Far Cry 4 Reviews Thread

Man, I wish this wasn't dropping so close to GTA 5. There's no way I can resist it after I fucking loved FC3.

That's exactly why I can get excited about this.

Yeah, I know, people love that game. Must admit I never actually got very far into the story. Think I wore myself trying to clear the map of everything and basically just ended up clearing the top quarter. I still intend to try again at some point.

Probably it's a game you should just treat like a total sandbox and forget about being all OCD about it.

I found with Ubi games I need to just hammer out the main story before I burn myself out doing everything else.

Worked well for me in Watch Dogs and Black Flag. Finished the story in BF first and now I just hop in every once in a while to sail around and clear some more of the map.

Judging from the reviews, it encompasses the same retreading design that would've made "other" similar games to drop down their score - the only difference is that Ubisoft bloated this with quantity, and with great reward at that.

Ugh...

The difference between Far Cry 4 and other Ubisoft Open World games is that while every action you take feeds into a seemingly never-ending cycle of rewards, as it does in Assassin's Creed, The Crew, Watch Dogs, etc, here it actually makes a difference to what you're doing moment-to-moment.

You're not just hunting feathers for the sake of it boosting an arbitrary number. Instead, actions are rewarded with a constant slew of upgrades that then enable you to be a more efficient murderer, which of course nets you more upgrades. A new Karma meter joins returning XP-based skill unlocks (now, thankfully, shorn of Magical Negro tattooing), where killing dudes cooly gives points to spend buffing offensive and defensive qualities, and complements the hunting-and-pruning of local flora and fauna that offers better ammo storage and chemical boosts.
Actually this is exactly what Watch_Dogs and AC:Unity do. It's another implementation of their mostly unnecessary but why not XP system.

Then again, VideoGamer gave Unity and this game the same scores.

That's my nifty excuse to wait out on Far Cry 4.

I couldn't get into 3, but damn the Himalayan atmosphere is perfect (UC2 got me hooked on that).

I think I have an explanation. It's probably that Far Cry 4, being FP, controls way way better, so subconsciously all these critics who are over-sighting areas they would've scored down other games, is because those other games are 3rd person and don't control as smoothly, and you can't manouvre as freely.

And also thematically the Himalayas is far more interesting that Revolutionary Paris or modern Chicago.

That's ]exactly it. All of my favourite parts of FC3 happened when I dropped the story and just stalked off around the jungle making my own amusement.

Interesting technique, thought with FC3 I found some of the best battles to be against outposts early'ish in the game before I was equipped with badass weapons and a ton of ammo. Don't think I would have experimented as much with fire and stealth if I was just attaching outposts with a belt fed machine gun and rpg.... which would be hard not to use, if I had them.

Different strokes. Still haven't played Black Flag, but in the Unity thread(s) it seemed highly recommended. Might pick it up this holiday.

Ugh...

Two years after the release of the last game in the series you don't want a sequel that does less to change the formula than the DLC expansion did. It's understandable.

agreed the story in FC3 was laughable right from the get-go... I don't even remember most of it, just rescue your friends or some crap...

the open world concepts in the game were well done... I even felt bad for skinning some animals, great atmosphere.

Am I the only one suspicious that Ubi offered an early embargo release for outlets above a certain score? Some of the important outlets are missing reviews.

So will this incite debates and stuff?

Good scores. Despite not liking fps's's's's much I did quite enjoy the campaign in FC3. Might pick this up in a dry month

Hmm, that's also a good way to approach it. I tend to get frustrated with games when they're too difficult so I think my style of play has always favoured being more powerful. But you raise a good point.

Yup, this is the best way to enjoy Far Cry games. The problem is when you're finally trying to play through the main story and the game's mechanics/systems get in your way (all knowing, all seeing AI, etc).

any word on how XB1 version compared to PS4 version? trying to decide which one to buy.
Considering the vast majority of reviews are from the PS4 version, i think it's would be the safe bet. It's previously been indicated that the PS4 version runs at 1080p/30... while there is yet to be a confirmed resolution for the Xbox One version (to the best of my knowledge).

One thing I remember really liking about FC3 was that when you finished a mission, the objective would say something along the lines of "EXPLORE, or go to the next mission". I loved that the first thing it said was to explore, and I spent most of my time doing just that.

Sigh, and here I was hoping reviewers are actually getting their priorities checked with the recent blasting of AAA releases recently.

That middle tweet is the concerning one for me. I don't care for Ubisoft's particular brand of "filler-philia" so I will probably not be too into this.

I think the hybrid (FC2 + FC3) approached to outposts being reclaimed by the enemy is going to give the sandbox gameplay at lot more legs. The outpost reset in FC3 was a nice add, but during the campaign the world ended up feeling very sterile once you'd cleared large areas of the map.

I played Far Cry 1, Far Cry 2, but ended up skipping FC3. This is a no brainer it looks like.

I think you should play FC3. Fantastic game and even some reviewers prefer it over FC4.

FYI, play the PC version of FC3 if you can. Console versions are shit.

Yeah same. So tired of the typical Ubisoft open mini map with a million markers, collect 150 posters/feathers/treasure chests, loot every body, empty open world games.

IGN preliminary review summary

See, that sounds fantastic to me. Variety and great open-world gameplay.

I feel bad for people who care so much about story in video games, especially one like Far Cry. Seems like it'd just be an endless chain of disappointments.

Just ordered a MSI GTX 970 and get to choose between AC: Unity, Far Cry 4 and The Crew as a free game. Hmm....which shall I choose? :p

The tone of his review in progress reads more like a 7 or so to me.

Also, ugh, how is it even possible that Far Cry 4's story is even worse than Far Cry 3? That's a depressing accomplishment in and of itself.

I just want a fun world to play in and it looks like it delivers that in spades.

Do you fellow gaffers think its worth it getting the Kyrat edition?

Going back an forth on whether to get it or not.

I knew that this game would be probably be an expansion to 3 gameplay, which doesn't bother me, but now I'm hearing that the story might be worse. I didn't think that was even possible.
