This looks so gooood. And I'm not even worried about gyro aiming. Nintendoland proved it can be done well.

You can switch between gyro and analog. In my experience at Gamescom it works perfectly when combined, analog for big and/or fast turns and gyro for precision. It works specifically well with this as you shoot paint, it really helps the immersion.
Sounds like Killzone Mercenary, which was perfect.

Yeah, when you use gyro aiming, it is exactly like standard right stick aiming, but if you're just holding the controller normally you'll notice your aim wavering slightly due to the gyro sensing small hand movements. You tighten your grip on it and start moving it purposefully, and you get some really fine aiming control, and it feels really good.

It was easy to master the Epona shooting course and slingshot gallery in OoT 3D because of it.

I'll be honest, the gyro stuff is the only thing about this game that has given me pause. I have literally never once in my entire gaming career enjoyed gyro aiming or anything like that and found it almost always inferior to alternative methods of control. Here's hoping they nail it this time...

...because this is one of my most anticipated games. I love everything else I see about it.

Edit: GYRO AIM IS OPTIONAL? HURRAY! *does a jig*

I would think you would have to be the one to nail it :p

I hope Wii remote/nunchuck is supported as an option. The only downside I could see is losing the quick screen access to jump to various places, etc.

But fix that by having a minimap that shows the level, and then holding a button enlarges it so that you can point with the remote at where you want to jump to.

This probably takes slightly longer than using the screen for this, but to me it's worth the tradeoff of not having to use gyro controls. (Admittedly I haven't tried it, but I can't imagine rotating/orienting the gamepad with both hands is as comfortable as just tiny wrist movements with one hand for pointer aiming.)

Can't wait for analog users to call gyro users cheaters when they get their asses handed to them.

Don't worry, we'll slaughter you on our way to the ink bank and laugh as you wonder aloud how you could be beat by your analog brethren.

Thank goodness it's optional. Nintendo yous my bros :D

Game looks really fun. If Zelda wasn't coming out next year, this would be my most hyped game for 2015.

I kinda like gyro, but yeah. I'm still really glad it's optional, and can be combined with analog. Best option will always be analog for looking around (large scale) with gyro for fine tuning. But either way, it's never fun when control gimmicks are forced on you. I end up disappointed every time a 3DS or Vita game makes me touch the screen when I could easily use buttons.

Do you know how the Gamepad is locked with a heavy cable for the demo station? You don't feel it when you play Splatoon with gyro, that's how easy and swift it is done. Just from the wrist.

I hope there is a Conquest Mode like in Smash and since the idea of the game is fighting for territory, instead of the pie chart they could use an alternate world map.
It would be cool too if you could create and customize your own clan with color, name and emblem, you'll be able to be part of more than one but won't be able to fight against your other teams.

Understood. But it's still more "work" than one hand with the Wii remote. If you're implying I have to stand up and flail my arm around to use the Wii remote like in that picture, that's obviously off base.

I sit very comfortably with my forearm resting on my thigh, and it takes almost no effort. It's 95% (or higher) as comfortable as my posture while using dual analog.

It's the exact same thing, though. Imagine it like a super-wide Wiimote.

Let's not make this thread about gyro/ motion controls.

I hope that there are a lot of customization options for the inklings. When the game comes out I really want to be able to personalize my inkling.

Gyro aim is optional.

But try it, it's really great. Or get your ass kicked.

Or better: Pure analog is optional. Gyro + analog is the standard. You also need the quicklaunch map so the gamepad will probably mandatory on a competetive level online.

You probably confuse it with something like faceraiders.. The Gyro is used for small adjustments, you will move around via analog, the gyro ist just there to replace the necessity for stuff like autoaim.
Watch the Treehouse E3 videos on it. It looks awesome.
(Or visit Nintenoland / The panorama & streetview apps to experience the gamepads awesome 9 axis precision.)

The Uncharted game on Vita did this and it worked surprisingly well. I've always wanted to try more games that used analog+gyro

One thing that I'm loving about this game are the clothes. Just look at this girl! So stylish.

One of the few games where I hope it gets continual updates with new costumes and other customization options.

Would be amazing if they can keep it up for a year or more after with like a halloween stage or other holiday one.

Who do I talk to about getting some Hideki Naganuma music in this game? Do they have a forum or a community management thing yet?

Games with good gyro aim:
Ocarina of Time 3D
RE: Revelations (3DS version only)
Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition (used for some of the gadgets)
The Wind Waker HD
Metroid Blast, Zelda: Battle Quest in Nintendo Land
ZombiU (for sniper rifle and scanner)
Zero 5 (Fatal Frame) (for the camera obscura)
Captain Toad (minecart levels with shooting)
Skyward Sword (bow/slingshot aiming)

It looks like they didn't listen to anyone at E3. Everyone hated it.

You should consider actually reading things. Pay attention. An option for stick controls was confirmed at E3. They didn't listen because they've already done it. So double facepalm right back atcha!

I'm seeing black and white inklings with different style clothes.

Is there customization for your character (skin color, hair, clothes) or is that randomized when playing?

EXTENSIVE character customization was confirmed at E3. We also talked a lot about it here and the other thread already.

SS trolls all the time. Let it be.

Oh god, checked post history. One for the list then! :)

Just to jump in on the controls thing, I played Splatoon a bunch at EGX, and coming from being a mouse+keyboard PC gamer, whilst it felt like it was taking a bit of getting used to to use the gyro+analogue stick default combo, when I switched to just analogue sticks, I immediately started doing even worse than before. So guess I was subconsciously getting used to it quicker than I thought.

Will be interesting to play it with pro controller. The gamepad is superuseful for teleporting back to the action, but can always set the thing up on a stand and use your toes

Some of it might come down to level design. The level at EGX was very two dimensional - not much up and down, so most of the movement required of me was subtle wrist stuff, rather than big motions, which tend to be done with the arms.

What are you talking about?

Everyone seemed to like it or atleast willing to use it.

No, the people that played after me complained about it, the guys I played with complained about it, I complained about it. The Nintendo booth dude says "we've heard this feedback from everyone and the devs know about it."

People hated it. It literally makes it an ultra clunky TPS.

It's almost like...you didn't read the thread at all?

It shouldn't even be available at all, and knowing Nintendo, they're pretty stubborn when it comes to game design.

Wow you'd have to become a pro toe gamer to do that.

The hell is wrong with you lol. If you want inferior controls they are in there. They, in fact, were already in the E3 demo. Tap a button, done.

They need to add Wii remote controls. IR aiming is better than gyro and the split controller setup is far more comfortable than the bulky gamepad. Wiimote & Nunchuk controls would be simple to implement:

Z - Squid (dive into ink, restores ink)
Nunchuk joystick - move

C - Bomb (uses 70% of your ink)
B - Ink Shot (uses up ink)
D-pad left/right - looks left/right
A - Jump
D-pad down - Camera Reset

Press or hold minus to overlay map, point at the Squid Icon to make a big jump to one of your team mates.

Use pointer to aim

The trailer already STRONGLY hinted at Wiimote controls.

There has to be a hint of irony

In calling a company stubborn for not removing something you don't like, right?
