iOS Gaming November 2014: GLORIOUS!™

Anyone know a good Super meat boy-like game that isn't a shallow endless runner?

League of Evil (1 mind you, not 2 or 3) is a fine suggestion.

Rayman Jungle Run is a hybrid, but it isn't an endless runner (level based) and it is brilliant so make sure to check that out and to a lesser extent the sequel.

Whale Trail by ustwo is completely broken on iOS 8. The sounds are completely gone. Like in Super Crate Box or Rayman Fiesta Run. Completely awesome and now completely broken games. Damn iOS 8. I was enjoying them... and so far no response from either developer (haven't reached Ubisoft yet)... this sucks...

I prefer a healthy mix of both. The big budget AAA games can be just as enjoyable as IOS games

Thats me. I have the PS4 for that reason. A lot of iOS and a few PS4 games in between.

So sad. I wish I could do the opposite.

If you think is sad for people to join iOS as their main gaming platform... what are you doing on an iOS thread then?

Wow, that's interesting, my story is the total opposite. I've always been a gamer, but for the past year or so my I've barely touched my 360 and been almost solely iOS. Prior to that I'd been into pretty even amounts of both, but iOS completely stole the spotlight from any handhelds for a solid 3-4 years. Then, in August, I bought a 3DS (XL) and I practically stopped iOS gaming, spending a ton of time with my 3DS and its physical controls and awesome eShop. I got completely rebooked and wished I had bought a 3DS earlier as it turned out that I really did miss playing on handhelds. It even pushed me enough to purchase a Wii U, both of which I love because they're getting so many good indies and virtual console games.

So at this point I've found a middle ground, as I'm easing back into iOS a little.

I been told that the 3DS has some really good gems in it... and NO IAP. Enjoy Bayonetta 2, lucky you...

The first one is probably the best auto runner on the AppStore (Badland is a flap-runner). Is really brilliant. The second one doesn't work on iOS 8 or the iPhone 6.

I loved the form factor of the mini I won in a contest. It felt the perfect size for gaming.

But the way they completely gimped the new mini made me get an Air 2 as my next upgrade. Just think if they used the same innards as the Air 2 in the mini 3 :(

Yeah, I get you there. I got the Mini 2 precisely because of that (well, it was what I could afford at the time). But why would anyone pay more for a Mini 3? It's exactly the same as a 2 except without touch ID.

If you can afford it an Air 2 is the more "future proof". But the Mini 2 is still snappy as hell and plays better than my 5S did. Heck, I also have a Shield Tablet and while it may be able to handle PC/console level games, the Mini 2 is faster for everyday use and is now my main tablet (that may change as the Shield is getting Lollipop today and I have a suspicion that it was really built around it).

I don't think the Mini 2 will go out of date as quickly as other iOS devices have.

Would be soooo nice.

For that reason I'm saving $100 and getting the 32gb mini 2 instead.

Honestly this is the absolute stupidest move Apple has ever pulled. Literally $100 damn dollars extra just for f*ckin Touch ID. Who ever buys the mini 3 has some serious issues.

Good call. They should have named the Mini 3, the Mini 2.1. Just asinine.

Mini 4 + Metal
That's what I'm waiting for

Mini 2 does support Metal and haven't found a single game yet that doesn't run fantastic in it (Vainglory, Asphalt 8 with the new 24 car Metal exclusive races, etc.).

Of course, the Mini 4 whenever it hits will surely kill it. Knowing Apple, they'll release a faster Air 3 and a Mini 4 with the innards of an Air 2.:(

But I'm more than happy with my Mini 2 for now.

Ah, didn't realize. Guess I need to get a Mini 2 as soon as possible

I am starting to realize that developers dont care at all about their oldest games on the AppStore at all. At all. So once they sell a lot and make a new game, they forget about their user fanbase for that game. It looks really bad. I dont know how they forget about them so quickly. Why should I bother supporting them when they dont care about us at all? Sell sell money money and the past is forgotten, abandoned. It is so hard to update a game? I already tangled with that and the answer is: NO. It is really easy. Even more for big budget companies This is giving me some thoughts lately.

Devil's advocate here, to me it seems like Apple has one of, if not the worst environment for this stuff. Even with windows you don't see multiple refreshes between hardware and OS a year (breaking compatibility). Simply put, iOS seems to have the most maintenance behind it required to protect future compatibility of any platform to date. Certainly a console release almost would never have to worry about updating their software every year to make sure new buyers wouldn't be locked out from their software due to some change in OS or new hardware.

Really Apple should place a bigger emphasis on ensuring new OS updates don't break so many old apps, maybe they need a legacy mode or something where the hardware can run apps emulating the older OS, so they still work. I just don't think requiring the developers to deal with yearly OS updates that break their software is the best way to go.

So true, so true. Every iOS update had big problems with compatibility... with iOS 8.1 a lot of apps lost sound effects. I wish they listen to you and I wish they also took an update to improve battery life and battery consumption. Also the heat the phone has when I talk too long. It overheats.

Also, in a shocking turn of events I Vlambeer answered my tweet. They will update Super Crate Box at some point. Is what I only wanted. An answer. THANK YOU.

Good point. If MS didn't put any effort into backwards compatibility, people would raise hell.

Still think devs, given the situation, should put some effort into fixes. Creates bad blood for future games they put out.

Not to go off-topic, but that's one of the aspects I love about the PC platform. I can play games from 10, 20 years ago, or the most recent releases, and not really have to worry about compatability. And if there is a issue, mods can usually provide a solution

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Just completed Framed. Really liked the game. It almost gave me a Ghost Trick kinda vibe. I was surprised to discover Zoe Quinn was involved in it.

Does android have the same problem? I never really hear if android games have to do the same.

With Lollipop running on Android Run Time (ART) instead of Dalvik, many devs have to patch their game to be compatible with the new runtime. As an owner of the Nexus 9, I am waiting for several games to receive a compatibility patch so I can play them once more.

This is a mobile platform problem in the whole. With the sheer scale and scope of hardware and software involved (well beyond just games or the specific nature and timeframe of a console) I'm not really sure it's something Apple, Google or MS are going to want to try and put on themselves.

Final Fantasy IV and the After Years are both 50% off right now in the US App Store. Both are the DS remake style versions.

I have the FFIV Complete Collection on my Vita, but still feel like picking these up. Any impressions of the DS version or how the port has fared on iOS?

IV DS is SOOOOO much better than the original (or its ports).

The After Years was not great, but I'm tempted on getting the remake to see if they fixed it.

iOS is moving too fast this month! :p

I hid the GC list in the OP now, reminds me of when the list was originally freely added to by anyone, oh the spam entries were GLORIOUS.

When This War of Mine finally comes to IOS, I really hope it's a huge success on mobile. There's nothing like it on the platform.

Never had a game make me feel like the bad guy before. It's so bleak and grim and atmospheric. It's not a "fun" game and it's not meant to be. It's tense and gripping and tedious. The art style is stunning: a gutted wartorn landscape, all pencil-sketched shadows and ruined structures, flashes of explosions outside.

Is it out on PC already?!

Looks like Apple may be having some kind of $.99 sale based on the wide variety of titles that should be $.99 at 11 EST:

Real Racing 2 HD
Pako
Osmos HD
Shadow Blade
Battle Supremacy
Rayman Jungle Run
Sprinkle Islands
Godfire
Might & Magic Clash of Heroes
Cover Orange HD
Prince of Persia: Shadow and Flame
Blueprint 3D HD
Sky Raiders: Cold War
Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders
Gangstar Vegas
Blek
Wild Blood
9mm
Deemo
Badland
Bio, Inc.
Duet Game
Dokuro
Doodle God

Seems too coincidental that all are going to $.99. A few of those are the iPad versions too. Maybe more will hit prior to 11. A pre-Black Friday sale perhaps? Of course, some of those are older, but more rare to see the iPad versions on sale.

Anything that stands out from those?

I already have Rayman from Starbucks.

Pako and Battle Supremacy (also just updated for Metal) are both outstanding IMO. Osmos is older but a classic. Real Racing 2 is probably the best sim racing game on iOS before it was bastardized in shameless F2P in RR3. Cover Orange, Prince of Persia, and Sprinkle Islands are all pretty good as well. Can't go too wrong with any of them -- although Might and Magic is probably better on iPad due to fairly finicky controls in picking lanes during battles.

Pako and Shadow Blade are worth far more than a $1. Shadow Blade is one of my favorite IOS platformers, and Pako is an excellent arcade game

I enjoyed Sprinkle Island and Prince of Persia as well

Add Sky Gamblers: Cold War and Gangstar Vegas to the $.99 sale. Hoping to see the iPad version of Dead Space sometime. Already have the iPhone version but 2x mode just isn't cool.

EDIT: List keeps growing! Just going to update my original post.

Thanks, I'll take a look at a few of these in the morning.

Well I finally got a few of my friends to play Swords & Poker Adventures and the little social aspects of it are neat. Obviously the biggest one is not paying for the gates, but the bonus cards and extra energy every day are pretty useful too. I wonder if I can keep enough of them playing until I get the "one hundred bonus cards" achievement. Probably not.

I'm in the second world now and trucking along nicely like a boss, although I am convinced that the CPU cheats HARD when a monster has a paralyze ability (and the shield that protects against that is suspiciously a premium "gems" item). I have already been witness to four instances of a monster getting three or more "three in row" hands in a row on me.

Anyway, my main goal right now is to at least get to the second tower before the event ends. Actually, I'll probably get there tomorrow if I can sneak enough round in at work, and the event still has twelve days or so. And I still have a few gold prizes to grind out in the first tower.

I played through Framed and really enjoyed it but I've got a question about the ending.

So is that final screen with the two horizontal panels the final screen? It gave me the option to move them, and when I did, it just started the game over. Just making sure I didn't miss anything.

You didn't start the game over, keep playing.

That's the dev told me when I asked

Added a few more titles to the $.99 sale post.

From that list I recommend buying without even thinking: Duet Game, BADLAND and Rayman Fiesta Run. Three of the very best AppStore games there are. Sort of my favorites for each genre they represent.

Might and Magic Clash of Heroes is a fantastic game that plays wonderfully on touch screen, and it has even a very cool async multiplayer component (I still play the game nowadays, mostly on iPhone, while the I completed the campaign long ago mostly on iPad).

It's not multiplayer only, is it?
I'm on the verge of getting it, but haven't seen much of it. Only heard that it's good.
