release it until it is fine. Ubisoft doesnt care i think. A friend pre ordered it. If i tell him what he is about to see and play he wont care. He wants Assassins creed like million others and Ubisoft knows it. Sad.

I was planning to buy AC: Unity aswell but now i will wait. The new Lego Batman was going to get my main attention anyways^^

You're the only one expecting 60fps from this game. All people want is a locked 30fps, and it appears they can't even consistently deliver that on PC.

You're letting your anger with the situation affect your ability to properly read my post.

Go back and re-read. Then adjust your reply in an edit accordingly.

I feel like a dirty hypocrite because I'm enjoying CoD:AW but Ubisoft have quickly become my least favourite dev/pub and just seem to churn out homogeneous, unoptimised, collect-a-thon trite. Well, apart from the Ubi-Art titles.

I'll be giving this one a miss.

Seems like the 900p parity thing across Xbone and PS4 was a PR thing to hide this then.

I don't think it was hiding anything, just more the fact the game isn't ready for launch yet. It's clearly being forced out the door early, and the team haven't had the time they needed to properly optimise it yet - hence both sat at 900.

I've heard from a couple of friends that the game actually has a great story / good graphics. However, the framerate is kind of a deal breaker. I can't justify spending $60 on a game that's at least not decently optimized. Hopefully they patch it soon.

You shouldn't. That's the beauty of it.

Some of us aren't apologizing for the mediocre performance. Instead, we are simply pointing out that the game remains playable (as in the gameplay isn't as detrimentally impacted by the technical flaws as the thread may lead you to believe).

So you as a gamer are at a cross road. You can buy the game and feel confident that you won't miss a parry or block or jump. It still plays about as well as the previous entries on consoles.

Or

Vote with your wallet, draw a line in the sand and tell the publisher they've crossed the threshold for unacceptable performance regardless of everything else.

In any event I ask that you don't villify your fellow GAFer for picking any side.

As I said the other day in response to someone else, many of the best games I've ever played have had framerates that either dipped lower than 30fps, or didn't even try to reach 30fps.

So I honestly find it really difficult to draw a line in the sand and claim that now, after 20 years as a gamer, it's unacceptable, a travesty, lock Ubisoft up and throw away the key. And I also know for a fact, after 20 years as a gamer, that they're not 'unplayable' framerates or some other silly hyperbole (or, rather, that whether it's unplayable depends entirely on what kind of game it is).

like I said in the other thread, just wait for the in-depth analysis of DF or wherever. Shit is horrible. That some people are willing to buy anyway just makes it harder for us to tell devs just how fucking unacceptable this shit is. God, 60fps whatever at this point. Lock your damn games at a stable 30fps you incompetent devs

The build at the launch event was also bad. Was running 20~fps most of the time. It was an early build, but it was still really bad.

I agree. The strange thing is as a long time fan of AC I still feel an urge to buy it. I know I won't enjoy it as much as I could if it's littered with technical issues and they will bug the crap out of me as any bug that's not hilarious generally does. I probably won't actually buy it at launch in the UK but the urge is still there in a small way even though the performance sounds like a dealbreaker. Seems I'm almost part of the problem.

This right here is the reason games are released in this shit state. Instead of wallet voting people support this ugly practice even if they are aware of issues before the launch. Guess who deserves to suffer now?

I'd say just wait to see if a patch is released down the line to fix the performance. In the mean time the game will get cheaper and cheaper. You might even be able to pick it up used for $20-25 by the time the patch comes out.

And if the patch doesn't come out then maybe the urge to buy it will go away.

I'd argue they probably just don't care or don't even realise most of that.

People have been playing AAA games with sub-par framerates for decades now. Just because we have Digital Foundry doesn't mean that the masses suddenly give a shit.

Perfect Dark, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox (SNES), GTA San Andreas, Killzone...all much worse than the average game nowadays.

me to i think^^ i want to play it. AC : Rouge aswell but i will wait. I hope they can fix most of the problems until then. I loved AC: Black Flag.

wow...now that's just piss poor. after a 1 GB patch, it's still performing like this? Ubisoft needs to make a statement!

Yeah I want to hear them address this also. From what I've read and heard the framerate was even worse before the patch. But most if not all the footage you are seeing on this thread have the patch applied.

They don't deserve anything. They aren't suffering either.

The majority of people still buy it because the majority threshold for what's deemed "unacceptable" has yet to be crossed.

Until then, we will continue to get games from Ubisoft performing at least as bad as this.

This isn't a new phenomena
